I first heard about Billy Bragg when I was just getting into punk rock. Someone played me the song "A New England," and I thought it was really catchy, but dismissed him for the most part (this was in the early `90s). Skip forward about 7-8 years and I find myself moving from New York City to Baltimore, MD. I was moving because I was in the process of getting a divorce, and on my trip moving all of my stuff out of our apartment into my apartment 3 states away, I found myself listening to Billy Bragg's Back to Basics CD. I'd had it for awhile, but never felt any connection to it until this trip. From that point on (August 2001) I found myself desperately trying to find more of Bragg's material. Years later the search has long been complete (I believe I have every CD he has ever recorded as well as a couple bootlegs), I hear about him coming to the U.S. and I get terribly excited.

thats funny i thought billy bragg was dead Sobule had another minor hit with her song Supermodel from the Clueless soundtrack. Glenn's Army covered it on their Major Threat EP in 2001. This show was quite stellar, Jill Sobule farted out loud two songs into her set, that was beyond amusing... Yeah, you know me but only on the phone. "Jill Sobule's hit was "I Kissed A Girl." This reviewer is an awesome dude and does awesome things. Jill Sobule's hit was "I Kissed A Girl." Jill Sobule has a really funny, clever song called "Heroes," check it out... i like billy bragg, those albums with him and wilco playing woodie guthrie songs are pretty fantastic. you're 25 and went through a divorce a few years ago? thats pretty harsh. get married right at 18? you know i remember things about billy bragg most of you younger guys won't. when billy came out he was touring with the smiths and sort of liked by those guys and taken under their collective wing. he was like a shot in th arm to punk because it was the dylan meets strummer/clash meets the seemingly clean cut passionate smiths...a cool look and a great batch of songs. i saw him with michelle shocked and it was a great show although michelle shocked was very annoying. anyway, there wa a time when he was the man and looked at as a promsing new star in the same way dylan and springsteen once were. now i kinda like him but i also like a million other more interesting things so his presence isn't as fresh now... "You're fucking 25 years old, not 45. I'm 27 and feel more excited about music now then I ever have." "You're fucking 25 years old, not 45. I'm 27 and feel more excited about music now then I ever have." damn... scanner If i can get to a scaner I will post the setlist yeah, I read to the point where you said you havn't been excited about a show for "years". yeah, give up now, this is a rediculous statement, there are plenty of absolutely great bands and if you're not excited to see ANY ofd them, then you shouldn't be writing for a news site. You're fucking 25 years old, not 45. I'm 27 and feel more excited about music now then I ever have. What an awesome review. I really enjoyed that read. So glad to see that there are "older" people who can still enjoy shows so much. Jill Sobule? I remember that broad....what was her single? |
