Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)

I try to have an open mind about music. I respect the bands Fat chooses to sign, because generally they don’t let me down. Unfortunately, disappointment is bound to happen sooner or later.

Let me start by saying that Nightmerica is not a terrible record. The intro track, "Bombs Over Brooklyn," boasts a good mid-tempo riff structure with vocalist Chon Travis belting out some very Davey Havok-esque crooning & screaming.

Fact of the matter is, a lot of this album sounds like older AFI, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Some of the call-and-answer choruses can get a little played-out and sound forced, but the real confusion comes when the band tries to completely change styles on a few songs.

After the first 2 songs showcase some high energy, the 3rd track, "Lottery," comes off as rather stale and lethargic. The gloomy vocals are only surpassed by some seemingly uninspired lyrics. Simplistic and tiresome, the song just seems to drag on.

The attempt at diversity is again revisited in the band’s first single, "Pray for Me." Again, we’re hearing yet another style. The whiny vocals combined with the high-pitched "aaaahhhaaaaaaaaaaaaa-uhhhhhhhhh-uhhhhhhhhh-ohhhhhhhhh" create almost a ping of annoyance in the listener’s ear. The chorus lyrics, inserted between the "gang whines," really do this one in;

I want you to be my lover,
And I don't want to face another night like this,
And these lips won't touch another,
Not as long as there's a longing for your kiss
But I regress. There are certainly some great songs on this album. Chon has great range in his vocals, and the musicanship is extremely tight, even on the tracks I didn't care for. I don’t have a bias against the love songs or slow jams, but I really think these fellas should work on establishing a firm identity on their sound before expanding in so many directions. This record is just all over the map. One minute we’ve got some Goth Bay hardcore, the next we’ve got Morrissey.

We're jolted by another curveball on the album closer, "Truth Has Failed." Ironically, this one is really a great song. The slower, piano-driven melody intermingled with acoustic guitars and softer backing vocals blend into a very harmonically pleasing end to a seemingly chaotic record. Maybe this was the initial intention, but my focus dwindled along the way.

Let me stress again, Love Equals Death is not a bad band, and Nightmerica has some really good songs. But the album itself lacks direction and seems almost rushed. Had a few songs been plucked to put out an EP, or maybe the band focused on a style, and then moved towards evolving that into another sound, they could be HUGE. But there’s just too much going on for one album. Especially from a band that many are not too familiar with.

    My Score:

its very obviously a mid-period AFI ripoff. but it has great energy and the singer maybe ripping davey off COMPLETELY, but he does it damn well!!

I get elements of Explosion, Alkaline Trio and definitly AFI. Are these guys trying to appeal to somekind of mainstream market from the get go? where is the bands identity What has happend to punk these days?

theres a lot of really good songs on this album even the slower songs are good..but its sounds kinda weird at first..

maybe the lyrics could be a lil better...but overall its their first full lenght...and its not bad at all

Apparently, we're all "close-minded, bitter and jaded scene fucks" for not liking the band on Fat that's as close as possible to the stuff on MTV. I did not know that disliking goth-punk meant I was jaded and close-minded. I mean, I know I'm jaded. But, close-minded. Dude, I like everything from The Lawrence Arms to Blink-182 to Bob Dylan to Peter Gabriel to Whiskeytown to Matchbox 20. Most of us have pretty widespread tastes.

yeah, maybe its silly that i put it on every post in a review, since my emails stay on the front page, but like for other articles, its pretty important you know? i mean, what if i dont post it in one article, and someone wants to get a hold of me, they then have to go find an article i DID post my address.

The Loved Ones - Good pop-punk
Love Equals Death - gothy-melodic hardcore with potential
St. Catherines - Great. Really great.
Soviettes - Didn't like them until LPIII
Epoxies - Fun, but not my bag
Smoke or Fire - Just start playing "Loving, Self-Loathing" live and we're all good
Western Addiction - Great sound, terrible stage presence

My use of the word "haters" bothers you? I figured that was short hand for "close-minded, bitter and jaded scene fucks that post on this board". There, happy now?

To the other guy, I like all of those bands. I think you are being harsh and holding bands who have released maybe their first or second serious release with bands who have established a long career and identity. Its an unfair comparison that the new bands will NEVER win.

Given time, I think some of those bands will go on and be comperable to the older bands you are comparing them to.

    Soviettes
    Epoxies
    Smoke or Fire
Western Addiction .... did I miss any?

This is a rather blind blanket statement, but I can safely bet that none of these bands will ever hold a candle to any of the established Fat Wreck bands. Sure they're young (sans the Loved Ones) and havent had a fair chance to develop their sound or garner as much fan support as the older bands. I strongly feel that the newer stuff is lacking in variety compared to: NOFX, Lagwagon, Propagandhi, Swingin' Utters, Good Riddance, The Lawrence Arms, Against Me!, Mad Caddies (say what you will, the next record will be great). I honestly haven't listned to many of these new bands but I highly doubt they can mesh styles like the aforementioned bands. Oh yeah, and Oh! Calcutta! is a severe dissapointment, what happened to the Larry Arms emo/ballad/folky side?

    Let the shit blizzard commence!

I think you guys are crazy if you don't give this band a chance. They are amazing and I'm sorry but this is one of the best albums to have come out in a while. I saw them live a while ago, and was blown away by their show, and I picked this album up because of that. Its a great album! I love it!

I actually even LOVE the two songs that sickboi said hurt his ears, they threw me at first too but those slower songs are some of the best written on the album.

Those of you who are hating on them are crazy, come on, even you haters admit to not hearing much from them. Even sickboi mentions he likes most of the songs! Its a shame that this site is so commited to hating this band, they don't deserve it. They aren't trying to sound like anyone, and they sound as much like AFI as maybe Tiger Army does. Its similar but not a clone by any means.

Its not hard to love this album once you hear it all, some slow songs, mostly fast songs, all extremely well written, they mix it up and I think this is going to be a band to watch in the future. You don't like them, because you never give it a real chance its your loss.

Posted by TheNightProwler on 2006-04-03 12:25:13

It's hard to judge just based on the few songs I've heard but from what I heard this is basically the first Fat Wreck release in a while that I have no interest in buying or even checking out in any further manner. Seems like this band trys too hard to be to try all these different styles and the lead singer just sounds too much like he's trying to be in AFI.

It probably is a good thing they're on Fat otherwise more people would be tearing this shit apart.

Internet Ha. Possibly while growing a wave of zits and getting his virginity back, sickboi called someone a "stupid fuck" for typing a fairly harmless and reasonable comment. Oh, the Internet! How volatile the kids are!

I typed that because the person was trying to call out an error that wasn't present, and was obviously doing it in an attempt to discredit me. And I'm pretty far from your description, son. Haven't had a zit in years, and how does one "get his virginity back"? Got a Delorean, cockass? Your attempt to be witty is the real joke here.

so the album cover looks like a death metal band.
sickboi says it sounds like old afi, when, although it was a major stretch, they could still be referred to as hardcore.
i click on the first track on their myspace page and its just generic pop punk.
    weak.

jones - does the fact that no one got your joke make it a bad joke or make everyone else thick?

didn't like the mp3s from these. some great bands on Fat at mo but Love Equals Death, Epoxies, Soviettes and Western Addiction are dull and weak in my opinion. Not made my mind up about the Sainte Caths yet, the MP3s are good but totally unimpressed with their back catalogue

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, April 2, 2006 at 1:10 PM (EDT)
    My Score:

This band COULD be good. They can obviously play instruments, they're into the straight up melodic punk that Fat specializes in, and the record has great production values -- BUT, as its been pointed out, their image and their songs are such a fucking JOKE. This shit is seriously cringe-worthy.
First, they need to drop the whole suckin' on AFI's dick thing they got going on. I already have old AFI records, don't need anymore of 'em. Second, someone else needs to write their lyrics. They're just bad. Third, everything about this band's look comes right from Hot Topic. And as cliched as it is to say that about a band these days, this one really is deserving of it.
The worst part is, I think they could actually be good if they wanted to. Too bad...

Those lyrics are about Dominic, right?"

i think it's about one of the producers on their last record and how he tried to manipulate the band's sound to make it more radio friendly. the dominic thing came after that record was out.

I heard one of their songs...the description said it was "a tribute to the Misfits". It was kinda catchy, but not all that great. Basically, this is average pop-punk, the sort of late-90's Warped Tour style that was (I guess is) really popular. The horror posing is kinda stupid, and their logo is something like a heart, an equals sign, and a skull. Not worth the time it took to write this post.

Looking forward to hearing this. All these guys are coming out of a lot of the same NorCal scenes that AFI cut their teeth in, and have had bands & shows with them, etc., over the years. It's not odd that they've got what sounds like a lot of diverse-in-an-AFI-kind-of-way sound on this record.

Jones, the "move to [fill in the country] if you don't like the US" is lame. It was lame and illogical in the 1960s and it's still lame and illogical. That's how I read your comment. I live here, I was born here, I love the US, but the government and large corporations are out of control and responsible for some very sick, brutal situations around the world- all while they wrap themselves in our shared flag.

"Dissent Is Patriotic"- without it we'd still be a British colony.

i like how people are allowed to automatically write bands off because of the label, but if someone gives a band credit for being on a certain label, that is just wrong....

Posted by sickboi on 2006-03-31 15:21:51

For those with the "you're lenient because its a Fat release"....consider this:

    1. When a well-liked and respected label puts something out, you're bound to be interested, this is why an emphasis is put on the label
    2. Fat has been known to sign bands they like, not necessarily what's hip
    3. If this was on Victory, some may automatically assume it sucks because they hate the label, and there are many that have this same view of Fat
    4. A review is AN OPINION. I am generally a fan of Fat releases, therefore, when one comes up that I'm kinda like "eh", it throws me for a loop. I'm sure many of you feel the same way about No Idea, Dischord, etc.

    My Score:

This album is decent; nothing special though. I read on here that Fat has signed a couple new bands, but I didn't take much interest in listening to any of them. But, once I heard the Saint Catherines, I decided to pick this up without hearing any of it.

But, after hearing the Saint Catherines, I was kind of disappointed with this. But then again, it's better than most everything else being released.

The point? If this came out on Victory, it would be mocked on these forums. To those who don't know the band, it looks like a crass, cynical attempt to bandwagon jump on both the goth/emo trend championed by MCR and the quasipolitical trend started by American Idiot. It looks like either a cash grab or a band with no identity.

you didn't listen to this album, did you? i don't get where half of you are getting the MCR comparison from...and i would know, i do indeed listen to MCR.

Does anyone else think it's funny that people below are saying things like "well, i dunno about this but it IS on Fat" Get off of fat mikes dick. He has put out bad bands before. If it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck...or should I say shit.

Posted by WilliamZabka on 2006-03-31 11:52:26

I listened to Fat Mike's Podcast where they played a tune from these guys and I LOVE IT. I really was looking forward to picking this up.... but I listened to other samples from the FaT site, and they stink. Now I have mixed feelings about the record.

    horrible, horrible album art.

"Reason for a 6? I liked it more than hated it."

You didn't come off like that in the review.

    Love Equals Deargh

    digress

    Those questioning the score....

Honestly, I considered going with a 5, but the good stuff on here is really good. Its about 4 songs that take away from it, which I focused my review. Its interesting, I think this band has a lot of potential if they'd cut the cheeseball shit and go with what works for them.

Reason for a 6? I liked it more than hated it.

No regress, stupid fuck. I returned to a previous, less-developed statement.

I am still undecided with the whole album. It's a little slower than i had expected.

Posted by darkstarm on 2006-03-31 02:02:38

Why keep stressing this is from Fat Wreck in the review? The first time I heard this band I thought it was nothing that great. Their name is awful, everything about it screams "you guys are taking the wrong path!" but whatever. Six seems like a pity score for what the review actually says, cause it sounds like you wanted to give this a two.

Still no Sainte Catherines review? Booo!

Perhaps considering the review you gave, you should've given this a four or five.

    My Score:

scruffys right. but that's essentialy what i said about the loved ones (although pop punk, and not mall emo)

everything i've heard from these guys has been pretty mediocre, nothing strikingly original or too much of a carbon copy, but nothing too exciting either.

at least in the last few years Fat's label has progressed past the Epitfat sound.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 31, 2006 at 1:21 AM (EST)

    which is worse?
the band name or the album name?

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 31, 2006 at 12:49 AM (EST)

Scruffy is 100% correct... Remember when Fat released that EP by The Fight, which was just bad pop punk?

I think sometimes, bands can buy their way into a release on a respected label like Fat. They count on people who refuse to be dissapointed in their roster to not say when it sucks.

Well, this sucks. Mid 90's AFI sucked. And this is mostly worse than that.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 31, 2006 at 12:39 AM (EST)

I agree with Scruffy. I haven't heard this yet. But from the time I first saw the cover of this on fat.com,read their bio and saw the picture of them I thought this was going to be some kind of from first to last kind of band.

I haven't heard it so I probably shouldn't be so harsh yet.

Posted by LevitateMe on 2006-03-31 00:36:09

It's not really a tongue twister.

    Posted by allison_le_gnome on 2006-03-31 00:36:01

To those who don't know the band, it looks like a crass, cynical attempt to bandwagon jump on both the goth/emo trend championed by MCR and the quasipolitical trend started by American Idiot.

Exactly. I'm a little disappointed in Fat for putting out something like this. It's possible we're just misinterpreting it, but it's suspiciously convenient.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 31, 2006 at 12:29 AM (EST)

I disagree with almost everything in this review. This is one of the best releases so far this year.

Posted by SalsaShark on 2006-03-31 00:29:12

Scruffy is absolutely right. This record has sort of been exonerated because its on Fat, which just isn't right.

Considering I'm not particularly interested in listening to this band's music, do they sound like they could be on Victory?

Posted by notfeelingcreative on 2006-03-31 00:25:48

I agree, for the past 11 years or so fat has been consistently good, with only a few exceptions, from what I've heard, this seems to be one of those exceptions for me.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 31, 2006 at 12:19 AM (EST)

I'm really liking this album now, but I wish they'd picked a stronger song than Pray For Me to make a video for.

Posted by BTown on 2006-03-31 00:17:41

Also, I think that their name is kinda lame.
    Just me?

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-03-31 00:17:15

I don't know much about this band. I could like them. But for the sake of argument, I'd like to point out:
    Name: Love Equals Death
    Album Title: Nightmerica
Album art: Zombie girl in front of dark background with small American Flag
Is it different? Am I wrong? It's on Fat, so I'd like to think I'm wrong.

Posted by BTown on 2006-03-31 00:16:33
    My Score:

I thought this was a really good review of the album.
Alot of these songs are really solid, but like was mentioned, they branch out in so many directions at times that it makes the album overall a let down.
