Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Refused are fucking dead.

But the autopsy is kinda half-assed.

Refused being fucking dead is a fact well-ingrained into the minds of most who attest to enjoy punk rock. This fact has been attempted to be constructed in a form of visual media for several years now by Burning Heart Records and guitarist Kristofer Steen, who documented and anchored the footage that would eventually make up Refused Are Fucking Dead, a DVD taking a look at the legendary Swedish hardcore band's final days. And considering this piece of potential history has been under the knife for such a considerably long time, the results are slightly disappointing.

The main feature here doesn't even eclipse the 40-minute mark, credits included. And it's hard to give credit to the documentary in terms of the quantity/quality argument, as it still feels a bit incomplete. Visually, it's stunning, as Steen's camera captures beautifully clear, digital shots of the band members performing situated tasks (walking, writing, etc.) while the narration takes place. Steen slips into arty territory with fast-motion clips of random landscapes and such, but his soundtracks are wonderful, as he tends to employ beautiful, moving classical pieces.

The narration, by the way, is mostly in Swedish, but the DVD has an English subtitles option that smartly forgoes them when English is being spoken the few times it is.

However, live footage is miniscule, with only three complete live songs contained within the documentary, all from the same venue. The green-tinted footage of the band's final show ever, at a basement in Harrisonburg, VA, feels like a blessing to see, but it serves up perhaps half of "Rather Be Dead" and little else.

As far as the story itself, the band members are honest and open, with the focus on the title of the DVD itself. There's a drastically brief look at how the band started, while most of the time the talking heads of Dennis Lyxzén, David Sandström, and Jon Brännström are used to an advantage. The feelings of loss, desperation, and hopelessness regarding the band's situation are conveyed well, especially with fluent coverage of Brännström's immediate fallout ocurring during what would be the band's final tour, one in the U.S. in late 1999. One does get the sense of what the band was feeling for the most part; they even acknowledge the contradiction of their beliefs and actions at one point from one band member's view, but it almost feels like something's being held back.

The extras appear full of effort on paper. Live videos of 9 selections off the band's 1998 landmark The Shape of Punk to Come are offered, as well as their music videos for "Rather Be Dead" and "New Noise." All these live videos appear to be bootlegs or shot by amateurs (with no intended offense to the respective filmographers). Consequentially, the results are quite mixed. The video quality of "Worms of the Senses / Faculties of the Skull" is downright terrible, and the audio doesn't fare entirely better, as Lyxzén's voice is virtually inaudible for the duration of the entire song. "Liberation Frequency," "Summerholidays vs. Punkroutine" and "The Deadly Rythm" are better; the sight of the rest of the band members looking on as the stop-starts usher in the latter is one to see. "The Refused Party Progam" has spectacular video quality with the band giving off an admirably energetic performance, but the audio is horribly minimized in volume. Sadly, there's no "The Apollo Progamme Was a Hoax" here, which would've been an amazing performance to watch.

Refused Are Fucking Dead isn't necessarily outright bad, but it's disappointing in how simply economical it is, a strange term to use when referring to Refused, and that it prevents it from really acting as a complete final chapter on a band who deserves as extensive of one as any.

    My Score:

i dunno.... i thought it was good. and i do definitly think i represents a peice of punk history. my only problem was the obvious voice overs. there are times when Dennis should be singing, but he stops to breath which is understandable. but you can still hear his voice. hes not singing, and i dont know if they actually did that at shows or just for the dvd. and the last song, Rather Be Dead, at their last performance. the members of the band arent even playing their instruments and you can still hear Rather Be Dead playing. that was my only problem with it. i think it had excellent extras, and i think it should get a 10.

I think the 'film' was pretty decent.
The performances in the film itself were great.
The live footage is pretty awful . . . but remember, this was before digital video was within the reach of the common consumer.

The thing that interested me more was the element of the story about where their punk rock ethos lead them . . .

neither the "punk rock ethos' nor anti-capitalism or any revolution are immune from the failures, corruption, flaws and weaknesses of people.
Even if the ethos, the drive, the 'cause' can be perfected - the people fighting for it are still hopelessly flawed and prone to do things that are directly opposed to that cause.

How much power does your ethos have when you're just mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted?

When 'real' tragedy strikes (death, conspiracy, murder) we can fantasize and imagine that everything would have been great and perfect if only the tragedy hadn't occurred. We can imagine that these hero(es) could have done so much more, made so many more great albums, revolutionized the world if only they hadn't died/got sick/been betrayed.

But when things work themselves out naturally - we get a "real" ending. Failure, despair, despondancy, disappointment, resentment, disillusionment - or worse . . . the 'hero' will fade into mediocrity.

I think this film is a prime example of reality.
No answers, no reexamination of reason, no more cause, very little understanding . . .

    My Score:

I finally got the DVD. I think it was better than what the reviewer said. The film's artistic side is top notch and the music is perfect. The sound of the live videos is not that great, but there's some stellar performance to see. The videos for "New Noise" and "Rather Be Dead" are also great additions. But like the reviewer said, it's pretty short.

" But these guys were not situationists, and their music sounds like a less interesting latter-era Born Against than NoU."

I personally think that Dennis didn't understand the comedic aspect of NOU and took it all too seriously. The jazz influence is also very obviously from NOU. They dress the same. The whole espionage/noir thing is the same. The artwork looks the same. The aesthetic (the ulysses aesthetic?) is the same. The messages are similar, except that NOU comes off as tongue-in-cheek and Refused comes off as pompous.

I would say that Refused also drew heavily from Born Against as well (obviously...Refused is fucking dead?) especially musically. The aesthetic and the act are all NOU though.

Born Against NOU = Refused! Hoorah!

Hey, when you put great bands together, you usually get a great band.

I saw one of the last shows on the tour (DC) I think it was like the second to last show. It was without a doubt one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen in my life. I remeber talking to Pony when he got back from that tour. Frodus had a hell of a time after Refused left. Lot of problems and shit.

Score is for that awesome show though. There will never be a band that will blow me away live like Refused did. I feel pretty lucky to have been there.

    My Score:

so, i got my dvd yesterday. i just watched it. I have to say, it's a bit disappointing like has been said. There has just been so much hype about the dvd that i expected so much more from it. I expected to see what was performed at their last show before it was shut down. I guess that was just a misunderstanding in what was told about the dvd.

but It was really interesting to see the story of how the band began, and to hear what they had to say about the breakdown of it all. does anyone know where in atlanta that show was? i think it was the masquerade. if so it's an odd feeling knowing the room jon had his "breakdown" in. and the spot where they had their band meeting.

anyway.... i expected a lot from the dvd, but got less than that. it's a little upsetting, but in all, i liked it. very artsy, as said. but it was put together well. it just left me wanting more.

i haven't watched all the live footage yet, but what i've seen is really good. i really love the footage shot by the drummer. that guy was so fantastic.

They were always like this, and if you expected them to release a 6 hour complete band story dvd with 3 hours of live footage (which they could've easy done in the time it took to get the god damn thing out), you expected something that isn't refused. Why does Refused get called a Nation Of Ulysses ripoff? My guess is that the people saying it have never even heard NOU and read it somewhere. They don't sound alike so the only aspect where they're similar is the liner notes and NOU's liner notes were Tounge in Cheek whereas Refused's were serious.

Maybe I'm just not paying enough attention, but they sounded like Dillinger Escape Plan. And I HATE DEP. obnoxious must be the new synonym for sexified.

This dvd is actually a bit better than the review gives it credit. The 'film' portion could have been longer, but if you've kept up with the members post-refused (especially sandstrom) its pretty on target.

The live videos for each song on the shape of punk to come are nice.

And, 'songs to fan the flames....' is a great album, much more than average hardcore.

Shape of...is a phenomenal record that stands the test of time.

Sandstrom's 3 post-refused records are pretty amazing and inspiring as well. If you look hard, his entire 'grandpa' album is free online.

If you were into the band when they were together it's a pretty good legacy overview, because no matter if you like it or not, the band were always like that.

But i totally get why you're all totally hating on this, because as i previously said, they've always been incredibly obnoxious people who wrote pretty great songs, and if you don't understand that odds are you probably just think they were a "groundbreaking hardcore band who put back politics into music when it had been stale for years".

They wrote some great tunes and played some amazing shows, the end.

Mind you, being from Argentina, I haven't had the chance to watch the DVD yet (ordered it last Friday) but to all of you who are voicing your disappointment because the live footage is sub-par, haven't you thought that maybe the purpose of this DVD was to focuse more on the biographical aspects of the band? I mean, with music DVDs it's either a documentary (this case) or a live performance. OK, maybe you were expecting both in a double disc? When it's about my favourite bands I for one enjoy interviews as much as the live performance. That's why I expected more from the Bad Religion Live at the Palladium DVD in terms of insights from the band members. I found them to be pretty basic for the hardcore fan (crossbuster meaning, band name meaning). And that one also took like more than two years to be edited.

Not to say it wasnt great to see some live performances and see the band members up close and personal revealing themselves in a way that is far too scarce in punk rock today, but all in all like the review said something was missing. I guess in the end Refused really are fucking dead.

But where is the new VTM?

I just got it maybe a week ago. I'm in the process of listening and will eventually review it. I feel like I'm snottily answering a publicist's email.

And to Mr. Punctuation asking about Maritime -- there's no Maritime review in the queue.

I understand why a lot of people were disappointed. We were all expecting Along The Way and we got Refused by-way-of Lars Von Trier.

I suppose it's par for the course given the band we're talking about, but still, I would have loved to see a traditional band DVD.

Of course, Fugazi's Instrument is proof that you can be arty while still being thorough. That disc is still the absolute one to beat; as esoteric and unique as Fugazi while thoroughly documenting the band through their entire career.
