Some people argue that writing a review about a band you love is a conflict of interest; I'm not sure why that would be, after all, the biggest fans are usually the harshest critics, but nonetheless, it should be clear that your humble writer is a fan; not just of their last, TVT release, A Place Called Home, but of their triumphant Revelation-era releases, and even beyond that. Ignite is a band that has managed to write increasingly memorable releases and over a lengthy career, to define themselves as a band of both ethical and music integrity and overwhelming talent, and these are scarce and valuable resources.

The band has jumped from label to label, previously landing on TVT in the post-Dookie signing frenzy and being overlooked by a label without the capacity to understand their music; thankfully, the recent signing to upstart hardcore/rock label Abacus seems as good a place as any for them because Ignite is -- despite Zoli's operatic range and the band's technical proficiency -- a passionate hardcore band, and one of a the best around.

The album opens with a one-minute intro, something that can be a little unnecessary but works rather well as a lead-in to “Bleeding,” a track that manages to thoughtfully attack one of the dominant themes of the album: fear and freedom. Accompanied by full gang vocals, Zoli tackles the issue with a lyrical nuance and restraint not usually expected from this music. The second track, “Fear Is Our Tradition” continues to look at the subject matter, and acts as a real showcase for Zoli's talents, with intricately layered vocal harmonies and the other “theme” of the record: hooks. Ignite may be an angry, powerful band, but they want you singing along.

Interestingly, the band's opening few tracks are more mid-tempo, while the band hits full speed for the second half; the positively ripping “Are You Listening?” takes a few seconds to get going, but when it does, it's not just relentlessly catchy, but a showcase for the incredible amount of musical talent throughout this band. The next track, “Three Years” actually had my jaw drop at one point, when Zoli really stretches his range and while I can't imagine he's going to be signing it live, the bridge in the track is quite spectacular.

The most “traditional” Ignite track is perhaps, “Know Your History,” which -- aside from Cameron Webb's production -- could have appeared on the best of the band's Revelation catalog; just straightforward, fast, metal-free hardcore. The final two tracks on the album may be a surprise to some, the first: a tasteful and aggressive cover of U2's “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” which is a live favorite and for good reason.

The last is the risky, but occaisonally great acoustic closer; while Zoli occaisonally sounds like a slightly more adept Eddie Vedder, the track works in the context of the album. After tracks that consistently up the ante for speed and vitriol, the hopeful closer acts as a nice bookend to the album and resonates even after the CD stops spinning. Was it not for the earnestness of the performance and the integrity of the band, it might not have worked, but as expected, Ignite pulls it off.

With Our Darkest Days, Ignite has ended a nearly six-year absence from recording, and has delivered a record worthy of the wait. This is hardcore and it is great.

This album is seriously in contention for album of the year.
If only I weren't slightly more partial to Moneen...
That said, this album has re-established my faith in hardcore. Solid album from a solid band. Hope they make it to Winnipeg someday.

"really diggin this band lately. what are the fans like at thier shows they are comming close by me but i dont wanna go if im gonna have to deal with jocks and tough guy hardcore assholes"

You'll probably see a couple "tough guys hardcore assholes" there but it won't be the majority of the people or even a significative percentage. If you are lucky enough to go to a ignite show when on the same day, somewhere on the other side of the town there's a madball show, you'll see even less. As for jocks, there probably are some (as there are probably people from any type you can classify, even if it's just one person), but unless you're specifically looking for them and trying to find them, they'll get dilluted amongst finger pointing hardcore kids or hardcore "old kids". Ignite is one of the greatest bands i've seen live, even if i've only seen them twice (the third time will be in a month).

    Reddish,

I don't care for the idea that people should not have opinions about historical events just because they didn't happen in their home country. Your argument echos of some Spaniards' backlash at Neil Young for singing "Cortez the Killer." Human behavior and experience knows no nationality, and commentary on "foreign" events is necesarry to keeping people from becoming self-absorbed, isolated fucks.

Also, my point on "sunday, bloody sunday" is that it would be equally bad choice if U2 sang a song about Franz Ferdinand getting shot. However, Bono has a big mouth and would probably sing a song about a pivotal point in Austro-Hungarian and world politics:

    My Score:

This is heads and tails over "A Place Called Home". Still, the cover of "Sunday Bloody Sunday"seemed to lack depth. I think teglas is Czech or Croatan. The song is very Irish and very personal I liked the last acoustic song on the the last track though I don't know the song title. It's no "Call On MY Brothers" but definitely "Past Our Means".

I really thought they were going to pull a SOIA and put out a career reviving album. This definitely puts them in the ballpark, but I a not so sure they pulled out a home run.

It's ok not to like an album and say so while giving a valid reason on why but seriously, what the hell made you think Ignite was a metalcore band and where the hell do you see 80's metal in it? This is melodic hardcore-punk just like so many other bands, although with a lot of really catchy songs. i can even accept ElVaquero's opinion on it as i can see where he's goin for, but metal and metalcore? wha?

Every single person on this site claimed Oh Calutta was the best thing eva, despite it's huge flaws.

Posted by ElVaquero on 2006-05-17 02:14:47
    My Score:

I'm not so sure why I have to like this album. Saying that people that think another record is better than this is automatically a lemming... well isn't that sort of lemming environment behavior? There was far less universal praise for Oh! Calcutta!, an album which is basically a traditional Chicago punk rock album (short, fast, loud). By contrast, this is much less punk and I can see how someone who might come to this site from a punk background wouldn't like the cheesey (though skilled) vocals and formulaic song writing.

I'm not saying it's a bad album, but I don't think it deserves nearly the praise its receiving (or even the praise that Oh! Calcutta! received and I'd put that in my top 5 for the year). It's very very possible to not like this album, but hey, maybe I'm just a lemming. By myself.

I never really got into A Place Called Home, but this is looking very appealing. I will probably pick it up at some point. It will be a random, spontaneous purchase.

I didn't know Cameron Webb produced it. This makes it look even more promising. Webb gained my respect with his work on Social Distortion's "Sex, Love, and Rock'n'Roll" as well as Motörhead's "Inferno".

I've heard this band on comps and they never really did anything for me. Midtempo hardcore has never made any sense to me - it always sounds like emasculated metal.

    Posted by Dante3000 on 2006-05-16 13:26:58
    My Score:

I really love this album. It's one of those albums that's really good and it's easy to get into on the first listen. I'm suprised there is so much positive reasponse considering the accesibility of the music. Most stuff that is this listener friendly get's smashed on these boards.

So i was noticing it sounds like a lot of the back ups are just tracks of the lead singer. Do they pull it off well live, or do the other guys just actually sound like the singer? As I've never seen them.

Probably not my favourite Ignite release, but then again, even the "least" of Ignite's work is better than most of the stuff being released nowadays.

I dig on it when they have that Helmet/Quicksand meets 7 Seconds vibe going, but around the middle, it bogs down a bit with some material that wouldn't seem out of place on a TRL countdown (Granted, Zoli can actually sing his way through those songs. Day in and day out...without the aid of ProTooled crap). Still a great release though.

I've liked Ignite since last decade and had been looking forward to this with a huge weight of expectation. I have to say the first time I heard this (after my inital euphoria/notalgia faded) I was quite disappointed.
It was not as fast, hard and catchy as the melodic hardcore i have become familiar with (eg. No Trigger) over the last couple of years.
I've been listening to it since easter and it has continually grown on me. Zoli is exceptional. The music is solid and fantastic and Ignite have produced a great album.
Not the earth shattering all conquering cd I was hoping for but definately something worthy of a top 5 in the end of the year.
Go get this if you are a fan of punk/hardcore/etc.
Its solid, quick, catchy and sing along friendly.
    My fav song is Strength.
Can Rise Against or Strike Anywhere top this?

i knew someone was going to say it from the moment i posted it. As i said in my previous comment, i feel Ignite have evolved from album to album in what concernes the style they played. By that, i mean this album picks up from where A place called home left of after evolving from Call On My Brothers. That is the reason why it's easier to me to compare this album with A Place Called Home. As for the other releases i didn't include them in the comparison, because not only have they got pretty much the same songs in various mixes to form different releases, but also because neither can be called a full length.

My ratings for the 3 full lengths would be - COMB - 8, APCH - 9, ODD - 8. And in little more than a month i'm seeing them live for the third time, which i hope is a perfect 10.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 6:18 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

Not to be snide, but I wonder how many people are only going to compare Our Darkest Days to A Place Called Home, but not Call On My Brothers... there is a bigger frame of reference at work here and APCH definitely doesn't give Ignite's full picture.

Posted by ArtRoss on 2006-05-16 06:12:24
    My Score:

I like it a lot, though not as much as A Place Called Home. I think Ignite has consistently evolved and developed in a way that is easy for someone that doesn't even know them, to order their discography from least to most recent, and still clearly distinguish Ignite's albums with the albums released by other bands in the same genre/style.

I liked Poverty For All and Slowdown the most out of single songs in the album. The reason why i didn't give the album a 9 or 10 was because i liked a place called home better, and while a band can release two great albums, i save the 10 for perfect albums (in my opinion obviously), which would lead me to not give a 10 to either of the two. There are some good songs in this album, some great songs, a very nice flow throughout the album but with a boring song in it that slightly drops the excitement of listening to it.

Overall i gave it an 8, although it isn't that far from a 9.

P.S. Since everyone seems to talk about the U2 cover, i won't use the fact that they repeated the song in two consecutive albums in the rating because it seems like it wasn't included in every A Place Called Home release.

    My Score:

sure, this shit is kinda cheesy. it's also kinda amazing in every possible way. one of those albums that just repeats in your head for weeks.

every single song is great, an astounding return to form.

    My Score:

i like a band that releases good stuff, instead of floating the stores with a mediocre album every year. Most of the great bands only had 2 or 3 albums (negative approach, gorilla biscuits, minor threat) and all those shitty bands have 10 records and 5 singles out (there are a few exceptions but this is a generalization that is necessary)

    "Lengthy career"?

I might be wrong, but isn't this their THIRD album? I'm counting their first record (the title was something about brotherhood I think), then "A Place Called Home" and then this. "Past Our Means" was 6 songs and with the length of hardcore tracks, it can't be considered anything other than an EP.

This band has been around for so long and doesn't seem to have much to show for it. What are their day jobs anyway?

    Album of the year.

"Know Your History" could be the best song they've ever written.

    4 and a half? Really?
I thought it was pretty boring. Reminded a lot of Pipe Down, but less AFI-ish.
But still... I think this is crap. Sorry!

I'm surprised the review doesnt mention "Slowdown" - the best song on the album.

This album is fantastic. It puts a lot of punk/hardcore works to shame and it captures their amazing live show pretty well. Kudos to you Ignite!

I thought it sounded like an entire disc of 'A Place Called Home' B-Sides. It's really good and produced well, but nothing really stands out. Definitely not worth the wait.
