There are always young bands at local shows that, whether consciously or not, have decided trend-hopping is the way to go when it comes to a musical endeavor. They are undeveloped and quite often unaware that emulation of idols tends to come off as a half-assed replica rather than a fresh creation. For all the effort NeverHood put into their sophomore release, it merely comes off sounding like one of those local acts that are content to recite the words of those who came before instead of finding their own voice.

Fragile Feelings and Debacle Dealings sounds good. The production is clear and very well done for an unsigned act. NeverHood also show that they have a keen sense of melody and a penchant for penning hooks. Still, the positives are outweighed by the fact that the band sound unsure of just who they want to be, instead too busy switching masks to ever show their real faces.

Opener “The Search for Shooting Stars” sounds like any pop-punk/emo act on Drive-Thru, while “Mechanical Maladjustment” is a blueprint for any band looking to ape Taking Back Sunday, and “Grey Skies, Blue Eyes” could be a Straylight Run B-side. Let’s also not forget the use of synth and double bass, in all their awkward and unrewarding glory, and don’t worry, the typical whiny vocals are also present and constantly struggling for those high notes.

NeverHood are not a bad band, just an uncreative one. Everything on Fragile Feelings and Debacle Dealings just feels eerily familiar, creating a sound that you will quickly understand, and then quickly forget along with the horde of other nameless pop-punk/emo acts that have crossed your path in the past.

    My Score:

I think the latest album shows the enormous potential and obvious talent Neverhood possesses to become a solid rock band. With the exception of Charlie T., few on this page realize the amount of work that goes into doing an album. Months are spent writing, rehearsing, recording, and producing an album. To take on that challenge requires an enormous talent. A talent that the reviewer himself acknowledges in saying, "The production is clear and very well done for an unsigned act. NeverHood also show that they have a keen sense of melody and a penchant for penning hooks." With that, I would have to say with confidence that Neverhood, is by far the most talented young band in Martin County, one of the best in the region, possibly one of the best in the South Florida. Call them unoriginal, call them cliche, but they are still talented, and with the amount of talent they possess, it's only a matter of time. Personally, I would have to disagree with the reviewer on his point that this band emulates other bands. Influences will always play a large part in any musician's music. I feel that this reviewer spends entirely too much time listening for those influences, but I don't blame him, it's much easier for him this way because he can brand them as uncreative and move on with his apparently succesful career. I can disect a band's album and list their influences just as easily as he can. It certainly doesn't take a webzine reviewer to do that, ha. The thing is, reviewers listen to hundreds of albums, signed and unsigned, so much that it can numb their ability to hear new, fresh sounds. Neverhood's album is a breath of fresh air. What makes it such a great album isn't some kind of revolutionary musical sound or structure, but the personalities that shine through in the music. After listening to the album you can't help but feel that Neverhood is the type of band that plays music because they enjoy it. And in today's music scene, that is a rare find. Neverhood has already left their mark in Martin County and will move on to bigger and better things, you can be sure of it. This album is great, one of the best I own. I can only expect even better on the next one. Great job guys.

this band used to be pretty goood about 5 years ago, anyways if they would deflate their heads, get rid of the shitty keyboardist, and write music like they used to, it would be worth listening to, anyways the new cd sucks hard, listen to the new last laugh, and charley i don't think you really mean what you wrote down there

right on brian, and to the band members bashing pn....

YOU GOT 4 OUT OF 10. THAT'S A GOOD SCORE. 5 is supposed to be average, and you're one step below average, and seeing as you're still an unsigned cliched pop band, being below average suits you pretty well.

but no matter what we will get bashed bc were an unsigned band.

Wow, Christ, okay. Did you not click the link I posted before? Are you completely oblivious to the hype and/or general praise given by editorial staff to No Trigger, This Is Hell, Motion City Soundtrack, Trophy Scars, A Textbook Tragedy, Somerset, Saosin and Ryan's Hope in the past, all of whom were lavished with it when they were unsigned? (This is not a pat yourself on the back post, I'm simply trying to prove a point with adequate proof.)

Additionally, this community LOVES Bomb the Music Industry!, Tragedy, and Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution. The former despises record labels, the middle releases their own albums, and the last have a cult following based on ONE self-released EP.

Conclusion: YOUR BAND SUCKS BECAUSE OF THE MUSIC YOU WRITE, NOT A LACK OF LABEL AFFILIATION. Once you get that through your head maybe you can stop being bitter because a webzine writer didn't like your album.

thats funny you would say that were not here to change bc every album we put out is more progressive and the new cd we are writing right now is gonna be even better!

but no matter what we will get bashed bc were an unsigned band.

well i guess we'll all just have to see by the end of summer.

Leave it to this site to bash unsigned bands...

after reading this review, i for some reason felt compelled to go find this bands myspace and take a listen. i hear alot of early getup kids/early brand new influences, awkwardly unimpassioned ben gibbard idolizing vocals and ninth grade lyrics. in all fairness though "crossed the line" is fun in its lackluster youthful glory.

this band obviously isnt here to change things. but if every band was original and innovative, no trend would stick around long enough to develope those mind-blowing bands we fall in love with. mediocrity serves its purpose. big ups to this band for giving it a shot.

Um...Rob...I think you forgot the part where you say that no one on this site has any taste in music, and that we shouldn't review things because we aren't in bands...

Thank you for the review. Even though it's not what I was hoping for, I appreciate you taking the time to listen and tell us what you think.

I love it when whiners are quickly and effectively shut up. Good work, Brian.

And to the guy at the bottom, if you really think this band is better than the review states, then why don't you tell us why rather than bitching about how you perceive the reviewers? Can you refute that their sound is original? Is there something about it that makes it stand out that maybe he didn't notice? Or is the guitar player in your chemistry lab?

Ahhh, pop-punk. "You'll Ruin it for Everyone"

I don't think that's necessarily true; I think if you review a lot of music though, you start to notice the stuff that really stands out and the more generic sounding stuff becomes harder to stomach.
