Upon first listening to Set Your Goals’ new, pirate-themed release Mutiny! and hearing the beginning of “Work in Progress,” one might jump to the conclusion that Set Your Goals have completely abandoned their hardcore influences and opted for a more straight-forward pop-punk feel for their debut full-length. However, after about a minute of thinking you’re listening to an acoustic song from a Blink-182 revival project, you’ll be shown that Set Your Goals haven’t completely abandoned their roots.

Love this album, saw them in stoke on monday night for the second time and they are really good live too! Great song writing and genre blending here. They aren't the first to do it, but they're definitely among the best. Awesome album. Damn good stuff. Terrible band. This really is what pop-punk should aspire to be. ha. yall say "best pop punk out there" like there is a massive field to compete in. The best pop/punk out there, doesnt get any better then these guys, so much energy in each song its almost impossible not to like it. It's a solid debut full length with some standout tracks, and I think they could put out something great in the future this album is really good. i saw this band earlier this year with No Trigger, who blew them out of the water by the way. I don't see what the big deal is about this band. The only song that is moderately enjoyable to me "Goonies Never Say Die" plus whether they intend to or not, at that show they were catering to the slam dancing faggots. Plus they had 2 vocalists when I saw them which I feel is completely unneccessary, but whatever floats your boat I guess. I wish they would not associate themselves remotely with CIV. If you've just broken up with your girlfriend or your friend has just died listen to Echoes (the last track). Fortunately, I only experienced the first of the aforementioned dilemmas, and this song made me realise that it didn't mean shit. not bad but i dont like one of the lead singers voices'. also the lyrics need improvement and that whole pirate shtick is lame. but the idea of bringing back the pop-core wasnt bad. Amazing. this is a good album. Posted by ncarlber on 2006-07-11 10:05:41 I really like the lyrics to this album. they're powerful. and everyone knows, the lyrics can make or break an album. This is the best album that I have heard in a long time. It's full of catchy positive lyrics, and an incredible sound. AND WHO THE FUCK DOESN'T LIKE GANG VOCALS!! incredible album. this will surly be in the my top 10 of 2006. this is too catchy...cant help but like it from beginning to end i thought reset was great but this album seems so produced. i was dissapointed by it. it seems like a label exec told these guys to ''make your music a little more approachable'' but yea to reiterate i loved reset and the original versions of the songs they rerecorded. good but too much mtv do-goodery eulogy sucks. that's about all there is to it. what the fuck is this poppy shit? I don't hate this album, but it was definitely a huge disappoint for me. I loved the EP, heard the song "Mutiny" and was really excited, only to be very let down when I heard the album in full. I'm sure maybe the songs sound better live, but the overproduction definitely ruins it. I really don't like the new version of This Very Moment, at all. I still really like Set Your Goals, but the album is just boring overall to me. I also think they overdid it a bit on the usage of 50 second intros too. ooh... of course i like "this very moment" too, but what the hell is up with those vocal and lyrical changes in the verses? It just goes against the flow.. I like the first 5 songs alot, from there it's just downhill. Am I the only one who thinks the less-nasally of the two singers sounds alot like Scott Radinsky? like everyone said, the title track is amazing. the rest is ok, no complaints, but nothing sticks out. everyone says the da da's remind them of blink (which they do), but they also remind me of "goodby skye harbor" by jimmy eat world. This time After reading the review/comments, and listening to the 2 songs on the site, I must agree this cd is (very) strangely like NFG. My thoughts are here: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/album.php?reviewid=8157 I want to like this band. I like where they're coming from... But it's so hard to dig this when their singers sound like every other emo/pop-punk band! What's up with that? Sickboi- the spoken parts are by far the worst parts of this album, and i'm always tempted to skip over them. There's a lot of shit talking on this album, these dudes better hope they don't get all big and popular, though I totally see that happening. Will- Overly produced late 90's radio pop punk VS overly produced mid 90's posi core. There's a lot of shit talking on this album, these dudes better hope they don't get all big and popular, though I totally see that happening. My top albums of 2006 so far: i was trying to see if i could get a free tshirt from this band, no store has this shit instock around here actually, when you come down to it, this only has 3 real good songs out of 10 Yeah - they pay tribute to CIV but CIV was a great band with really solid songs and decent lyrics. This band is just gradually getting more boring. I don't think the album is terrible but I was expecting more after the EP. Song #5 does it for me.I could care less about the rest of the album. A better introduction would have used the phrased "jumped ship." fucking great record. "They’re tackling selling out, being force-fed religion, maintaining relationships with family and friends, and taking risks in life." still looking forward to Gorilla Biscuits this summer most of you are f-ing crazy!!! this album is sooOOOOO AMAZING. listen to it a few times and stop trying to compare them to "other" bands. these guys are young and brilliant!!!! and the same people that gave this album 1 listen and decided to judge it will be the same ones that will come on here later trying to correct their mistakes!!!! I didn't listen to this album, but I heard their EP and I found it very annoying. i love this album. I hope when (not if) this band becomes huge, they don't push too much more into the pop side. That would be a shame. Building on what sickboi said, it is like half the members of NFG and half of Bane played together, and took the parts of each band out that I was never fond of. Dan is dead on. This album sounds like an EXACT mix of New Found Glory and Bane. And I'm not talking "influenced", I mean direct replication of those 2 bands playing together. Weird. this is much less blink 182 and much more new found glory good album Possibly the lamest band name I have ever seen. Am I the only one who thinks the less-nasally of the two singers sounds alot like Scott Radinsky? I am surprised by how much I enjoy this cd, its just fun to listen to. Possibly the lamest band name I have ever seen. actually, when you come down to it, this only has 3 real good songs out of 10 Oh yeah. I forgot the "raps". I like this album, but it seems as if they tried way too hard to merge different styles. They don't blend together, they jump from one to the other. this is definitely not a nine...but i would give it a 6.5 great, great record. it has moments showing so much promise, but I'm quite disappointed. yea other dude two below, the EP was ever so slightly better. "To Be Continued..." is the best track, no doubt. - Mikey216 Actually agree with the guy below, although this is alright the EP was much better. i don't know why, but this shit is so fucking great. only listened to this a couple times, but it sounded really good both listens. 9? Maybe. I'd say an 8 though personally. Good album, catchy songs. great fuckin album.the overproduced vocals are annoying at first but after a few listens you get used to them. catchy as hell. The only song I can even remember off this record is the title track; luckily, that song is just huge. I give this record a 7 solely on the back of that song. The comparison in to crime in stereo is understandable - but CIS is so much better. Lyrically and musically. This is a really boring record in comparison to their demo/ep. Typical, boring posi lyrics, over produced vocals, and a lack of any real standout tracks. |
