With Escape the Fate, Epitaph continue the trend they started with bands like From First to Last, Day of Contempt, and Matchbook Romance. That means that There’s No Sympathy for the Dead fits into the new school of emo/screamo/metalcore. If you can imagine Atreyu with a Drive-Thru Records singer, you should start to get the picture.

For the most part, Escape the Fate come off sounding pretty generic. They bring together big metal-riffed intros, melodic verses, double-bass breakdowns covered in Cookie Monster shouts, and lyrics about love that more often than not relate to violence, blood, flames, and death. What sets them apart from contemporaries is the presence of more metal moments. The band’s guitarists are able to craft some pretty solid riffs while their solos sound like they’ve been listening to Avenged Sevenfold’s latest record on repeat. Still, sometimes, like on “The Ransom,” the band merely sound like they are trying to follow in the footsteps of Hawthorne Heights and Underoath by penning the next big arena-screamo single.

For being metal-influenced screamo, Escape the Fate’s EP is not bad. They’ve made it clear via soaring solos and speedy riffs that they’ve got the chops, now they just need to find a way to serve them up so that they don’t always sound quite so familiar.

Yeah I Know Some People Dont Like Bands Like This.
I Personally Do I Think Their Music Is Ace.
But I Think People Should Give Them A Break.
In My View Any Band That Makes It Anywhere Should Get Some Credit.

So, yesterday, I went to this show, and there were like three ska/emo/metalcore bands there. It's not necessary, really. People: stop forming bands.

Ya, all this band is doing is taking the best things about the genre and putting them together. For the most part I like it and Epitaph has finally signed something from this genre thats worth listening to. But good god Brett, how many bands did ya have to go through to get to these guys?

pretty good review. its kind of nice to see a reasonable review for a bad album every once in awhile instead of the joke ones (which are usually funny, but still)

I like 'Situations.' However, that song isn't on this EP.

I hope this band reads this review, climb off their high horse, and realize what they are.

Matt gave a very fair review of this -- I know how I would have flaimed it, but he tackeled in away that emphasizes how generic Escape the Fate in a very mature sense.

    Kudos on the review!

Fuck this shit. Why doesn't Gurewitz just bitch slap kids that bring this to his table?

Very nice review Matt; it's so easy to slag this entire genre, but you gave the record a fair shake and came up with some very reasonable concerns.

if it weren't for their attitude they might've almost had a full star!

this band REALLY needed to exist.
