Why does summer always suck for great package club tours? Oh, shit, I totally remember...

But this year, things are different. The current tour featuring Lagwaon, the Lawrence Arms and A Wilhelm Scream is a breath of fresh air. Normally, a Sunday show would be a cause to take it easy, enjoy the bands and get to bed at a reasonable hour. Fuck that, benefit plans with sick days were made for shows like this.

I made my way to D.C. in plenty of time to get a few drinks, a great interview and plenty of time to still relax and have a good time. A Wilhelm Scream started the night off with a blazing set, comprised of material mainly from their two Nitro Records full-lengths, 2004's Mute Print and 2005's Ruiner. It was easily the best performance I've seen from them yet, and the crowd reacted the same. Constant fist-pumps and sing-alongs were witnessed the entire set for favorites like "Famous Friends and Fashion Drunks," "The Rip," "The King Is Dead," "Anchor End" and "Killing It." As an added bonus, the new single (of the same name) from the band's Jumpstart Records 7", Diver, was also peformed to an appreciative response. Full of energy and an obvious dedication, AWS are definitely a band worth checking out, regardless of the rest of the lineup. Luckily, the rest of the lineup wasn't a problem here.

The Lawrence Arms are either loved, or, well, liked. Org-core to the extreme, many of you are probably sick of hearing people cream themselves over them. Yes, hype aside, they are one of the few bands actually worthy of the praise. Great people, great albums, and one hell of a live show. This evening was no different. The band gave a great variety of songs from many of their albums, including 2 of my all-time favorites "Quincentuple Your Money" and "100 Resolutions." Other favorites included Oh! Calcutta! standouts "Great Lakes, Great Escapes," "Recovering the Opposable Thumb" and "Cut It Up." During (what I've been told) a rare performance of "Your Gravest Words," Chris busted one his guitar strings and stubbornly refused a replacement guitar until he was able to transition the performance smoothly. Maybe to some that doesn't seem like a big deal, but to those who maybe had never seen the song performed before (I really have no idea how much of a "rarity" it is), I'm sure it was greatly appreciated, and to your humble narrator, it was a subtle showing of professionalism. (I've seen less bands stop a whole fucking set for less.)

Not to be outdone, Joey Cape and company stormed the stage for the final performance of the night, and I was extremely excited. I've been listening to Lagwagon for over 10 years, and my only live experience was at that other shit I mentioned earlier. I had the honor of meeting the guys prior to the show for my interview, and I say this only out of admiration, not to brag, they were one of the nicest bands I have ever met. And their set matched that same approach, fun and good times.

They blasted off right away into material from their latest, and in my opinion greatest album Resolve. "Heartbreaking Music" and "Automatic" got the crowd into a frenzy. Other highlights included the always popular "May 16," "Violins," "Razor Burn" and "Alien 8." I particularly enjoyed Joey's creative use of a megaphone during "Runs in the Family."

To be honest, I don't remember every little detail about every set. I watched a lot of it sidestage, taking pictures and getting video, and mainly just rocking out to three amazing bands. Some of you may say "what the fuck is the point of this review?" Who knows, maybe one kid out there will read this and check the tour out, purely out of curiosity. I highly encourage you to do so. You're not gonna find a better lineup during the summer, or for that matter, any time of the year.

i wish I could have gone to a show off this tour, seeing as A Wilhelm Scream are just about my 2nd favorite band off ALL time, The Lawrence Arms are definitely up there as well, and Lagwagon, although I never got huge into them were alway a great band and remains so today.

    CAN't WAIT!!!

Punk rock is not dead! I will be there on the 11th in Vegas (also my birthday) and I will be drunk!!

I have not been this excited for a show in the greater part of a decade. I feel like I almost don't deserve to see these 3 amazing bands all on the same bill.

I agree completely with this review.
I saw this show in Minneapolis and for fucks sake...This tour was better than Warped.

Yeah, sorry about that. I've had kind of a bad/boring evening, so writing became suddenly very fun, and I went with it.

Also, I took offense to being even slightly misunderstood as "soft on rape". You understand.

Posted by sickboi on 2006-08-06 02:32:37

Godfather....if you were by the bar, I was the guy in the black Strike Anywhere shirt that kept coming up to the end of it ordering. I was sidestage most of the time, but would run onstage every now and then for pic's and video. I also went into the crowd during TLA, and filmed "Your Gravest Words" from the front left of the crowd.

    Cool yer jets, bruther.

I wasn't commenting about what happened at the university. Really, I'm indifferent to that. I'd be pissed is some morons drunk fucked in my communal showers, IMO they should have both been kicked out.

I was commenting about what you said about America's views on rape, it seemed like you said they unfairly favored women, which just isn't true.

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-08-06 01:09:26

And everything you say is spoken like someone who never went to college (This is not a quote directed at your age. I'm referring to the incredibly uber-liberal, to the point that it irritates normal liberals, atmosphere of most colleges. It's something people rarely are exposed to outside of it. Even if you work for extreme activist organizations, there isn't much that compares to the type of lunacy you'll find in America's higher education facilities.).

Everything I typed is the exact rundown of what went on. These two people engaged in consensual sex, and the guy got expelled for date rape, and ended up KILLING HIMSELF. So don't be a douchebag, Will. I don't have to know a rape victim to know how they feel. I can imagine. And knowing a rape victim wouldn't change this case.
He got a lifelong (though that life didn't last much longer) assocation with being a rapist. As I said, clear as day, this was not a case of a guy getting a girl drunk and taking advantage of her. They were both sober enough to stand up and have sex in a dorm shower (and that's pretty sober, as standing sex can be pretty hard to maneuver). They were both drunk. What is it in our society that says the male is always the aggressor? If they were both intoxicated, why is he a rapist and she a victim? How come we don't see it as her raping him, because that does happen.
Is it the age-old stereotype that all men are perverts and all women are sexless victims?
Remember, she never made a claim against him. She never claimed to be violated. The school found out and did all of this themselves. This is the same school that arrested the guy with the "This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb" sticker on his bike.
All I'm saying is that, until crap like this stops, real rape cases won't be taken as seriously as they should be.

Bottom line, how would you like to wake up one morning, after having drunken sex, and find yourself expelled from school and branded a rapist forever? Especially if the girl wasn't the one calling you a rapist?

My point wasn't that I won't ever believe a rape claim. But when it's a university calling something date rape, I will always want to know the details before I pass judgment because of the aforementioned case. That doesn't mean I won't call a rape a rape, because that would be idiotic, but I won't call something rape when I don't know anything about it, either. It's the same thing as when a junior high school teacher gets accused of sexually harrassing students. Even if it isn't true, usually that teacher can't get work as a teacher anymore because the accusations last longer than the truth.

I agree with everything else you said. The problem is that America instills a sense of male dominance that allows for some rape to be justified, but it also believes in that male dominance to a point that, if there's any alcohol involved, the sex is deemed nonconsensual, and the man is the one who the assault charges are levelled at. There are posters on college campuses that say that if a girl is drunk, she cannot legally give consent for sex. All well and good, but what happens when both the guy and girl are drunk? Neither of them are legally expected to be in the mindset to ask for or give consent. But if they have sex, somehow it was the man's responsibility and his alone to make sure they both wanted it to happen. I am not talking about instances in which a real rape occurred or the man was aggressive. I mean the cases where, sans alcohol, the sex would've been consensual. What do you do in that grey area? Do you call the man a rapist, the woman a victim and walk away, washing your hands of it all?

"2-I went to Ohio University. Once there, a guy and a girl went (just friends) went out for her 21st birthday. They both got drunk and had sex in a dorm shower. He was expelled for date rape, and ended up suing the school because a teacher called him a predator in the paper. The girl, however, was treated like a victim. Also, she didn't even say the guy raped her. She didn't claim to be a victim. As horrible a crime as rape is, this society likes to dilute that by calling two people having drunken sex the same as that guy raping the girl. So until I saw court records describing exactly what happened, I wouldn't believe it anyway."

Spoken like someone who has never known a rape a victim. Countless rapists are never served justice because America's instilled sexism usually makes them the hardest cases to prosecute. All defense attorneys have to do is show that the female has a "history of wreckless sexual conduct," which translates into "slut got what she asked for."

This society reinforces a sense of male dominance and entitlement that allows for rape to be justified. Sickening, really.

i saw this show when it was in montreal, and it was on a sunday night.

i dunno... i love wilhelm scream and the larry arms but i lagwagon was really just meh. i guess the problem is that i never got into them as a kid, cause to me now they just sounded like generic 90s pop/skate/punk.

I'll be going to this show in Santa Cruz on the 14th, so if you're there come up and say hi. I'll bring a bag of promo CDs to give to people.

In exchange, you have to post about how awesome I am.

Saw this show here in orlando last night! Oddly, the band I was looking most forward to seeing (Lawrence Arms) played my least favorite set of the night (a little to "Oh Calcutta" heavy). I hadn't seen lagwagon since the 1997 warped tour, but they were really good, I was never a huge lagwagon fan in the past, but I'm starting to enjoy them alot more than I used to, Joey's voice just took some getting used to for me (about ten years of getting used to, I guess.

Alright, this whole story honestly perturbed me as i couldnt believe brendan would do a thing, but hell you never know. after about an hour of internet searching/researching (while gettin' paid!) i am 97% sure that this whole incident is bs. this band Showoff is full of sexist assholes who got called out by brendan years ago. apparently they were jokingly telling a crowd to 'rape' a girl. later brendan onstage called them out on it and they wrote this song called 'anti-song' which sarcastically says that if something is to be 'punk' it has to be approved by brendan. they say fuck being pc and if you look around they love to call girls dumb sluts. and also i couldnt find shit relating to any date rape stuff at northern illinois (im not fucking paying to acces court documents). and if there was an incident in the last ten years it would be somewhere concidering how low date rape and convictions of such are looked at by the media. so basically showoff (what a goddamn awful band name) is pissed that brendan called them out onstage and their fans and them have perpetuated this slanderous rumor. i think at the first falcon show they should be led onstage and pelted with shit. and believe you me, there will be falcon shows....plus lets be honest, if anyone was going to pull a date rape incident it obviously would have been neil. captain hennessy. score is for the 'Arms

"Actually if YOU knew anything about guitars you'd know that only guitars with a floating bridge such as a Floyd Rose that is not blocked off actually go out of tune when a string breaks, and that you almost never see a punk band play a guitar with this kind of bridge because a) it's only useful if you use a whammy bar, and b) it sounds terrible when a string breaks!

MOST guitars and nearly all that any punk guitarist will use have a tune-o-matic bridge that does not go out of tune when a string breaks."

You must be one of those geeks who hangs around guitar stores talking about, aargh, "specs" and serial numbers and such.

So you can BLOW ME as well.

    Rise to my bait, kiddies.

Brandon is an asshole. His head is way to big. Lets not forget he rapes young girls. Thats a fact its in the chicago police department. Look it up. Its what broke the broadways up!

I don't see why the reviewer thought that playing with a broken string was a sign of "professionalism." When a string breaks, the whole guitar immediately goes out of tune and sounds like shit. Of course, music doesn't matter if it's punk, right? Actually, I'm betting that the reviewer wasn't smart enough to know how bad that sounded.

Not to mention it does take some level of professionalism and experience to be able to finish out a song with a broken string, which you'd also know if you had ever had to do so yourself.

    this show was amazing

probably the best one i've been too all year

Lagwagon was like 100x better than the last time i saw them, and the Lawrence Arms set was definitely better than when they came with NOFX

    "Reviewer dude..

Were you the one with Smith/Ryan/DrunkOffHisAssDude that went to Philly too?"

that guy couldnt stand straight and spilled beer all over my nofx shirt,

He said he was pretty ripped, but he didn't seem that bad to me. You should have seen when we were interviewing, Joey kept fucking with him, it was hilarious.

I mean getting to a point that wasn't so dependent on the guitar, where Brendan can carry the load on bass. They are a 3 piece, and they are certain parts in every song where it will sound like COMPLETE ass without a guitar, and other parts where you can just do a little improv bass solo.

How do you mean, about transitioning the song?

I think this show would have received a perfect score if Lagwagon had played "Bombs Away". Best Lagwagon song, ever.

Catching this show tonight in Ft. Lauderdale. Never really listened to Lagwagon, am going for the Larry Arms and AWS. That said, your comment about great club packages during the summer was spot-on.

Great review ... the lack of fanboy-emphasis on uber-complete setlists was refreshing.

I thought the "cream themselves over them" links were funny. Unfortunately, I missed this tour because I just couldn't make it to Detroit.

Also, they played "Your GRavest Words" in Chicago, if I recall correctly, so it's apparently on their set for this tour.

I checked this tour out in Toronto, and it was a really good show. I admit, I haven't listened to Lagwagon in eons, but it was nice to have fun again. Older crowd, must have been 90% 19 , I reccommend checking out this tour.
