Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

I am officially giving up on trying to keep track of all the pop-rock bands saturating the underground.

Now, Lucky Boys Confusion has been around a little bit longer than most, and subsequently what you would expect is a maturation and expansion of their previous sound. Instead, what’s been found is a regression. Rather than continue to incorporate some of the reggae elements that were found in previous efforts, the band has decided to go the way of the token pop-rock band.

Granted, the sound is a cohesive one, putting them a foot or two above other like-minded bands, but the fact of the matter is that the songs on How to Get Out Alive just are not all that good.

What it boils down to is a very simple oversight -- the choruses are great, and the verses are not. This is problematic for a few obvious reasons. The first being, that in a given song, the verses take up a lot more time than the choruses do, and the second being, the band is incapable of writing a full song worth listening to. The songs themselves do flow from one to another in that cohesive manner I mentioned before, but each track leaves plenty to be desired. “Cigarettes” is the one exception to this rule, as a song that has some pretty solid verses to accompany the chorus. Why is that the only song of the five where this is true, though? Obviously it’s in the bands capacity to write a song that’s listenable.

In effect, what we have here is a band who’s underachieving. They have the ability to write some catchy tunes, but seem to get too wrapped up in writing a memorable chorus, and not as wrapped up in the verses leading to it.

The saddest thing in life -- is wasted talent.

The saddest thing is a little girl who is told by her own mother and father that she will never be pretty.

And then they open the front door, and on the porch is a little white suitcase, with all of her things in it.

"LBC sucks and so does rich, uppety, Caribou Coffee drinking, uneducated partygirl swooning - West suburban Chicagoland."

Yes, but not people who have internet access and the time to waste arguing about guttermouth on the internet.

If you seriously believe Guttermouth is better than The Deftones, you need to get your head examined.

Hell, even Korn is more worthwhile than that shit.

Guttermouth is a punk rock band. Not everyone is wired to tolerate that kind of stuff. I however am.

Deftones are Korn for people who don't want to admit to liking Korn.

LBC sucks and so does rich, uppety, Caribou Coffee drinking, uneducated partygirl swooning - West suburban Chicagoland.

Anchors, I've been waiting 14 months to get mine published.

Again I agree w/ Scruffy. I like him / her.

damn I didn't realize a seven was that many stars.

Three stars. Average but still enjoyable.

    My Score:

I thought it was good effort. At first I wasn't so sure if I liked it but grew on me a lot. I agree the focus on the choruses can be a little much but I think it deserves a little better of a score.

    Guys, guys. Let's not fight.

The Deftones, Guttermouth AND Lucky Boys Confusion ALL suck.

    "The Deftones are fucking terrible."

Yet you like Guttermouth and these turds?

*sorry...I need to clear my throat*

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Yeah, I've had a fair share of reviews not get pubkished. It's kind of disconcerting and definitely discourages me from taking the time to write them in the future.

    Posted by feeeding5000 on 2006-10-17 16:39:11

My reviews don't usually get posted because I write long-winded stories that have little to do with the review, and then I write maybe 4 sentences about the album. If they do get posted, it's b/c I don't review emo or 'Orgcore, which sets me apart from everyone else.

    The Deftones are fucking terrible.

And I really like LBC, though I admit I was disappointed at the lack of ska on this EP.

No matter the copious amount of weed Dusticles smokes, it still doesn't make this shit listenable.

    never smoked in my life.

    deftones suck.

    My Score:

    amazing band, pretty good e.p.

the struggle and cigarettes are 2 of the better songs they've written, both have interesting bridges, outro's, little touches here and there that go way beyond the effort of most pop/punk bands. but the other 2 original songs on here are average at best, the only thing that separates them from the rest of the bands out htere is the lead singers voice, which is much more full and has a much greater range than your typical 'punchline' or other shitty pop/punk band.

cigaretes is probaby the catchiest song no ones heard all year. if that song was on the radio they'd be the next fall out boy...or at least the next plain white t's. but better, cuz these dudes are in their late 20's and have much more of a mature sound and a better grasp of songwriting than your typical early 20's band. they've been together since highschool, 10 years, 3 albums and 2 e.p's for those of you that don't know.

It still astounds me that I write 500 word reviews that never get published, RE: The Briggs, Lemuria/Kind of Like Spitting, Refugee Allstars, and more.

    A couple things;

    1) I know nothing of your writing skill or style, but just because it's 500 words doesn't mean it's written well.

    2) We get tons, and tons, and tons of reviews submitted to us. As you can see, only 20 per week are posted -- be patient. I waited over three months to get my first review posted.

Oh, did I mention these potheads are on tour with BOWLING FOR SOUP!!

I guess DV8 had to take their Social Studies test, so they convinced Lucky Boys Confusion to join after giving them some dope and a bag of Funyuns.

In more important news, I'm enjoying the new Deftones.

    Wayyy better than Minerva.

One time I saw these guys and fell asleep.

    Seriously.

Posted by dusticles on 2006-10-17 00:59:50

The last track, a cover of the song anything, anything is really sweet.

I grew up loving this band and I even found this a weak effort. But Colin You're right, Throwing The Game is an exelent listen

Posted by ilikepunkrock on 2006-10-17 00:57:49

It really does suck not getting reviews posted, I've only wrote a few live reviews and a review of a CD not from 2006 but I thought they were decent.

i gotta say their album "throwing the game" is a fucking diamond in the rough of pop punk. it still astounds me that album did not get these guys huge.
