Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)

Has it really been two years since Hot Fuss came out? The Killers enjoyed success in the form of their three big singles: "Somebody Told Me," "Mr. Brightside," and "All These Things That I've Done." Interest seemed to fade in the band though, as is often the case, so Sam's Town hasn't made quite the splash the band anticipated (Flowers: "This album is one of the best albums in the past 20 years. There's nothing that touches this album").

Sam's Town opens with its title track, and immediately sets forth the theme of the album: Our narrator desperately wants to leave his tired home and start his new life. The tension between the overwhelming emptiness of the town and the sincere hope for something better is recurrent throughout the songs, and is best explained by standout track "This River Is Wild:"

This town was meant for passing through, boy, it ain't nothing new. Now go and show 'em that the world stayed round. [...] Or should I just get along with myself? I never did get along with everybody else. I've been trying hard to do what's right. [...] Well, this river is wild.
"Enterlude," a 49-second introduction to the album, follows "Sam's Town" and breaks the fourth wall as Flowers and a piano welcome the listener, and informs him that "It's good to have you with us, even if it's just for the day." Appropriately, Sam's Town is closed with "Exitlude" ("we hope you enjoyed your stay").

The band has certainly expanded their sound on their new full-length -- for the most adventurous example, see "Bones." The song opens with a grandiose choir and features blazing horns. Flowers' vocals are dubbed over a monotone reading of the lyrics in "For Reasons Unknown," and I'm fairly certain that's a glockenspiel in "Why Do I Keep Counting?." And while there is still plenty of synthesizer to maintain an atmosphere or to carry the melody (most notably in current single, "When You Were Young"), Sam's Town features some noteworthy piano.

Despite this willingness to experiment, the band is still rooted in the revival of popular new-wave of the 1980s. Fortunately, all of the aspects of `80s hits I hate aren't present here; in place of any drum machine, the production on the percussion is clear and well-suited to the songs. Bass lines are interesting and attention-catching (see: "Uncle Jonny," "This River Is Wild"). Finally, Flowers' singing is clear and strong. Even the band's most dedicated opponents have to acknowledge the talent of the vocals here.

There are, of course, minor faults. "Enterlude" and "Exitlude" are unnecessary and serve as a distraction. Adding a theatrical element has worked for other bands, but here the album's bookends interrupt the confessional tone of many of the songs. There are moments when the background vocals seem pointless and annoying. And while Hot Fuss saw comically awful lyrics in "Somebody Told Me," on Sam's Town they are found not, surprisingly, in "Bling (Confessions of a King)," but in "Uncle Jonny:" "When everybody else refrained."

If you didn't like Hot Fuss, you're going to hate this. If, however, you enjoyed the Killers' first release, I'm willing to bet that you'll like Sam's Town. I've taken off a point for the missteps listed above, and another point for Flowers' absolutely ridiculous ego concerning the album.

the cd has really grown on me

Like I said at the beginning of this post last Friday, Cardinals in five. I should have put money down.

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-10-25 12:29:14

P.S. Across Five Aprils latest full length Collapse is pretty kick ass, but nowhere near as good as Living in the Moment. They got a new vocalist who can't sing as well and there's more shouting, but it's a fun listen, kind of generic.

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-10-25 12:27:55

The problem I see is that there are decent groups out there which haven't been getting a review and SHOULD have gotten one. I'm primarily thinking of A5A (across five aprils), Remembering Never, These Arms Are Snakes (last album came out a week ago, though), My Dying Bride's newest album isn't even mentionned anywhere out here, and the list goes on and on.

Dude, the last three full lengths by Remembering Never have been reviewed. I even reviewed God Dave Us back in the spring.

I don't know what to think of this band. Brandon Flowers is kind've an idiot, but I really like their singles, and a few of their other songs. First band in a while where I've liked what they had on the radio. Most of their other songs kinda suck.

"You're an idiot. Any press doesn't equal success, but it ALWAYS equals more recognition. Even if Gigli bombed at the box office, it earned more many than it would have it there hadn't been any press at all."

You dumbass, the person implied that press automatically equals money. If there had been less bad hype surrounding that movie, it would have likely raked in a ton more. It's implied that a lot of this mainstream stuff will receive press, but bad press can ruin an album's reputation.

Yes, we could all go out and write our own reviews, but that wouldn't stop this review from being posted. The issue isn't that this is a bad review, but that it doesn't belong on this site. Complaining about is the best way to show that we consider punknews better than this crap, and that we don't want it here.

Of course! This statement is entirely logical! Bad press = money spent. I mean, that's why Gigli, that shitty Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck movie, made so much money... right?

Instead of complaining about what reviews are being posted, why don't you write and submit your own? What makes this site so great is that it's a community effort, users can submit their own reviews and news articles. If you disagree with a review then you can make a comment or write another one. To my knowledge, all the editors on this site have jobs and lives and don't have the time to review every release that comes out. If you really want to see something reviewed, do it yourself. Complaining about this site seems like the least constructive thing you could do. Yet, here I am, complaining about people complaining. Oh well.

Archangel - despite all these comments, I happen to think your review was pretty decent. You have a right to your opinion no matter what some of these posters will tell you, and although I wouldn't have given this album quite as high a score, I do enjoy it on a shallow level. You're right, enterlude and exitlude should not be there, and Flowers is a dick.

Anyone claiming to be 'looking for a new reviews site'... I'd say go ahead and leave. But then again, you're probably checking back here every couple hours to see if anyone has responded to your posts. And as long as the 'org keeps posting reviews on great bands that aren't so punk (mountain goats for example) I think they have every right to post something of this nature. Whew... havent made a comment this long in probably a year.

as it is certainly not the most important album to be released in the punk world this week.

Considering it wasn't released this week, you're dead on.

"wrong. I got my letter published in the one with the Underoath cover about a year ago calling out AP for not including social D-live at the roxy in the '10 essential live albums' feature and they printed it."

Was Bad Religion's Tested included? Because that's the best live album ever, simply because of how and why they did it, not to mention it's freaking rad quality-wise. Also, the legion of Germans singing the slow intro to Generator is fantastic.
Pretty much, I just want everyone to seek out Tested. But you've got to read the booklet to really see what makes it so good.

    1. Music shouldn't be divided into "serious," and "fun." Sure, maybe this music is fun, but Jawbreaker is fun, too. The Lawrence Arms are fun too. None More Black is fun. But all those bands take their music seriously. Honestly good music is both serious and fun.

    2. "As long as a review of The Killers new album doesn't take the place of "punk" band reviews, and is only in-addition-to...Then why is it such a big deal if it's on here?"

I don't know if no one submitted a Lillingtons review, but it's a big enough release to warrant an editor writing one, and given the close relationship between Punknews and Red Scare, it seems unlikely that nobody here received a promo copy. Yet we have a Killers review instead of a Lillingtons review.

Also, if people want to like the Killers, fine, but they in no way belong on a punk site. They're aping bands that were aping bands that were only marginally related to punk in the first place. They didn't come out of the punk scene, they don't play punk, you can't make a claim for their ethics, nothing about them is here. Even if you want to stretch the definition to the breaking point to allow them to be here, it certainly shouldn't be the top review, as it is certainly not the most important album to be released in the punk world this week.

    1. I like the Killers. I don't think there is a problem with liking any band (sans Nickleback) as long as you understand the context they are in. I don't think The Killers are ground-breaking, or musical geniuses or a "great band." I don't deny Brandon Flowers is probably a pompous ass. I simply am entertained when I listen to them. People need to get over the musical elitism. Listen to different music for different reasons, and when you simply don't like a band, recognize that you simply don't like them.

    2. As long as a review of The Killers new album doesn't take the place of "punk" band reviews, and is only in-addition-to...Then why is it such a big deal if it's on here? Skip over it and read the reviews/news/info that you want.

    3. AP really does need to do away with the actor profiles. Stop covering the teeny-bopper actors and fill the space with music information....Or cut the pages and cut back on costs. I know it's about selling issues, but does anyone really pick up AP because of the actor profiles?

"Please let's keep this shit off of this website. It's not close-mindedness when you've been around awhile. The review is weak and has a shows a very superficial understanding of music and art (paraphrase= "It's like 80s but not cheesy!"). Like it or not, this site is for the readers not the writers. AP writes for its demographic. Now the demographic for this site is speaking out against what it doesn't want. You cannot call it close-mindedness. 99% of the people here who are into the underground are not just into it to be cool, it's actually their passion."

I totally agree with you plasticspastic. The entire reason i joined up here and visit it as often as i do is to find new "underground" artists to check ou because i cannot find that kind of information just by watching MTV.

C'mon man, have a sense of humor. The Hives wear matching suits on stage, claim that their whole band was engineered and every song is written by a reclusive svengli (Randy Fitzsimmons) and their bass player looks like a child molester and his name is DR. MATT DESTRUCTION. Their whole deal is like performance art with some really great, simple punk songs.

The Hives will do many things, but never will they try to pass off warmed-over Duran Duran meets the Boss as the greatest record of the last 20. Nor, I might add, do you see Pelle talking shit about every punk band in NME every week.

I'm fairly certain he's a huge tosser too.

To be honest, most of the people making claims that theirs is the best band/album ever are complete wankers who should be neutred. Brandon Flowers? Shouting Pete? That fucktard from Rasorlight who thinks he's better than Bob Dylan? All jokes. One extended marketing gimmick.

I think it's fairly safe to say that when someone mkaes such ridiculous, grandiose claims, you could probably wipe your ass with them.

and I agree, so they don't put the Falcon on the cover, they still gave them a 1/2 page review and a mini Brenden interview.

and I'll admit, the first time I ever heard of brand new was in AP, probably late 2001 or early 2002 when they did an article on the 'future' of post hardcore or something and it featured finch, sparta, brand new and such, before anyone really knew who finch or brand new were.

danperrone, Flowers has gone on record saying that this album is an homage, and attempted recreation of the Springsteen thang.

Even if you don't hear it in the music, read the lyrics.

The feel of the album. The concept of the album. The overblown hype and pride in the artists' work.

    Sooooo Springsteen.

Sooooooo Born To Run. Ya know, how The Boss set out to make the greatest most over the top rock and roll album ever? And yes he has gone on record saying That, too.

Kinda like the the whole "greatest album in the past twenty years " thing that Flowers keeps going on about.

And yes I'm too lazy to find the quotes, you don;'t believe it, you do the research.

While I do not care much for this band, there is one I can not help but think of when it comes to bands I simply detest. FRANZ FERDINAND. They are horrible. Those idiots don't even know that there are notes aside from quarter and eighth notes. They are predictable. I am perplexed by people who like them. ALL THEY PLAY IS DAM EIGHTH NOTES, AND IT’S REALLY BORING. As well, they just play the dam chorus over and over. Just venting my hatred for this band, I just herd a song of threes for the first time and listened to the whole thing because it was just that bad right before I posted this.

"Punk" is dead. Who the fuck cares?

people have been saying that for 20 years now, and yet the massive underground culture that existed when "punk" (a term describing the music by the media when it first came out) first came alive is still very much vibrant... so, sure, punk may be dead in the sense that there are many terrible spin-offs of it, but after going to a show recently and seeing so many kids going ape shit over a band like strike anywhere... its hard to say punk is dead

I think this site is amazing, the only problem is the damn reviews lately. The ratio of punk/hardcore/poppunk/powerpo to emo/indie/phychrock/screamo/MTVmusic is like 50/50. That just isn't how it should be at punknews.org

See...excluding music can be fun. Look at absolutepunk -- they put reviews of rap and pop on there, and no punk. It's a slippery slope people. With punk, you can either drift totally to metal, like Boston 1986, or into indie rock, like DC 1985.

The fact of the matter is, this is not punk AND it sucks. Sure i'm all for nonpunk bands being reviewed here, but this is garbage.

We could have a loose affiliation w/punknews -- we could publish the Tragedy reviews and Kegcharge tour schedule, and you could cover the pop-punk, emo, and "'Orgcore".

Pretty much everyone here has a warped definition of what mainstream is.

    The Killers = mainstream.
    U2 = mainstream.
    Coldplay = mainstream.
    Nickelback = mainstream.

Compared to some of our recent covers:
    Rise Against = niche audience.
    Head Automatica = niche audience.
    Underoath = niche audience.

to say that those three bands are "mainstream pap" is ignorant. Just because they have a bigger reach than, say, the Lawrence Arms, doesn't mean they're on TRL.

Paul: I was recently promoted to music editor, and 221 is my first issue -- let me know if you still think things are too highly rated then, so I can do something about it. Also, the 1-5 scale is on its way out; we're changing it in 2007.

    This Killers record still sucks.

AP is a pretty much a rag. The bands they choose to put on the cover are of the pretty shallow, bottom feeder variety. And as someone else said earlier, don't espouse your magazine as being some sort of "Alternative Press" when you sell that same mainstream pap everyone else does. It's pretty disgusting.

AP is a commercial entity. Its exists to make money for its employees and its advertisers. Thus, they're going to put Head Automatica on the cover and not the Street Dogs. Reading about Cursive or getting on oral history on Gorilla Biscuits is nice (yes, I bought the September issue for that reason), but never forget that it is a magazine, and its whole purpose is to sell you something.

Finally, someone who understands my point. To comment on the media, I'd say you have to actually know something about the media. It's not hard to comprehend.

Comparing Punknews to AP is like comparing apples to orangutans. Punknews is a fan site, by and for the kids. The whole reason (in my opinion) for it being here is to read about bands you like and find out about new bands. I'm not sure how the Killers fit into either category. Scott makes a good point.

    My Score:

The Killers are a bigger scourge of modern "alternative" music than any emo band out there. They're utterly repulsive, and not just because Brandon Flowers is a pompous, arrogant cunt, but because they embody the very definition of celebrating... not even mediocrity. They embody celebrating music for profit's sake, for getting laid, for looking cool, style over substance and cynical manipulation of the market.

There is no art involved in their cynical rip-off shit. They are hands down one of the worst bands ever. And I say that without hyperbole. What's betting their next album will ape hair metal?

I bet you a million of your American dollars that all of The Killers would willingly get down on their hands and knees and suck Ronald Raegan and Margaret Thatcher's cocks and gulp down the milky goodness, because they're so much throwbacks that they don't just rip off the worst aspects of mainstream rock at the end of the 80s, but they rip off the values that led to it. This is Duran Duran partying on disgustingly opulent yachts with loads of different and alluringly-named strippers, whilst simultaneously snorting coke out of each other's ass-holes and giving each other hearty pats on the backs whilst they're at it. Only worse, because like everything else these guys shit out, it's all been done before. Only better.

Fuck The Killers. They're a fucking atrocity.

I'd like to add that I enjoy alternative press, I think overall its a great magazine, theres always a few articles in it that are well written, like the Rise Against article this month, or the oral history of HWM. The oral history of Saves the Day was great, I've read interviews with Joey Cape and Brenden Kelly in there, recent features have covered less than jake, the bouncing souls etc. I skip over the fluff bands, as long as they cover enough bands I dig, I'll keep my subscription (which I've had for 6 years now)

I just took a shot at Scott because I think he was the pot calling the kettle black, being that AP gives garbage like cobra starship and hellogoodbye 5/5 (and I swear 6 years ago when I first got the mag it was a lot harder for bands to get perfect scores, now they hand out 6 or 7 5/5 reviews every issue. It also used to be on a 10 scale, which left a lot more room for marginal calls.

I call semi-bullshit on that. A month or two ago I was sitting next to someone on a charter bus going home for the weekend and I noticed she was reading a copy of AP.

I couldn't help but glance over and see what she was reading in there... after a while I noticed she was only reading it for the articles on bands like Panic At The Disco, Fall Boy Out and shit like that.. Anytime there'd be a moment where AP was covering a good band that just happened to be "less mainstream" she would skip the article.

I'm sure there are some people out there that read the articles of bands they've never heard of before and get into them but I'm willing to bet that a good majority just skip the article never to read or care about those bands.

I'm glad though that Scott said they're going to do a history on Naked Raygun, the sad thing is I'm sure a majority of AP's young readers are just going to skip that article for the inside scoop on My Chemical Romance's new offering of musical poop.

Oh yeah and speaking of poop, people who like the Killers eat their own feces.

so punknews is supposed to review nothing but 5 star albums? Go back to pitchfork, jerkoff.

Stop reading between the lines when you shouldn't. I meant that they reviewed two mediocre albums which EVERYONE knew they were going to be and they were also from very small bands. There are a lot of good albums out there or even decent which bring new stuff to the table which aren't even getting reviewed.

Honestly, I care more about CD reviews than I care about live band reviews. What I do like is that they do review albums from mostly underground or badly known bands.

This site is awesome, it made me know a LOT of bands I would've never even heard of (I'm thinking: Envy, Jesu, RX Bandits, The Ghost, etc.) that I highly enjoy. I thank punknews.org for that.

They do a really good job, but it'd be even better if they could change their mentality a little when it comes to reviewing albums. I'm unsure if they get paid to review certain albums over others or what, but we're certainly missing on a lot of great stuff when some Live! or music entirely too poppy to be written reviews for.

That's all I meant by that other post. Some of the spots which were taken by those bands could've been used for promotion for -good- underground or lesser known bands.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, October 20, 2006 at 12:14 PM (EDT)

i hope this gets posted on their message boards so a bunch of 13 year olds will get linked to the site and start calling the killers "punk."

    Posted by feeeding5000 on 2006-10-20 12:12:34

See, I'll write long, tangential reviews about relatively obscure crust albums, and they won't get posted. Then, when someone writes a review that guarantees the site will get hits (and ad revenue) it's put up in the first spot. Hmmm....

if you are going to call it "alternative press" though, maybe you SHOULDN'T put pop bands on the covers, write about strictly mainstream tv shows and movies, etc. would it be okay for a magazine called "hip hop montly" to put taylor hicks on the cover because it will sell to young stupid kids?

    My Score:

While yes, this band is a joke, and Scott's comment was funny due to irony, I don't think pointing out scores in a magazine can really qualify as a valid point, and the same goes for the featured artists in AP.

Scott is not the only person that works at AP, and I'm sure that when reviews come in, albums that need to be reviewed go to people who ENJOY that genre of music, otherwise it would be a total crapshoot and make no sense whatsoever. Granted, this doesn't really defend his attack on 'quality control', but it was a pretty brash comment to make in the first place.

Ex: If I was given an At The Drive-In album, particularly the much-lauded "Relationship of Command", I can honestly say I'd give it a 3 out of 5. And that's only because of their abilities. Because guess what? I don't like fucking prog, and I never will.

And about those bands that are featured on AP's covers...yeah, it's pretty bad a lot of times, but you have to sell magazines somehow, right? When everyone else is peddling those bullshit artists like Hawthorne Heights and have them on their covers, no one is going to pick up AP if they're featuring some band that no young teenage kid has been exposed to like Lifetime.

AP has to compete, and so they do by doing articles on popular bands. But guess what? They also do big articles on GOOD bands. This month? The Oral Histroy of Hot Water Music. Damn fine feature.

"Still young but no longer impressionable."

Please let's keep this shit off of this website. 99% of the people here who are into the underground are not just into it to be cool, it's actually their passion.

Some people are annoyed with the asshole-ness of this site, but read some reviews from a few years ago and see how much better the majority of them are written now, mostly because of reader response.

My clicks help fund the advertising and I don't want to see any more 4 star Killers reviews on here unless it's April 1st. Don't tell me I'm close-minded if I don't like one of the biggest bands in modern rock.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, October 20, 2006 at 9:28 AM (EDT)

I find it funny that our culture is obsessed with conformity, following trends, and glorifying celebrities, rock stars, athletes...YET our culture is also obsessed with giving shit to anyone that's really popular - ie. popular bands/singers, athletes who make big money (arod), and big name celebrities. I'm not saying these people don't deserve to get shit - god knows paris hilton and n'sync and terrell owens deserve it - but its just funny to me how we worship these people overall.

Personally I think the Killers make pretty good music. Yes they're more popular than they deserve and Brandon Flowers seems like a douche, but they seem to really be trying to do something a little different with sam's town, while sticking to what made them popular in the first place. I give them credit for that.

Punknews should seriously considered redirecting its course to a more underground-oriented direction. Don't get me wrong, the streams available are often of groups I would never listen to otherwise and the "Band Of The Moment" often bring up new and interesting groups. But when the band that, to me, is the definition of "Mainstream" is the FIRST posted topic, it really draws concern. Anyone else?

I casually took a visit to Alt Press's site, and here are some of the scores I found:

    From First to Last: 4/5
    Hellogoodbye: 5/5
    Taking Back Sunday: 4/5
    Thursday's new album a 5/5?

Recent covers feature AFI, Hawthorne Heights, Avenged Sevenfold, Head Automatica, and underoath.

You can talk about "quality control" when you stop blowing smoke up the ass of any douchebag whose big single involves the lines, "So cut my wrists and black my eyes." I'm ready to take shit from the rest of this site's commenting audience, but not from someone who peddles artists committing the same crime he condemns to the 15-year-old girls who love the Killers as well as your Hot Topic-friendly clusterfuck of a tabloid.

    My Score:

You gotta be fucking kidding me. Just because someone wrote a Killers review doesn't mean you have to run it, especially when it flies in the face of virtually every real review of this record out there -- it's a stinker, plain and simple.

Is quality control too much to ask around here anymore?

High marks for albums like this are what make the reviews section of this site almost entirely unreliable.

    My Score:

hott fuss was a great record and musicly broke the mold for other english rock bands! give em a break, you people are so into the fact that the bands you listen to can't be popular! stop being followers and stand up for what you really like and be proud of being yourself, insted of trying to look cool on some bullshit website! the new album just didn't have the same feel to the first but still had some good material!

God, those singles annoyed the living fuck out of me... I'm not even going to listen to this. Score is for being closed-minded.

i hate this band. why is this even here? what is this? trendynews.org?

I honestly gave Hott Fuss a chance and borrowed my little sisters copy one day before class and I can safely say the singles were catchy but the album got really boring. I should hope this really important album he claims this to be is slightly better.

Score's for the singer's pedophile mustache. Time to hit up the play ground buddy.

hot fuss was pretty bad and the lead singer is totally full of himself and doesn't have the talent to back it, so this can easily be on my 'next please' list.

*superior pitching AND a more consistant line up

    "Cardinals in five."

the cardinals will be lucky if it goes five. the tigers have superior pitching a more consistent line up. edmonds isn't producing for the cardinals and rolen's shoulder is in such tough shape im amazed he can pick up a bat
