Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

I really didn't want to review this album because I've reviewed a lot of records this year that I have given pretty high scores to. And that's a good sign; I generally try to be an objective reviewer, and I'll be the first to say that 2006 has been one of my personal favorite years of music in a very long time. And every record I've loved has been for specific reasons pertaining to the band, whether it has been a strong comeback (Thursday, BoySetsFire), an enjoyable drinking album (the Falcon, Saves the Day), or just front-to-back good listens (Life at These Speeds, the Blood Brothers).

However, this is the first record I've heard this year that spans near perfect, beginning to end, through just about every category imaginable. This is record-of-the-year potential. Personally, I wasn't sure how Planes Mistaken for Stars would best the triumph that was Up in Them Guts. However, Mercy is an unrelenting punch. It's a truck that keeps running you over, a gun that keeps shooting you -- it's the record that tears your guts out and makes you ask for more. It's depraved, violent, nasty, heavy, and if music had a color it would be pitch black with the slightest hint of deep grey lurking around the edges.

One thing Planes' albums have always been is oddly produced, vocals obscured by an array of repetitive guitars and an onslaught of drums. This album, for once, has brought the band's sound to a plateau. The tension is equal to the Fuck with Fire days, while maintaining the heavy sound Up in Them Guts held so well.

Every second on this record sounds like the end of the world, as if it was one last catharsis before the earth broke in two and all life was lost. From the culmination of the introductory "One Fucked Pony" to the end of the depraved and despair-filled acoustic "Penitence," this album makes you hate just about everything about existence. Planes Mistaken for Stars has never been a happy band, a band that makes you feel good about much at all, and that depression hits just as hard on Mercy. The politically accosting, "Church Date" reads:

Son of a bitch, it seems that we've been tricked. / Our heroes were whores and our martyrs just masochists. / Lest you forget / we asked for this.
The album is filled with self-depreication, loss, destruction, and anger. What's more though, is that it is just balls to the fucking wall of rock and roll. It's Planes doing what they do best, and making you feel the worst of it while they're at it. This is serious album-of-the-year potential, now neck-deep in a year filled with really great music. If you've ever enjoyed this band, there's no reason to think this would disappoint in any way.

    My Score:

love this band... but i think they were starting to disappear up their own asses during this one.

couple decent songs, but a lot of garbage as well.

    this album is the eternal-hangover.

everyone of their albums has a unique characteristic and takes some time to grow on you but still maintains a distinct planes sound. the self titled was what a never-ending winter would sound like, knife in the marathon was pretty much what being stabbed in an alleyway and left to rats sounds like, fuck with fire is what being shot in the face and thrown out of a speeding car sounds like, up in them guts is what heartbreak sounds like, and this is a definite step forward. matt bayles definitely brought this band to a more polished sound (though i must say i do miss gamble's raw diy feel production) and there are more progressions on this record than many other planes albums.

don't get me wrong, fuck with fire was fast and hard (black flag on steroids) and there is nothing wrong with the intricacies of the new album by any means, it just made them that much more crushing. a band cannot reprocess every album or the listener becomes disenchanted. this band is certainly not a dime a dozen and i have only high hopes for them.

i put off buying this for a while... not being able to find it anywhere on maui and just being lazy when it came to ordering it off the internet (especially after hearing a less than impressive song on myspace or some shit).

then searching through Borders i discovered it in stock yesterday. today i bought it.

i was a fool for putting it off.

PMFS is one of those few bands that's constantly expanding and improving their sound from release to release so comparing one to another is near impossible.

    Hilarious

I would disagree with the guy below me to a point. I've been on the fence about this band from the first time I heard them. I didn't hate them, mind you, but they were one of the few .orgcore bands that didn't resonate with me like the others did. This album pushed me in the right direction. These guys do, in fact, kick all the ass available, and I was a goofball for not understanding that sooner. Planes Mistaken for Stars: mea culpa. I will see you in Nor-Call soon.

i bought this yesterday and have only gotten through the first half of it so far, but holy fuck is it amazing

If you didn't like Planes before, this sin't going to change your mind. But if you already liked them, you are going to LOVE this record

this band scares the fuck out of me

Goddamn, you kiddies keep bitching about good reviews, go to rolling stone and suggest they start throwing in various punk rock albums as part of their monthly review lineup. until then, this is all you have. Granted it's a punk rock gossip site that is sad and lame but it is ALL YOU HAVE...so shut the fuck up or write a better review yourself.

"Every second on this record sounds like the end of the world, as if it was one last catharsis before the earth broke in two and all life was lost."

Thank you. Seriously. That one made my day. I love hyperbole and poetic expression, but that sentence makes James Lipton seem pedestrian.

As for the album, I liked it. I'm a first time Planes listener and I was impressed. I didn't quite find it to be a cathartic work of Aristotelean genius, but maybe that's just me.

    solid review
    bitchin album
    lame album art

This review is pretty shitty, especially from someone who considers this to be so good and so near perfection, I'm disappointed that there is nothing in the review that tells me why.

There is absolutely no substance...I didn't know anything about this album and after reading this review I still don't.

pinkerton, you couldn't be more wrong. the album actually doesn't have that black border and the back of the packaging and the disc itself is absolutely gorgeous. the cover is not the best but the artwork on this is stellar.

i think denver could be awesome. you have to remember that denver is a big city in the middle of fucking nowhere. so it's super hard for bands to survive there. there are good bands here, just a screwed up support system. but you're right about fear before... ...not a very good representation.

    My Score:

score is for the album cover. looks like a shitty playstation game.

"Denver is the next big thing. watch."

I'm sorry, but what? This is the best band Denver has to offer. Any other bands that start to get their shit together don't stick around long enough. Were you at DenverFest this year? Awful turn-out... and the whole 21 /all-ages separation was just shit.

Oh, and to put the cherry on the shitcake that is Denver: Fear Before The Blah blah blah.

    Now SEATTLE...

Dude, do you really need attention so bad as to make posts like this one? and what the fuck is "tated". is it like, when jason tate gets you and fucks your girl?

Silly man, we all know Jason Tate doesn't fuck girls.

    My Score:

"it was overproduced and the vocals sound terrible"

so it wasn't overproduced but badly produced, or are you sure it wasn't mixed badly....do you know what production is?

Anyway, this is a great record, I've never thought planes was depressing, intense yes, real yes, bracing yes, but depressing, meek, songs for victims no. These are songs you listen to while protecting your loved ones against a world that wants to take them.

Not as a knockout punch as 'up in them guts' but what could be, that album was pretty special.

    Best band touring today.

    wyzo

    "Album of the year.Fuck yes."

You know that part in a horror movie where someone thinks that they are safe, and then their buddy tell the person to look right above them? Then, the guy looks up, and some crazy shit jumps down on them and tears them to ribbons.
You know what I'm talking about?

So, look at the top of the review section, then come back and try to tell us here how this beats out THAT.

ps- calling people 'fags' still isn't cool. i've started using the term 'conservative republican' where the the homophobic might use the above mentioned f-word.

pps- calling me 'fag' or 'conservative republican' is hilarious.

Talk about lack of promotion. Did anyone know this came out the other week? Did Abacus even know? I wonder if these guys are bummed they backed out of their deal with Relapse for this...
