BraidBraid: Lucky to Be AliveLucky to Be Alive (2000)Braid Reviewer Rating: 2.5 User Rating: Contributed by: fatheadfathead (others by this writer | submit your own) Braid is a name I've constantly heard for the last 6 months. I had never heard even one song, but everyone says "Hey Mercedes sucks, bring back Braid", or something of that nature. So, on a random, drunken purchase, I now own this live album. Pros: The first thing I noticed about this band was.

Cons: I thought I was getting something spectacular when I bought a Braid cd. I probably should have started with an actuall studio album, to get a better appreciation for the songs themselves. The live album was more likely released for the rabid Braid fans, and not for the first time listener. I will say that this album introduced me to what real 'Emo" sounds like. Fugazi,to me, has always been a punk band, and the Get Up Kids suck. 'Lucky to be Alive' has its high points and its low points, leaving the listener feeling no better, or no worse than when he first presses play. I reviewed Bigwig as well..I have yet to see it. Where the hell is my Bigwig review? I was at this show. This live album does NOT do it justice. I have the setlist. The live album maybe includes 2/3s of the songs they played that night, plus they edited out ALL of the crowd banter [which there was plenty of - especially my bitchin yell of "Play some Figurehead!" between songs which no one but the band got, it seems]. Glue Factory really fucked this one up - a 45 minute live album of a 90 minute concert? Right. This was one of the best concerts of my life, too bad it got ruined by becoming the "official" live disc. It's worth tracking down the 8/20 show at the Fireside Bowl, too - I have it on mp3 and it's bomb. |
