Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

It’s unfortunate that Lifetime only gained the reputation they did after breaking up, at least to those living outside of the tri-state area -- but I suppose that’s to be expected whenever a punk band with a gold record namedrops you on TRL and community center shows.

Lifetime is the latest offering from the New Jersey band, and (besides the Two Songs 7-inch) contains the first batch of new material fans new and old have heard from Ari Katz, Dan Yemin, Pete Martin, Dave Palaitis, and Scott Golley since they prematurely parted ways in 1997.

Had Lifetime been released less than 10 years after their last full-length, Jersey’s Best Dancers, there’s no doubt that it would have been hailed as their best work. Sure, they didn’t have a large enough audience to create much “hailing” back then, but Lifetime would have changed that, if anything could have. In 2007, the album should still stand as their best work. It’s got all the pop-punk/hardcore moments that made them appealing to begin with and Katz’s vocals still wonderfully straddle the balance between snotty and clean in his delivery. Most of the songs on Lifetime are uncomplicated and unabashedly pop-punk, such as the stunning opener, "Northbound Breakdown," which brings with it clean soaring choruses and up-tempo verses, offering listeners the perfect welcome mat to the band. Other songs, most notably "Just a Quiet Evening," lean more heavily towards the hardcore end of the spectrum. However, most of the songs present a balance, with a certain bias towards infectious melody.

I have little doubt that if Lifetime were released in 1999, and if the band wanted it, Lifetime could have been the biggest pop-punk band on the amphitheatre circuit. Those of us already counting ourselves as fans of the band can take a selfish deep breath, though, in knowing that such fame is pretty unlikely today. Lifetime is still too rough around the edges to make a significant impact on video rotations. Their eponymous effort also comes too late to be appreciated on its own. Lifetime has become almost legendary in punk rock and there was no way the band was going to be able to live up to the hype they’ve become a part of, a hype largely fuelled by a few live shows, press releases, and the tease of new songs.

Despite the initial disappointment a few might have when either thinking, “This is what people made such a big deal about?” or “I liked it more a decade ago,” Lifetime still contains some of the best pop-punk songs you’re going to hear all year. Songs such as the anthemic "All Night Long," the dancefloor sprawl of "Yeems' Song for Nothing" and direct Embrace nods of "Records at Nite" prove that the band wasn’t limited to what was offered on Two Songs. Lifetime is a quick rhythmic work that allows dudes such as myself to proclaim without fear, “Yeah man, I like pop-punk.” Thanks a lot Lifetime, I needed that.

except that i went with a girl who was visibly uncomfortable so i couldnt get too much closer than near the back. except for during "the boy's no good" because thats my favorite lifetime song (and apparently a bunch of other peoples' too). i also thought ari looked kinda ridiculous because he didnt seem to know what to do when he yelled out "yo dc! how's the scene out here?" and no one responded.

Posted by theyounginfluential on 2007-02-11 22:49:31

i did. that was a really fun show all the way through.

    Posted by feeeding5000 on 2007-02-11 14:52:36

Well, I saw 'em live (couldn't get rid of my extra tickets) and I actually had a really good time. The new songs are pretty good pop-punk/power-pop songs, with emotive but kinda cliche lyrics. The old songs are really a lot of fun, and I'm actually soory that I never got any of their releases beyond a burned copy of "Somewhere...". Seeing a huge crowd singing along to "The Boy's No Good" and watching the big circle pit during 'Danyuerism" were great moments. Ari seemed like a dick, but Dan was really well-spoken and interesting. Anyone else see them @ the Black Cat?

    My Score:

As someone who saw Lifetime several times in the mid-to-late 90's (outside of the tri-state area... what's up with that part of the review?), I think it was fun to see them play some shows again but... fair to say that these guys should stop putting new records out while they still have some integrity left. Give me Zero Zero over Lifetime part deux any day. Can't wait for Ari to start wearing makeup on their big support tour of '07...

I've always thought this band was alright, nothing exception al whatsoever (and you all can kill me now but I always liked Kid Dynamite so much better than Lifetime.) In fact the only memorable song to me they ever did was "Rodeo Clown" but I could listen to that song on repeat for about an hour. My question is, I have heard the Two Songs 7". If I didn't particularly care for those songs, should I bother with the full length?

Posted by Scruffy on 2007-02-08 23:04:12

Ari's voice sounds different, but it's still good. I really am enjoying this album.
My only complaint would be that all the songs tend to be samey. There're no really awesome guitar parts (ala Theme From A New Brunswick Basement Show) or any slow stuff (ala Hey Christine or I'm Not Calling You). But those are only small complaints. This is a good album. I hope there're more.

kid below me makes a good point. also, is it just me or does ari's voice sound the same, just more cleaned up on the production end? it's not like he started singing like pete steele all of a sudden...

I'd just like to point out a really obvious point that people seem to be missing: while yes, I'd like it if Lifetime released their records on Jade Tree or ANY other Indie label really, think about this: they're now signed to a label that will give them complete, utter freedom. Pete Wentz has, on multiple occasions, declared his unabashed love for this band. He wouldn't dare question anything they do. They aren't sell outs since this album isn't gonna be breaking any records. It'll roughly sell about as much as any other Lifetime record since it sounds like a Lifetime record. Yes, it's slick and nicely produced, but musically they haven't missed a beat. They're essentially in a very good place for any band. Great distribution and complete creative freedom.

    thats my roughly two cents.

PS: I'm rather fond of this record and I've only had it for 7 hours.

"If you loved their old stuff and don't like this, then you're to caught up in punk rock politics."

No way. This a fucking reunion album. It's getting by on post-break up hype, not to mention the art sucks and it's on one of the grossest lables ever.

    - You just proved the above quoted statement.

You also go on to say, " punk rock is political." I think you're confusing the use of the word "politics" here. It's being used to describe the "unwritten rules of punk rock ". You know, the ideas that it matters what label your on, what other bands are on said label, who runs the label. Or that it matters if you make a "reunion album", if there is "post break up hype", or if the "artwork sucks". These are all examples of punk rock politics. These are made up ideologies of what it takes to be, or what it means to be, or not to be "punk".
Punk bands writing songs about the government, or having awareness of local and global affairs, is a completely different thing.

I don't give a shit what label this came out on, so I won't really comment much on that.

I really enjoy this album a great deal and I'm really glad they've put out more material. I'm not going to say it's better than Hello Bastards or Jerseys Best Dancer, but I do think it fits into their catalog of music very nicely.
I'll be listening to this a whole lot.

But seriously, people need to just listen to a band and stop paying so much attention to the label name printed on the CD. Either you like the band or you don't.

jesus christ, what the fuck ever happened to just LIKING a fucking band or NOT LIKING it? all this infighting bullshit has to stop. punk rock CAN be political, but it certainly isn't an EXCLUSIVELY political genre. punk has just as much to do with purely SOCIAL change, unity among people with common ideas, goals and interests, and social inclusivity (inclusiveness?) as it had to do with "smashing the state" or whatever anti-flag is shoveling into your ear to get you to buy their fucking $20 t-shirts at hot topic.

lifetime are a pretty decent band. not all-time greatest, not terrible, but they're pretty good. some people agree with me, some people don't, some people are ambivalent. simple as that. really, that's all there has to be said about punk rock in general. punk rock just fucking IS. there's not supposed to be some fucking hierarchy and fucking kings/queens of "the scene" and people shitting on others for liking a band just because they're on a record label run by some douche most of us don't care for. the fact that the music exists and that we're able to enjoy it completely negates all that. stop worrying about the goddamn fall out boy association (if any, really, other than the fact that pete wentz has his signature on the ownership papers) and just take the goddamn music for what it is. if you don't like it, fine. i'm sure there's plenty of other stuff for you to listen to and talk about in a positive light, rather than wasting negative energy on a band you don't like.

This is probably the most intelligent statement regarding Lifetime I've read on the 'Org in a while. Thank you for that. I'm sick of people getting their panties in a twist over this whole thing. I personally am not a fan of this album, but it's solely because I hate Ari's new vocal style. Music is great and I have no issue whatsoever about them being on Pete Wentz's label. If you like Lifetime great, if you don't, great, but if you don't, don't try and sit there and tell other people who do like them all the reasons they shouldn't be listening to them.

A super solid effort to update Lifetime's razor-sharp punk rock regimen with sugary pop platitudes.

as for the album, same deal. i am stoked that a band that i thought i would never hear make another album put out another album. since the time gap is so wide i knew it wouldn't be the same, and the album is not. but i appreciate that because of the evolution of lifetime. this album has a lot less hardcore elements in it and is a lot lighter than their previous releases, but the songs are still catchy and great. i have listened through it various times over the past few days, and i like it. it didn't change my world or blow me away, but it is a good solid album. the only thing i could complain about (which seems like the thing to do) is lyrically i do not think it is their strongest work (though ari mumbles/makes up less words). i still need to sit down and read through them all, and maybe it is just not at a point of my life i can relate as much, but i won't hold it against them.

    Rock on,

Can't wait to get this at Best Buy today. So far from what I heard live and on their recent 7-inch, I'll be pleased with the results. Though the chances of me running into any Fall Out Boy merchandise at BB will probably be great. oh well, definitely worth it in this case.

    My Score:

I don't see how a fan of the band, or even the genre, could dislike this based solely on the music thats on this disk.

I can understand people not liking that it's on Decaydance, or those that say the whole reunion thing is all about the money, but as far as the songs themselves go, nothing has really changed except that it's a bit cleaner sounding.

This album isn't amazing or life changing, and it certainly doesn't live up to the impossibly high standards people seem to have for bands like this, but it's a solid record and a good addition to the Lifetime catalogue.

    8/10

    good review.

Coming from a person who's favourite albums are Seveninches and Hello Bastards, this album is pretty good but takes some growing. Airport Monday Morning seemed like total cheese at first but in comparison to the single Boys No Good it isn't that different. I guess it is all about expectations, I wasn't expecting another Hello Bastards so I wasn't disappointed.

This music is fuckin good, I hope this stuff gets on MTV it is a great passageway for kids to get into punk. I doubt this will get very popular though because the singers voice just isn't mainstream enough.

old lifetime was ridiculously overrated. and kid dynamite destroyed anything they ever did. that being said, this album is actually pretty fucking good. why? it sounds more like kid dynamite than lifetime.

This album IS pretty good. I'd put it just below "Jersey's Best Dancers", to which I'd give a 9.

But I am going to have to jump on the "something wrong with Lifetime" bandwagon only to say that the cover-art is pretty fucking awful.

With that said, I'll jump back to the "Lifetime Rules!" bandwagon.

Is Punknews.org Lifetimes new PR Firm? This isn't a review as much as it is a fucking fans press release. What the hell? You report when they wipe their ass! The funny thing is tha I love Lifetime and think that this is a cool record. Still the dynamic between this site and Lifetime is just fucking wierd.

how many times can you put the phrase "pop-punk" in one review?

Posted by Scruffy on 2007-02-06 11:34:19

There's a difference between "doing it for the money" (aka, let's get rich) and reforming because enough people care now that it's more fun and you won't LOSE money.
Also, all that jazz about how it was originally a one-time reunion for Hellfest, and the shows went so well and it was so much fun they decided to stay together.

yes. because all albums should be judged solely on the artwork of their albums... and by the way i kind of dig the artwok on this album. i mean it's not upping the punx but it's abstract enough to be kinda cool.

i wish they would have spent more than 30 seconds doing the cover for this album. what a fuck you to fans waiting for this.

Why can't they just be doing it for the fun of it?

Good review Ben. I haven't heard the whole thing yet, so I'm not gonna comment much. I will say, however, I disagree with you on Ari's vocals (from the songs I've heard at least). They seem a bit too smooth for me, which takes a bit of an edge off of them. I'm sure I'll get used to it after a few listens, but thats my first impression.

    My Score:

deserving of the praise.sonically this is probably the band's best record. in terms of delivering art that shatters context, the winner is hands down Hello Bastards, simpyl for the fact that when it came out, nothing really sounded like it. But the eponymous release is its own context, which means it is not new and groundbreaking the way Bastards was.

either way, a great record. The second verse of "I cant think about it now" is a definite sweet spot.

the people who don't think lifetime are doing it for the money don't have to depend on money for survival, expanding possibilities, and keeping yourself in good health after the kickass prime of your 20's.

Now get kid dynamite back together, record an album, do no press release junkets for it, suprise everyone with it in record stores one glorious morning, deny all tour interviews, eat shards of glass and have Jason pull the van to every date with a bridle in his mouth to save gas (he's free now you know).

It’s unfortunate that Lifetime only gained the reputation they did after breaking up...

I'm not sure what "reputation" you speak of. There were well-known in their day. Also, before Fall Out Boy mentioned them there was a little band called Saves The Day that made a big splash in the indie/punk circuit who were constantly compared to Lifetime.

i absolutely love this album. its their fastest one yet, and while it still doesnt quite top Jersey's Best Dancers (although did anyone really expect it to?), its a fantastic album. i have to admit, this surprised me a bit.

the one complaint i do have is that the chorus for Airport Monday Morning is somewhat annoying. unfortunately its also the second track.

    major major major disappointment

also...ari katz = tim armstrong lou holtz

I Love all of Lifetimes work, and I love this!
Got it in the mail today, and Ive spun it about 3 times
(not counting the ridiculous amount of time I spent listening to the songs that trickled out over the last couple months)
I was really suprised at how freaking fast this cd is,
I would say their fastest album yet, I dont think anything on their other albums ever hit this speed, and 10 out of the 11 songs, hit top speed at some point
Im super stoked for the show in San Fransisco!

    Good review.
I agree with the guy a few post down when they said they missed the heartache evident in "Jersey's Best", Thats really the only thing missing.
I haven't been able to stop listening to this one, the boys really outdid themselves.
Early favorites (other than the ones already on "two songs") are "Can't think about it", "Quiet Evening" and "Monday morning airport".

It's only Febuary and this is already a contender for album of the year.

If your a Lifetime fan, than give this a couple spins to sink in, and you will realize this is right up there with JBD. I love this album and I think it may even be the best thing they have put out. I love track number 5.

I'm not sure, but it's possible that the Fallout Boy record was only certified gold at the time they referenced Lifetime on televeison.

Posted by tenwestchaser on 2007-02-06 00:11:17

So what punk band with a gold record name dropped Lifetime on TRL? Fall Out Boy are platinum selling......so was it NFG? Or maybe it was Fall Out Boy before going platinum?

Posted by inagreendase on 2007-02-06 00:03:31
    My Score:

It's missing JBD's heartache, but the production is absolutely spot on and this whole thing is so, so fun. This could've been released in 1999 and no one would be the wiser.

the anthemic "All Night Long," the dancefloor sprawl of "Yeems' Song for Nothing" and direct Embrace nods of "Records at Nite"

There are so many standouts on this, but these might be the highlights for me.

It's not Jersey's Best Dancers, but it's really, really close.
