Emmure’s Goodbye to the Gallows is the band's debut full-length, which is entirely apparent in just about every aspect. Producing one of the most recycled metal/hardcore albums to be released in some time, if you wanted me to sum up Emmure in one simple phrase I would call them “Misery Signals gone tough-guy hardcore.”

Generically enough, the band opens the album with “A Ticket for the Paralyzer,” which is nothing more than a 50-second breakdown leading into “10 Signs You Should Leave.” Right from the second song there are a number of flaws apparent, but the layered assault of guitars and occasional chaotic feel behind the instruments overall is somewhat interesting. Too bad by the time the song is halfway through you realize that it's all been one continuous breakdown, and that very same breakdown shows up on the next song, and the next, and just about every other song after that, occasionally giving way to the occasional melodic chord or guitar line that is semi-interesting, but is immediately ruined by, well, the following breakdowns.

The album reaches its pinnacle on “When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong,” which features an opening shout that sounds like what happens when the shouter is trying to refrain from sneezing while screaming his guts out. Besides around 80 percent of the song being nothing but a breakdown, the ending features one of the worst vocal parts ever, as the audible “won’t you be my bride?” is backed by laughable dual screams. It literally sounds like a crazy stalker professing his love while his three friends are prancing around him screaming. If it weren’t so comical I might have thrown up a little.

And that’s basically it. Emmure could eventually progress into a better band, especially if they continue with their Misery Signals influence and rely less on the breakdown. But as they are now, Goodbye to the Gallows is one of the year’s most generic releases. If you live for the breakdown and want to get your mosh on, then you’ve found your next favorite band. But for the rest of us, this is just another reason why hardcore is become nothing more than a big joke.

If you dance you will enjoy this album. If your some fag who sits there and headbangs or pushmoshes (which is an excuse for fags to touch eachothers balls) then you dont matter

    Wow, just wow.

I'm for whatever people want to do, but in the end, 'pushmoshes' are far more 'br00tal' then hardcore dancing. Hardcore dancers really aren't supposed to hit each other, so there's 'supposed' to be no contact...even though that never happens. A legit mosh pit is probably gonna be a lot more crazier then hardcore dancing.

Then again, having a pit go back and forth between pushing and hardcore dancing...while people in the front push, middle hardcore dance...add in a circle pit and a wall of death somewhere in the bands set...thats how crowds should react.

Especially since so many bands have breakdowns, so even bands that warrant a mosh pit have parts where kids can dance too.

What I dislike about bands like these is that they think they play Hardcore, Which, in reality, it isn't hardcore isn't breakdowns and bree bree bree chugga chugga WEEE. Hardcore is fast aggresive punk. If you want good hardcore, start with the bands who opened the gates: Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Cro-mags, Black flag, etc.

Posted by eyeslikebombs on 2007-03-07 15:33:24

Is it really a breakdown if it lasts the whole song?

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at 12:40 PM (EST)

As a cthc kid this band is a complete joke. They are fake dudes in a fake band. They don't support ct and ct will never support them. THIS BAND ISN'T ALLOWED TO PLAY CT. so fuck them and fuck victory records, they got bad when they dropped OLC!

Posted by GlassPipeMurder on 2007-03-07 01:56:19

well this is not hardcore...maybe it's not metal either, but it's an embarassment to be associated with hardcore.

Whoa Glass Pipe Murder! Don't be calling this garbage metal. You guys may think that metal ruined hardcore, but I think it's the other way around......Score is for bands like this ruining metal, like they have for the past 6 years.

"What I think is funny is that nobody makes the true comparison of who they sound like: The Acacia Strain."

Yeah, I was surprised this review didn't say anything about them. I listened to most of this album once in the car with a friend of mine last week. The first three or four tracks were pretty enjoyable, if only for the absurdity of the constant breakdowns, and the fact that those breakdowns are always in diminished fifths. Definitely not an album you can listen to for more than 20 minutes though. The rest of it was incredibly boring. Kind of like a comedian repeating the same joke over and over in different ways.

Also, aren't most breakdowns in metalcore open chugging and not strictly dissonant chords? I mean, that's why I don't think this should be considered as generic as, say, Dead to Fall. Lame claim, I know, but as a guitarist I find dissonant breakdowns much more enjoyable, and as a result, less generic. I don't listen to too much metalcore though, so maybe I'm missing out. God forbid..

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 4:36 PM (EST)

fuck this band. they fuckin suck. i hate the kids who love them and think they know shit about hardcore. fuck em

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 4:11 PM (EST)

For the most part I think hardcore has always been a joke.

Posted by moneenerd on 2007-03-06 16:09:47

the only reason hardcore has a bad name is because of VICTORY RECORDS. crazytoledo, hardcore is far from a big joke. if we hated every punk genre because the majority of the more accessible (bigger labels) bands were crap, then alternative music period would be a "big joke". look beyond what HMV is able to throw at you for 20$ a pop, and go check out bands like Career Suicide, Cloak/Dagger, and even Ambitions, and see what real hardcore is.

Posted by GlassPipeMurder on 2007-03-06 14:05:24

i repeat: this is not hardcore. this is shitty shit-metal. Victory can do much better than this; I got the early Victory Style II, III and IV and they are much better than this crap.

Posted by nocigar on 2007-03-06 13:36:07

    why not have any breakdowns?

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 1:25 PM (EST)

Crazytoledo- Sorry...I was under the impression that you had some sort of vendetta against Victory, and felt it necessary to give every new Victory release a score of four or lower. I guess I was wrong. If most of the recent stuff is bad, then why even bother?

CRAZYTOLEDO: STOP REVIEWING VICTORY RELEASES. Oh, and "Emmure? More like Manure! LOL amirite?"

    I LIKE VICTORY RECORDS.

Apparently I have to resort to use all caps to get my point across, just like you.

It just happens that a lot of the newer releases are generic.

Bands should be limited to only 3 breakdowns per album, better yet, don't have any breakdowns.

Than quit being jaded fucks and go out and find out about more bands. Discounting hardcore after listening to this is like deciding metal sucks after listening to Poison.

What I think is funny is that nobody makes the ture comparison of who they sound like: The Acacia Strain.

This is a great CD, but its flaws are its shortness and its feable attempt to pad it by having the said 50 second intro track as a seperate song listing, as well as "Travis Bickle" which is nothing more than 2 minutes of ambience. The last song also has a bunch of filler at the end.

What I would've liked: Same sound, same writing, but about 2 or three more FULL songs totalling about 36 minutes for the entire album with NO filler. Hell, they released a great EP awhile back no one will ever hear due to the obscure label that put it out. They should've rerecorded a couple of these songs instead of adding the filler. That would've ben somehwat more acceptable at least...
