Reviews

If any genre of punk-related music can bring out the best, and the worst in its bands, ska is right up there. For a style that has so much talent, diversity and overall cultural influence, it seems a stagnant progression in the "third wave" left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. Sure, the music was fun, but people grow up, and honestly, the same riffs and horns get tired and worn.

Boston's Big D and the Kids Table have been trying to carve out of that niche for a few years now, though it wasn't until 2004's How It Goes that the band was able to break out of the same stereotypical sound and put ska back on the map. Truly walking the line between punk, third wave ska and traditional ska influence, it was a record that seemed to proclaim that the genre wasn't going down without a fight.

The band returns with a new album on a much larger platform with indie giant SideOneDummy, and the band hasn't just lost a single step -- they've take one giant leap forward. Strictly Rude builds on the influences hinted at in How It Goes, but begins to formulate the music into a sound and style of their own.

There are the faster, more upbeat numbers, such as "Noise Complaint," "Fly Away" and "Breaking the Bottle," which only confirm the band's roots in punk, but the tone is less brash and contains more of a "party" feel to it. It's material that would easily translate into their live show seamlessly. This point is most clearly demonstrated in the album's opener "Steady Riot," a rock number that, while staying up-tempo, has a smooth feel to it.

However, Strictly Rude, per its title, more often than not delves into traditional dub and ska, and the band it executes it finer than medieval beheadings. Songs like "Shining On," "Strictly Rude" and the organ-heavy "Try Out Your Voice" take this approach and intermingle it with an anthem-laden chorus and crunching guitar chords apiece. "The nightclub's closing down they say!" shouts mouthpiece Dave McWane in "Relocate the Beat," which establishes a wonderful, Specials-style atmosphere.

Ska is defined by many by the inclusion of horns, and that's really where Big D hit their stride. Instead of writing songs that attempt to shove this stereotype at the listener, they create music that blends a melody of sounds and instruments providing a full demonstration of the art they are conveying. This leads to my feelings about a quality contained in this record that again continues from How It Goes: Strictly Rude is an album meant to be listened to in its entirety. If you want to pick up something to pluck a few tracks from, "Steady Riot" will fit your MP3 player's playlist nicely. But to fully appreciate this album, sit down, have a drink, and take the 51 minutes to absorb something you can easily listen to in 20 years that won't sound the least bit dated.

I'm really glad big d came through with such a sick album, I was psyched to hear them mix up their style with some more chill songs

'07's albums of the year, at least top 5

possibly their best....tied with How It Goes.
their creativity continues and sets them apart from other ska bands that have given the genre a bad name.

    My Score:

This album is fucking horrible. I don't get their popularity- all their other albums are crap as well. The singer is horrible, the horns unimaginative, and the songs are just not creative.

The song "Strictly Rude" is the worst remake of "Uptown Top Ranking" EVER. It's really unlistenable- they suck all the soul and feeling out of an amazing reggae song.

Even the new Tim Armstrong song is better than this junk.

AndrewKauervane, bro... sorry, but you're a dummy and an embarassment to yourself. I know this because you:

1.) clearly aren't a serious musician and don't understand why this music is pathetic (I know this because you can't relate to "L.A.X.", one of the best accounts of a touring musician ever recorded).

2.) clearly have no understanding of music if you don't hear the blatant similarities between "Steady Riot" and "Time Bomb".

3.) clearly have an unusual infatuation with Dave McWane that makes you completely oblivious to his flaws. I mean, I look up to the man too, but you fucking said he sings "touching melodies". Maybe you're actually deaf. You should get that checked.

4.) clearly listen to Buck-o-Nine and the Know How. Nuff said.

I see you're from MI. If you see this, I'd like to know who your favorite local bands are. You obviously care a ton about ska, so you should know a ton. Mustard Plug doesn't count. Start naming.

As a big ska fan i have never been much of a big d fan for some reason. maybe it's the talky vocals, dunno. but this cd is GREAT. could be the cd that saves ska.

    My Score:

From the recent posts I've read, most of you are musically inept idiots who only want to harshly review something because it is different than the bands previous attempts. Strictly Rude will seriously go down as one of the best albums of all time, possibly even the best album of 2007. Each song is designed for feel, and aren't made for the douchebags that just like ska so they can mosh the shit out of someone at a show. Every single song has thought provoking lyrics, touching melodies, and vocals that literally stomp out all other efforts by David McWane. The only track I have a problem with on this album is Hell On Earth. The song is lyrically sound, but musically it leaves alot to be desired. To me it just sounds like another L.A.X (One of the worst Big D songs out there.) Also, how the fuck does Steady Riot sound "exactly" like Time Bomb? The only reason you think that is because Rancid was MENTIONED in the official review of the album. Stop being idiots, and find some REAL music taste.

    My Score:

there is no way in hell the big d didnt know that steady riot sounds exactly like time bomb. i mean..sure bands use the same chord progressions all the time...but even the guitar strokes..the rythm...everything up to the chorus...what fucking losers. this band is lame.

the only reason i havent scored this Cd is because i havent heard the entire thing yet, but that will come next week along with my check. and i hate to break it to ALL the people who say that this band sucks but Big D and Streetlight ARE THE BEST SKA BANDS out right now. Now hailing from the south shore of mass, im a pretty big fan of big D, but they'll never be the bosstones. still, from what ive heard- awsome

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, March 29, 2007 at 12:56 AM (EDT)

The only people who seriously like this album are shitty high schoolers who think Streetlight Manifesto is ska. This review sucks almost as bad as the album.

1.) "Steady Riot" is Rancid's "Time Bomb" with different lyrics.
2.) I got sick of "Noise Complaint" about 30 seconds into it the first time I saw them play it a year ago.
3.) Vocals on "Shining On" sound like "My Humps" or sometimes "Hollaback Girl". I'm telling the truth.
4.) "Hell On Earth"... Let the damn cows mooooooo haha. Disgusting.
5.) "Fly Away" is "Little Bitch".

The only good songs are the reggae songs, which are actually done really well.

Score is for Jeff Rosenstock on the cover.

the slow songs don't bring it down in my opionion, instead they give the album more balance than a typical third wave ska punk cd. they have more dimensions to their sound and I like that, whether its the dub of 'strictly rude' or 'she knows her way back home' or the skank crazy classic two tone sound of 'noise complaint' to the bosstones like horn bridge between the verses and in the intro to 'put the bottle down' to the suidide machines 'destruction by definition' happy anthem 'souped up vinyl' to the reggae tinged breezy "the one" to the happiest fucking summer ska happy as shit 'shining down' which is probably the best ska punk song i've heard since 'souped up vinyl' which is probably the best ska punk song i've heard since 'everybody's better' from teh Bosstones last album, or perhaps even longer ago than that.

after about 5 listens it hit me. this shit is almost, almost as good as 'losing streak' , 'destruction by definition', or any bosstones album and has a little bit of flavor of all 3 of those bands , particuarly the suicide machines (and a dash of jesse michaels vocal stylings) but really they're doing something altogether original within the familiar context of third wave ska. but the dabblings into two tone and ska punk and street punk and dub make it seem much more broad and varied than say...reel big fish.

a must have for any ska/ska punk fan. probably the best shit going out there right now. certainly from the heart, working mans lyrics, down to earth ya know? perfect album for the warming weather as well.

so far its album of the year. theres a few misteps (deadpan face) but overall, the majority of the 15 tracks are fantastic, and the energy just doesnt' stop. nice flow too.

if i was, say 17 and not 26, i'd probably be shitting my pants right now. this very well could be many a young n' impressinable ska punk kids 'losing streak' or 'destruction by def.' and i don't say that lightly and i mean that as about the highest ska punk compliment you can give

Alright, so how long is this thing? I can't take another 70 minute album.

the only "pussies" are the anonymous pieces of shit like you who drag everything you can through the mud with no credible backup.

Easily one of the absolute worst albums I have ever listened to. Stop worrying about your image.

I've been telling people for months and months that this would be Big D's massive hit record. Maybe it won't be as far as sales, but I think it definitely is as far as sound/style/production. Going back to Shot By Lammi, it's amazing to see the growth. Best ska record in a very long time. Hopefully Mad Caddies' new one is equally good.

Maybe I need to listen to this album again, I skimmed through the album and absolutely NOTHING grabbed me. Not like throwing on The Gypsie Hill EP where every fucking song rules.

This is the best thing this band has ever done.

I didn't include this in my review, but I love the production on this record. Though the vocals are a little too clean, the layering of the instruments is so awesome. I was driving on my lunch break today listening to this, and I can't recall which track it was, but during a bridge the sound from the toms just bounced into my left ear from nowhere.

    Killer album.

    My Score:

So fucking good. This gets an 8 even just for "Steady Riot," "Noise Complaint," "Souped-Up Vinyl," "Strictly Rude," and "Relocate the Beat."

Could also be the only (trad-)ska album I'll forseeably be listening to for a while.
