I don't like this sort of stuff at all, it's boring retreads, but aren't you the same kids that get all silly over just as dull, trite, seen-it-a-million-times-before stuff as Kid Dynamite, Converge or Paint It Black?'

Really? you've seen it a million times with Converge? Weird, you must have been seeing them do it a million times then, because not only is that band in a league of their own as far as hardcore goes in general, and then there is also the fact that they have been around for, oh, I don't know, around 14 fucking years now.

Wikipedia was made so people who don't know anything about the bands they talk about can be given a chance to not look like tools. Maybe you should take a look!

i would say GALLOWS is a lot more like 90's post-hardcore (like Drive Like Jehu, The Corta Vita, Hot Cross) than they are 80's hardcore. Other than a few riffs here and there, i don't see much of anything "hardcore" there.

    Posted by Albert_Belle on 2007-07-17 12:49:37

Live this band is decent, they do their thing, they're nice dudes too. But their music is repulsive, just terrible.

Have a sense of humor, Mikey! I like Gallows, and this review made me laugh quite a bit. Well done Brian!

Josh, you know I enjoy a good laugh. But this review wasn't funny, it was pointless. I don't care that he didn't like the band; each person is entitled to his or her opinion. But if you can't convey your thoughts into words, don't bother. Gimmick reviews are for individuals lacking writing skills or just going for the "shock" approach.

    Hilarious.

Nice review. I'd been wondering what the deal was with these guys for a while. I've noticed some of the hype, but had no clue what they were like. Oh well. At least they're not Enter Shikari.

Way to go Warped Tour. Not only is your logo sold out and contrived, but you mentioned something about the band being a four piece when the press picture you put RIGHT NEXT TO THAT SENTENCE clearly has five people.

i wrote these guys off at first for being a "hardcore" band on epitaph records... but by golly they could fit right in when epitaph was good!

is the reviewer American or British? the band are full of enthusiasm and have a great future. who cares if they sound like alot of American bands. they are gallows and they do thier thing, extremelly well. once you see them live you'll know. saw them in Bristol on my 23rd and they sung me happy birthday

So we're clear, the best band playing '80s hardcore this decade is Western Addiction.

Western Addiction is good but I'd say they are maybe the easiest band to find music of that plays 80's hardcore this decade. There are plenty better bands playing 80's hardcore Warkrime and Career Suicide to name a couple.

Great band. I saw them at the Calgary Warped Tour and they were fucking awesome. I enjoy them alot more live than I do the album, but I still think you should pick this up. It reminds me alot of good 80's hardcore, thats a good thing...

while i agree that the new Pissed Jeans is good. its not as revolutionary as people claim it to be. i really don't feel all that much intensity when listening to Hope For Men. Shallow was much more intense.

oh god, I love this review, excellent job. you know something's wrong in the world when Gallows are considered the cream of Epitaph.

I always saw them as a major label tool - there's a saturation of emo bands out there, and the majors know this. "not interested in MCR/FOB/Panic? then listen to Gallows! your money will still go to us in the end anyway".

insane theories aside, they should really rot in hell for their cover of Nervous Breakdown.

This album is good, but certainly nowhere near as good as I had hoped it would be. Orchestra of Wolves, In The Belly Of A Shark and a couple more are really good stand outs. NME jumped on them because if they got huge (they aren't going to any time yet) they could say they got it right.

    Review was funny as fuck.

november coming fire are a great band, dont nock.
the ghost of a thousand are also a form of bronx cover but done better and there isnt as much bullshit hype about them. the gallows arent terrible or good merely mediocre i really dont see what the fuss is all about. this review is nearly as good as one of the hwm ones

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at 3:01 PM (EDT)

right on with the Bronx comparison! This band is not terrible, but just kinda too polished for me. Were it a little grittier, it'd probably appeal to me more...i hear they put on a good live show.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at 2:14 PM (EDT)

Abandon Ship and Attack! Vipers! are stellar but, seriously? What exactly is so awful about The Steal?

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at 1:32 PM (EDT)

Calling this band a Bronx knockoff is the easy way out because you know nothing about rock influenced punk. Gallows definitely "do that style" but they draw their sound from bands like Murder City Devils and Drive Like Jehu.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at 9:59 AM (EDT)

Sooooo.... No review, then, huh? Just a score and a lame attempt to be witty? Are those pictures and comparisons supposed to be a proper analysis of the album?
I'm sorry, but that was the most hypocritcal thing I've read on the internet all day. It was fighting hype with (anti) hype. Just like the publications you cited, you judged based on word-of-mouth, rather than judging the album -- as an album not as a marketing ploy.

Please Mr. Gravedigger sound very little like The Bronx. More screamy, less melodic, way more keyboard-centric as well. Their debut record was pretty solid but I seriously doubt The Bronx are like pantomime villains running around going "NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW OUR SECRET". You could tell either band apart with ease.

they do seem to be getting a lot of coverage in my native uk though.

My jaw is going to be on the floor for the next few hours, greatest review i've ever seen in my entire life.

Yes, punknews have somehow been spared of all the hype, so a lot of people on here won't get it, but wow, i've never seen such a spot-on-piece of journalism. Brian, you're going to the big leauges!

    To clarify a bit:
They recorded a demo, got signed on a very small uk label, british music press hears it and decides to hype it more than they hyped franz ferdinand, and warners pick them up for the world and epitaph in the us. All in a year.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at 6:39 AM (EDT)

well the first thing i thought about the first time i heard the bronx was that they sounded almost like an exact rip-off of my friends band Please Mr. Gravedigger. which got at least a decent amount of exposure before breaking up and were also around a few years before The Bronx. being that Please Mr. Gravedigger was from San Diego and The Bronx aren't too far away being from L.A. it's not really that far fetched. and Please Mr. Gravedigger was really just an updated/more hardcore influenced version of murder city devils.
