Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

An album as anticipated as this one is daunting to approach. It's tempting to write some sort of treatise on Against Me!'s place in the punk scene (if there is one), the nature of independent versus major labels, the "punk ghetto," and a whole heft of other topics. The one thing that all of these topics -- which are sure to be covered here, there and elsewhere -- miss the real point, which is the music.

The album starts out with the title track, "New Wave." While the name implies something innovative, the song delivers little of anything new or interesting from the band. The chorus is bland, the drumming repetitive and obnoxious and the general feel exhausted. The subject matter, sadly, is more of the same self-obsession that we saw so prevalent on Searching for a Former Clarity. "Up the Cuts" follows with its similar subject matter -- what appears to be an indictment of the music industry from all sides. A later track, "Piss and Vinegar" approaches the same sort of commentary and quite frankly it all just falls flat. I'm personally just not interested in hearing a grown man complain about the politics of the music industry while he is digging himself deeper and deeper into them with each interview, music video and ill-placed duet he places on an album.

The lead single, "White People for Peace," feels moderately out of place on the album, along with the previously live-only release "Americans Abroad." Both songs feature a more "traditional" Against Me! approach, although both come across hollow in the end. "White People" is particularly frustrating given that the band rose to popularity singing "protest songs in response to military aggression" themselves. There's an air of smug "insight" that runs through the album, serving more to frustrate and insult the listener than educate them in any way.

There are standout tracks on the album. Well, standout in a way that demands attention, negative as it may be. "Stop" features quite possibly the most obnoxious combination of repeated phrases and drumbeat since the Bee Gees' debuted "Stayin' Alive." This combined with the worn out subject matter of the music industry and all the woes found within, I wonder if the band really did stop and take some time to think about what the hell they were doing here. "Animal" and "Ocean" close the album in a bizarre fashion. The former sounds like an excerpt from an early 90s Stone Temple Pilots cover band. It's so out of place and left field that it falls flat on its face. "Ocean" is a grower. First it grows on you with its long, flowing narrative, then it falls off you as you realize Against Me! have produced the "punk rock" version of R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet," an 18-part tribute to Mr. Kelly's amazing ability to weave a 45-minute-long story without actually engaging the listener at any point. Quite frankly, the pretension combined with the lack of anything interesting going on musically is enough to kill my interest.

The much-anticipated duet with Tegan of Tegan and Sara is frustrating. The voices are barely able to play off each other as they weave a sophomoric story of love and distance. Again, it's simply not engaging to the listener. It sounds as if they took a similar route to Less Than Jake's last album and brought in some industry "hit writers" for this song. I think there was real potential here, as Tegan's voice is beautiful and could have provided a nice contrast to Tom's wailing; however, missed potential seems to be the name of the game here.

Though all is not lost, one supposes. The song "Thrash Unreal" features a great opening with its solid drumbeat and story of a worn-out drug addict looking for redemption. You can't help but feel as Tom cries "They don't know nothing about redemption, they don't nothing about recovery," that he's speaking about himself in some manner. This song is the shining star, although by the end of the song the lyrics have petered out, giving us the limp attack of "she can still hear the 'Rebel Yell' just as loud as it was in 1983" and it threatens to fall apart. Thankfully, the chorus is strong enough to carry you out feeling good when repeated ad naseum for a good 30 seconds.

Once the scene politics are gone, the 12" remixes forgotten and we all get over ourselves, the only thing that matters is the music. Sadly, it seems like Against Me! forgot that this time around, opting instead for rehashed and clichéd melodies and subject matters. They found themselves poised to deliver an album that proved that the "punk ghetto" was holding them back, that they could write an album without relying on some sort of veiled meta-critique of their own actions or that they still had the lyrical and musical magic that captured so many kids in so many basements, clubs and bars as they truly changed the landscape of the punk scene a scant four years ago. Sadly, they delivered a watered-down album full of rehashed themes, misplaced grabs at commercial play and a truckload of questionable choices in stylistic tangents.

    My Score:

Like many people have said, to me it's not the fact that they sold out that makes me dislike the album. I could care less and I know most of us would gladly accept more money for doing what they've been doing all along.

...But wait a minute, they're not doing what they've been doing all along. The music itself changed, the instrumentation and lyrics are simply boring. Look back at the lyrics for their first couple albums and compare them to Stop or Thrash Unreal and you will see a horrible change.

I realize they have changed majorly a couple times before, but they were usually changes for the better. In this case, they changed for the worse. And 10 songs is a major disappointment, they could have thrown in a couple acoustic songs. However, I have noticed they're trying to redeem themselves by doing acoustic versions of these songs.

But hey, if it were any other band, this album would be great. It's just disappointing to see these guys put out an album such as this after being great in the past.

    My Score:

All I have to say is that I'm pretty tired of the punk community downing on others for success. I've been in to these guys for a while now. About six or seven years. Whenever Crime! came out. I think it was 2001. Anyway, that's beside the point. I've been delighted to watch Against Me! grow. I think their music now is just as intuitive and has just as much to say as before. People have trouble accepting that Against Me! up to Reinventing Axl Rose is not the same Against Me! we see today. And I don't mean that in terms of their ideals and beliefs. I mean that in terms of anarchists per capita. Gabel intended to take the current Against Me! to a level not known by the original lineup. Why do you think the lineup changed in the first place? In any case, anyone who says that they have become everything they hate hasn't done their research. Yeah, they play huge venues, but big deal. People talk about self-obsession being a big thing with the band these days and then talk about how "Reinventing Axl Rose" is about Against Me!. Isn't that self-obsession? Besides, they've even said that the song is not necessarily about themselves. Just about where they came from. Gabel still helps me get in to shows for free. Plus, they've been playing benefit shows for very credible organizations and have not accepted any sponsors. And don't even talk about seeing their shit on TV. Who gives a shit? Everyone knows the label has control over that. Against Me! is doing exactly what they wanna do, regardless of what the fans or anyone else thinks. Last I checked, that's the opposite of selling out.

In closing, this album has some good things to say about the music industry, the state of mainstream music, politics, and just being a person. It's strange that you should complain that he's writing about the politics of the music industry. You can take a grown man complaining about politics... just not the politics of the music industry? Ah, OK. Makes plenty of sense. "The Ocean" and "Animal" explores some experimental boundaries that I hope are expanded upon later.

This album rules. Against Me! rules. Still does, still will.

Now shut up. You don't like it? Start a band. Show them what's up.

iv been an against me fan for many years but i think this album is very bland. ya i was pissed when against me joined a major label, but the reason was because i knew they would be ruined, just like AFI. Many bands on i feel are pressured to make something everyone will like and end up making music that isnt truly from the soul. which i think is what music is about. so fuck all you kids who give old against me fans shit because if you guys were fans of against me when we were you would feel the same way.

    Dear Tom Gabel,
Thanks you for ruining one of my favorite bands which i have had singing in my head for over 7 years now. I dont care that you signed a big contract, or headline at large venues; your content is what sucks. "Beautiful to live in poverty just to spite what they are selling" you are selling it now man, you are selling anarchy for a fucking profit. Capitalism and anarchy have made quite a nice family for against me.

Only ten tracks doesn't give you much margin for error. Half this album is catchy and pleasing to listen to, the other half is mediocre at best. The lyrics are pretty ordinary, and any remnants of the acoustic/folk AM! have been left behind.

What a spot-on review. There seems to be a lot of people commenting to the effect that people should 'just talk about the record, not the band and their actions' etc.. but the whole point and beauty of punk rock is that its not just muzak for the drive to work. It matters absolutely what the band does, says and stands for in relation to their record. The two are not disassociated from each other. If people wanted mindless, meaningless pap sung by retards, the shelves of Virgin are stacked with it. This difference is doubly important when the band used to be so outspoken and representative of DIY punk rock values as AM! were.

This record on the other hand is so trite and tailored for radio play and mainstream appeal you could've written a parody send-up any better. Tom Gabel's lyrics are vain, self-obsessed and its cringeingly obvious that he is doing his damnedest to become the next Bruce Springsteen. (Thrash Unreal is like a cover!) Like the review said, regardless of anything else, this is just a terrible record.

And as disappointed as I am by their absolute and irrefutable fall from grace, I'm glad that their major label debut stunk this much, because it serves them right.

    My Score:

I didn't like this album at all at first. It has grown on me a lot more, but it still has some weak tracks. New Wave is pretty good, but pretty boring after a while. The chorus just isn't good enough to be played over and over. Up the Cuts is probably my favorite song on the entire album. I believe it has a traditional Against Me! sound, but less screaming. The chorus really makes the song. Thrash unreal is a great song but gets to be a bit much after the second time they play the chorus. White People for peace is a decent traditional song. Stop is a song you either like or hate very much. Borne on the fm waves is okay i guess. It never really goes anywhere, but it's pretty catchy. Piss and vinegar has a decent intro then pretty much sucks. Americans Abroad is pretty cool, but they couldv'e done more to it i think. Animal is just kind of weird for me. I dont really like it at all. The ocean is a pretty good song and definitly a grower. But besides all of the that I was really glad to find Toms voice to have gotten a lot better and not as raspy sounding oppose to searching for a former clarity.

Honestly, the first time I listened to this I wasn't that impressed. After seeing them live again and hearing the songs from this in that setting I like them a lot more. It took me a few listens to get into the album and I still think there's some weak tracks but overall its pretty solid and not deserving of a lot of the shit its been getting.

"against me! seems to have sadly become the biggest joke in punk. i s'pose we'll never know why they decided to "go for it", but maybe this is an example of what not to do. oh yeah, and anti-flag, a far inferior band had a much more impressive major label debut. somethin's wrong with that."

i know it was a long time ago but this post is perfect.

    Posted by mrdogg45 on 2007-08-16 10:41:05

I've got to disagree with the review.

Against Me!, for better or for worse, have evolved from a folk-punk collective into a rock band. Not a punk band, but a rock band with a punk mentality, if that makes any sense.

That being said, I think this CD is great, and a good step forward from "Searching..." Repeat listens really help, as this record grew on me from day one. I can only think of two weak tracks on the record. Sure, there are only 10 tracks, but the other 8 are top notch, especiall Thrash Unreal and New Wave, which I think are as good as anything Against Me! has done.

On this record, I hear a band trying to push themselves forward, musically and in their mindset as to what "punk" is. After years of screaming and trying to make it matter, Against Me! made something that sticks in a more universal way, even if it doesnt have the same desperate attraction it once had. But imagine being the kid who gets turned on to Against Me! after listening to this album. Think how blown away they'll be when they get "Reinventing Axl Rose."

    Great record. Great Band

Im suprised that nobody has commented that Stop sounds (stylistically) very similar to Unprotected Sex and White People sounds quite a bit like From Her Lips. Both Stop and Unprotected sex remind me of Franz Ferdinand, in a bad way. Might just be me, but this pissed me off just as much as the lack of decent lyrics or accoustic guitars. And Animal may even be the worst song i've ever heard. Lazy. Lets hope they can make another great record a few years from now

i've come to the conclusion that this album would be a pretty solid 7 if they had put the two b-sides on this

"Full Sesh" in place of "Stop" after "White People"
"You Must Be Willing" in place of "Animal" before "Ocean"

really like those two songs and that would have flowed just as well with the rest of the album IMO

    My Score:

While I certainly feel this is AM!'s weakest release I think that most of the bad reviews are based more on how people feel about the band and not the album itself. Like most of you I was disappointed with this release the first time I heard it. But then again I was disappointed with both Searching (always makes me think of JEW when people refer to it as Clarity) and Cowboy upon first listen.

I've been listening to this for a week now and it has grown on me considerably. While there are still some unlistenable tracks on here, the good ones are more than enough to make up for it. Tom certainly has a knack for writing catchy pop melodies, despite the fact that these are his worst lyrics to date.

When judged against AM!'s other albums I'd give this one a 5/10 and feel that I was being generous in doing that. But when judged as a stand alone album, minus my views on the band, I'd have to give it an 8. It's still better than most of the crap being released today, not great, but pretty good. I'd make the obvious title reference here if I wasn't sure it had already been done many times before.

On a side note: I can't believe no one pulled Tom aside at some point to tell him dolphins are mammals and therefore don't breathe under water. I cringe everytime I hear that line.

I don't know what all the "cool kids" are complaining about . . . this album is pretty solid. There is a handful of really good tracks: "New Wave", "Up The Cuts", "Thrash Unreal", "White People For Peace", "Piss & Vinegar".

New Wave is definitely stronger than Former Clarity. Granted, "Animal" and "Ocean" is a horrible way to end this album.

being one of those kids that have followed these guys for years from the 1st time i saw them play on the flatbed of a truck, i wanted to throw in a few words. Going in, I knew it was gonna be produced, i knew the old Against Me! was gone and I'd have to rely on Searching For A Former Clarity as the last official album before it all went public.

I think it's a good album, but not one I'm going to be blaring on repeat like I would've before. The exclusivity is gone, I mean let's be honest. The reason this band is held in such high regards is because we knew we were a part of something special. We birthed it at DIY shows and were part of the reason that the major labels dropped in and started buying Warren drinks.

It sounds like with having songs on the album called Animal and Oceans, they're trying to be Pearl Jam. They're trying to sell millions of records and thats the feeling I get from a lot of the songs on the record. What will people want to blare on their ipod?

I enjoy most of the songs, though the production at the end of Oceans makes my skin crawl. Stop is good, it feels like a Clash song and is probably the big song on the album. With the media attention theyre getting and the big corporate machine rolling behind them, this is going to be a lot of peoples first introduction to the band and I think they did good on it. It sounds like an Against Me! album but its focus lays more on reaching that kid in the middle of nowhere than satisfying the scene.

the last 2 sentences of that review would have earned an A in any journalism class. it gave me a headache, but i'm old and cranky. that being said, why is everyone here afraid to continue to embrace a band that they all claimed to "love" about a year ago. once in a while bands do make records that step a bit from their "sound" in an attempt to reach further audiences and yes, to sell a bunch of records. remember, AM now have to answer to the head of a label if this shit crashes and burns. this record isn't that bad. in fact, it's rather good. it's certainly still AM in every way. if you're looking for them to reinvent the reinvented axl rose, it ain't gonna happen. there's a few great tracks on the record, and a few no so hot ones too. but to throw against me into the heap of shitty commercial bands is unfair though. they've still got more heart, more to say and more going for them than 99% of the dog shit that's reviewed, reported on and celebrated by the kids who read/work/and play at the org. but what the fuck do i know. when i was kid, my mother played culture club records.

That review is so right on the money it was if I wrote it. That is exactly how my buddy and I feel. Huge AM! fan from way back and New Wave is so depressing!!! They need to drop Butch Vig and stop the double and triple layering of Tom's Voice. They are not a studio magic, pop-punk, Mtv band, they are best at making music with raw energy and passion. This album left me feeling sad, like a great band died, and I agree what in the F#@k is up with "STOP"? Are you freaking kiddind me? I thought it was a joke at first. That just might be one of the worst songs i have ever heard, Unlistenable!!! Americans Abroad, The Ocean and Up the Cuts were great live before the album came out. Thats what I was expecting, not the boring, lazy, heartless, souless tracks that was recorded. Well i could go on and on and disect each horrible track but I wont. Anyway thanks for writting an article that speaks for all the true fans of AM! and great music. Mike

When someone says a band sells out (without being in a commercial for axe body spray, that is a valid reason), I automatically lose all respect for their opinion. I said that when I was in 7th grade. I will listen to music, if it is good, regardless of whether the band has "sold out" or not. Maybe that makes me less "punk", but I think the real reason for bands like Against Me! and Anti-Flag sign to major labels is to get their message out to a new group of people instead of just the same old fans who are so punk they just find reasons to bitch at yellowcard.

"If I read one more FUCKING off topic post, I'm going to not visit this site for a while. Big deal. But who pays for the ads? The labels, if labels think people are coming to this site then guess what? FUCK.

Follow absolutepunk.net and make it so you at least have to have a name to write something. THis site has been playing catch-up to AP since day 1 and like a retarded little brother is still shitting in their pants and playing with it while AP never has this "yellowcard" spam."

the way you talked about this album, you probably gave it 2 stars too many. its not the greatest they've put out, they probably should have only realeased an EP, but it isnt nearly as bad as you make it out to be. It has some really good songs, and some not so good ones. I give it a 3.

Yellowcard are religious? Cool, another reason to hate them more.

THe mainstream press is not going to fall for AM, just like Anti-Flag, they will name drop the clash and sex pistols and comment on a lyric or two and then forget them. By that time the old fans of AM will have found another band that speaks to them more honestly and AM will break up and start off-shoot bands that will never have the following. Nice try AM, you lose.

I'm on Yellowcards Street Team and they REALLY frown upon tagging things in non-related threads, they ask us to do stuff on myspace, at church, at the mall with friends, not on boards. And if we cuss and they catch us, then we are off the team for good, they are pretty religious.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, July 12, 2007 at 9:59 PM (EDT)

Yellowcard sucks, as does this Against Me album.

What is the deal about comments and being anonymous? Is it too much of a hassle to require everyone to at least make up a name? People could still read comments they just couldn't post them. Yellowcard okay and I don't think that I'll ever forget the have a TRL ready new CD called Paper Walls or whatever that fucktard said, but I kinda was getting into the back and forth but it's too confusing with all the random shit (I guess this isn't helping either, but maybe if it spawns some talk about comments and names).

NEWSFLASH....You can still be a poser, even if you admit it. I think that if you "march back" to a store with a opened CD and demand another one, the only thing you'll get in return is laughter and lots of it. Does Yellowcard have some sort of contest to spam sites or something? Even if their next record is like "lightening striking twice" (god good that is trite) I doubt people here care, they already know if they like them or not. Go troll on AP or Myspace or something. Faggot.

    I like it.

Attention-being on a major label is just that. If you want underground go down to the local college pub and have fun. Enjoy the fact that you and three of your friends are the only people to know that a band even exists. Invite them over for karaoke but for fucks sake get the fuck over your favorite band from years past going out into the world and making a big album. Does it make you feel good to be so super in. The elitism is just the same as some fucking jocks on the high school football team.

I don't know much about this band you are talking about, but if you want to talk about a band on a major label that stands for something, look no farther than Yellowcard. Their last one didn't get much label support, their guitarist (Ben) left, it was a rough time in the Yellowcard camp. Fans like me and other people on music boards like this stood by the band and eagerly wait for the new CD to rock us back to better times when Yellowcard was on TRL and headling Warped. Lightening can strike twice and I'm hoping for good things for Yellowcard's newest release!

"The sad thing is a lot of people are going to say it sucks because they are now on a major label and the cool thing is to rebel against that"

Hmmm, well thats great an' all....But one reason I started liking punk music was because it didn't rely on the corporate majors, it relied on the people.
If this didn't matter to me, I would have continued to lap up the crap that most majors put out and would not have heard against me! or other such bands in the first place.

    So....In reference to your statement...

The reason I started liking independent music, (obviously, first and foremost was because it was good) but it was, as I said independent. It was something that in a fucked up corporate world that proved you didn't need to spend $3million on a video. You actually 'worked' to get your music heard and it worked! Don't get me wrong...some of my favourite bands are/were on majors...

Weezer, Alkaline Trio, Flaming Lips, Jawbreaker, Butthole Surfers,The replacements, Samiam......

So no, I don't - not - like agaisnt me! because they are on a major - it makes no difference. I actually don't like them because they were so anti-major....It makes them liars. It makes everything they stood for bullshit. It makes music that I used to love a joke....because they are a joke.

New wave is a crap album, that resembles nothing of the old against me!....Which, is....first and foremost why I have no time for them anymore. They aren't what I thought they were.

I'm 22 dude, I have a kid. I live with my girlfriend. I am at University. I have a job. I have many hobbies. I have never ranted about a band 'selling-out' before. But against me well......

No...totally man, I don't take it all that seriously, but in 4 years I have been to 3 against me! gigs, bought a t-shirt, hoodie and bought 7 cds by them...It kina pisses me off that that was £150 ($300) wasted on a band that doesn't deserve it.

I don't think, "awww remember that against me! gig when they were punk and made good music, those were some fun times"

"remember that money i wasted on a band that was full of shit and made me actually think that they believed in what they were doing...boy! am i stupid"

I realised i didn't address the musical quality of "new wave" in my review. That is because after two listens i was already sick of the overproduced sound and over-repeated choruses and lack of any substance whatsoever....(I could go on....)
    I didn't buy it...I downloaded it.
    I am glad I did.

Whats funny is that 4 years ago I got a bunch of mates to come to their gig in Glasgow and they loved it and have loved against me! since....and if any of them even considers buying this album i will give them my burned copy before they even consider it...just to let them hear how shit it is.

Thrash Unreal and Ocean are two of the best songs AM! has ever written, musically and lyrically. Some of the writing here isn't very good, but a majority of it is on par with their old stuff. Just because they aren't singing about anarchism and community anymore doesn't mean the lyrics can't be empowering.

    2. The best stuff from this album, mainly "Thrash Unreal", Up The Kuts", and "Born On The FM Waves Of A Heart", sound more reminiscent of Searching For A Former Clarity than anything from the first two albums. If you exiled them after Searching, you really have no business passionately bashing a band you lost interest in, apparently vehementy, two years ago. It's not Reinventing, it's not Cowboy. It's New Wave. Don't hate it for what it's not. If you're gonna hate it for what it is, listen to it first.

I loved Searching For A Former Clarity I still can't really stand the album,. Of the songs you mentioned only "Up The Cuts" really sounds like anything from SFAFC and is great. "Thrash Unreal" is the only song on the album that really takes and developes their newer dancier sound they developed, which is promising. "Borne On The FM Waves" goes absolutely nowhere.

I'm still not convinced a 10 song album that has two of the bands worst songs in "Stop" and "Animal", a song that is filler (which the band has never had on their other releases) in "Piss" and a re-recorded song that sounds really out of place in "Americans Abroad" can be considered worthwhile or anywhere near their best. Thats half the fucking album basically. All deplorable politics aside, the band still could release another amazing album, this just isn't very good.

    My Score:

I'm prepared to get slammed, it's not like cynicism isn't in the air of Against Me! threads. But I don't know if I've met a previous fan yet who didn't cite how "un-AM!" this album is. Where the HELL are you all coming from? HIt me with your "it sure ain't no We Laugh At Danger" and "I just can't get into it, it's just not Re-inventing Axl Rose." Three full-lengths, a number of demo's and ep's, a DVD. It's a wonder how any of you who discredited the band for this album didn't jump ship two years ago. The following is a list of why this was coming, and why you honestly deserve to have your awareness checked.

    1. It's called New Wave. The change was implied. I don't know what kind of further advanced warning system you would have liked to have received, but this was kind of the nail in the coffin regarding the sound change.

    3. I don't know what band this sounds like if not only Against Me! Granted, Ocean is long winded and kind of underwhelming, and Animal is honestly some Uber-produced radio crap that I won't be surprised to hear played after the newest Korn single, but most of this is the same basic sound, the same band, the same ideals. Don't laugh at that. Piss And Vinegar may be absolute filler, but the lineup of the second, third, and fourth tracks is strong. To everyone who's argument was " it's not that I hate it, it's just that it's not against me!", have fun on your bandwagon and lack of oxygen.

4.Please, please get over all of this. The release date has passed, and even if we have yet to really see what effect this album is going to have, it didn't kill you because it wasn't "Crime". If they make Crime, pt. 2, I'll bumrush your asses to get to it, but until then, let's all want everyone to know that this album is just a moment in time for a band who had to have been overwhelmed, and never meant to do anything to hurt YOU. They didn't get here by ignoring what got them here. They got lucky, they are talented and they wrote a batch of songs that's about 40/60. But 40% is pretty genuinely amazing in my book, and the other 60% is harmless and won't come stab you in the back in the night.

I like this album because the stuff that IS good, is solid. I can hit repeat, back, and when I need to, skip. So can you. The fanboy debate has gone on for ages, but pissing and moaning on message boards gets you about as far as you've gotten so far. It's radio ready, still relevant, still politcal, now sans-punk rock that I like more than most things I've ever heard on a local station. If they blow up, at least them and not nu-metal powerhouse #X139-J. And if you wish them genuine malice, keep praying, Anti-Flag faded from the major spotlight pretty quickly. I, personally would love to see a band who I've devoted real listening time to be able to reach some people who would never have passed a glance at them before. I had honest dread in my heart coming into this album. It wasn't even close to as bad as it could have been. And hey, at least you Still have Jawbreaker. Blake never sold out.

I heard Thrash Unreal on Conan today. Sucks its considered the best song on the album, cause I thought it was merely "pretty good". I don't think I'll be getting this.

Score is for the havoc that this review unleashed on the 'org.

Seeing as nothing gets the org community together like an Against Me! story - a review at that - I'd like to ask the following question:

WHERE IS SUPERDUDE? Where ya been man?

I'm sure he'd offer 3 ways to make this review better.

"The lyrics on "New Wave" are just as thought-provoking and empowering as they were on their other records"

ignore the thick cunt - it makes perfect sense to everyone apart from recordtheory

Meh, this CD is hit and miss for me right now. "White People for Peace" might be my new favorite AM! song, and "Stop" might be my least favorite.

But, when clarity came out, i was bummed out, but I grew to love that CD. I will have to wait and see if the same goes for this one.

AM! is one of those live bands. Everyone one of the songs from this album are going to be great live. The ones that I have heard already kicked ass, and now it will be even better to actually know each song as they are playing them.

    My Score:

this band has always blown since it's conception. this album only proves to me that there are a significant amount of morons in this world that accept a singer who sounds like someone took a shit down his throat as talented, and music that can't even live up to the crappy singing. with a name like against me!, it's no wonder why this band feels at the brunt end of an attack. they suck ass and there's no saving that. it's sad what people accept as talent these days. LONG LIVE MC HAMMER

The second half of the album is hot trash.
Score's for people who take themselves too seriously when discussing an anarcho-punk band signed to a major.

Warren Kinsella, a liberal political strategist in Canada offered up his thoughts on the new album, I can't really say that i agree with his conclusions but i think that some of you should check it out, http://www.warrenkinsella.com/musings.htm

I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but looking at Justin's other reviews it appears as though he's a pretty tough grader. Lotsa low ratings for other records as well. His highest rating? For a Moneybrother record on Sabot, a label closely tied with AM! This whole biased reviewer thing just doesn't hold water, so quit being mean little bastards. As Fuzzy he even gave LTJ, one of his favorite bands a 2/5 as well. He's gonna be the kind of father that that cuts his own kid from the soccer team.

    My Score:

I think the album is good. The thing that irritates the most about it is that there are only 10 songs. Most of them are pretty good, but couldn't they at least throw 2-4 more songs on there. i don't even care if they are bad.

Posted by skanknsmile on 2007-07-12 00:00:27

I think my biggest qualm with this record is that I was so desperate for answers from them and I feel like I didn't get them all. The songs...yes they are solid and this is a rock record. A good rock record. But we are all drifters looking for some redemption in four guys who seemed to know where to get the answers from. I know they are trying to get us away from thinking they are all-knowing beings of punk rock redemption, but I wanted more, needed more. Hopefully, we can find them on our own now.

They had SFAFC at wal*mart when it came out. That was pretty much game, set and match. However, I do have hope that eventually this band will become okay again.

I'm sorry. Let me rephrase that. *does deserve negative stars.*

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at 11:04 PM (EDT)

I'm really glad this got two stars, to be honest. I'm sick of the positive reviews on here. That Poet's Life bullshit Timothy Armstrong put out doesn't deserves negative stars. Actually, that should be a choice on the album score feature: NEGATIVE STARS.

I gave this album an 8 out of 10. I don't think we can be mad, they told us upfront what this was going to be. It's not my favourite album, but its still worth listening to.
I think we all have to go back to Tom from Universal Records in "we're Never Going Home" were he says he wanted to sign Against Me! because they were different, so there change in sound obviously has no connection to them signing to bigger labels

Posted by thepuglife on 2007-07-11 21:39:51

i wish they would just announce the release date of their next album so we can start the countdown.

    surely they will bounce back?

"First off I’m calling shenanigans on this comment. Read a couple of the previous Against Me! threads they are full of the whole “ZOMG! This isn’t anarcho folk-punk ANARKY!!!” statements."

Show me some of these then. If anything, people are criticizing Against Me's politics, not the fact they're not playing folk-punk anymore. People have had multiple albums to get used to the non-folk-punk idea. In this review, the majority of the criticisms are being based around the bland, shitty nature of the music itself, and not because it's not folk-punk and not because they're no longer anarchists.

"Your putting words in my mouth, I never said “punk fans” couldn’t understand the album, rather they wouldn’t give it a chance and listen to it with an open mind. Punk has some of the most obnoxious, self-absorbed and closed minded fans on the planet, which fear anything that even approaches change."

I'm putting words in your mouth, but then you clarify what you said by essentially restating what I wrote? Okay, so you may not quite think that punk fans can't understand it, but you do think that they're too "obnoxious, self-absorbed and closed minded" to want to get it. Either way, what you're basically saying is that punk fans are too stupid to appreciate this album.

I would agree that punk has some of the most idiotic fans of any music genre, but most of the anti-New Wave crowd in this review's comments have been pretty reasonable. I'd imagine that it's a pretty safe bet that a considerable number of them listen to a wide variety of music, not just punk. Is it really that implausible that some people just don't like the album at all, plain and simple?

"And furthermore way to post Anonymously too *thumbs up*"

I have no real interest in making an account just so that the occasional time when I post on a news story, my words can be attributed to some trivial username. Besides, you're only one SLIGHT step less anonymous than I am - having a username/profile that tells next to nothing about you is hardly different from posting anonymously.

First off I’m calling shenanigans on this comment. Read a couple of the previous Against Me! threads they are full of the whole “ZOMG! This isn’t anarcho folk-punk ANARKY!!!” statements.

”As such, it's not like punk fans somehow can't understand the album, so your smugness and condescension is both undeserved and embarrassing.”

Your putting words in my mouth, I never said “punk fans” couldn’t understand the album, rather they wouldn’t give it a chance and listen to it with an open mind. My Score:

I've been listening to this album over and over again, and I've been a fan of this band since "Reinventing Axl Rose", but I first saw them live when they released "Eternal Cowboy" - this was when I could see them here in Germany for the first time. Since them I visited every gig they played around here.
Personally, I think that the AM!'s music itself, or the genre, was never that important, as their most striking characteristic is Tom's voice and his incredible vocal lines everybody wants to sing along to (as to be witnessed on probably every single concert they play). Their style or genre doesn't matter to me, I even liked the remix of WPFP with that "electronic" feeling to it. Proves that it's a well written song that just works in every way.

The lyrics on "New Wave" are just as thought-provoking and empowering as they were on their other records and the recording sound fits well into their ongoing development. I know there are bands
