Dan Vapid's probably close to having an aneurysm his brain has hurt for so many years, but with every passing migraine has come another solid batch of three-to-four-chord pop-punk tunes with his band, the Methadones. This particular headache must be a doozy despite its title of denial -- This Won't Hurt... is the Methadones' best proper full-length since 2003's Career Objective.

After taking a break from writing original material (though the band’s more vicious critics might ask “When were they writing original material?”) with last year's covers collection, 21st Century Power Pop Riot, the Methadones return with This Won’t Hurt..., which really doesn’t sound all that different from their previous efforts. That being said, they haven’t worn out their ability to write catchy and enjoyable pop-punk songs, like the mid-tempo “Poor Little Rich Girl,” and one of the album’s more incessant, brash, and energetic numbers, “Turning Up the Noise.” There’s even a heartfelt acoustic number in “I Believe.”

In the band’s defense, by this album it feels like they’ve developed their own identity beyond the always well-founded comparisons to Screeching Weasel, Vapid’s former band. It’s odd; the Methadones haven't necessarily progressed terribly far beyond their old selves, but there have been enough subtle changes through the years to finally call them unique: There’s Vapid’s familiar voice, bouncing mid-paced chords and the occasional call-and-response burst (without the actual response).

This Won’t Hurt... is also shorter than 2004’s Not Economically Viable (the album it’s properly following up) by seven or eight minutes. Viable did feel a little bloated at its 40-minute or so running time, so This Won’t Hurt...’s relative brevity definitely proves to be a selling point.

The Methadones deliver yet another well-rounded effort with their proper Red Scare debut that any fan of the band would do well to invest in.

    My Score:

Just got this. Awesome stuff. It needs to dig it's way under my skin a bit more, but I can see this being almost if not actually as good as Not Economically Viable.

I finally got this album today. It's so good, I have to have listened to it five or six times in a row.

    1. Washed up Avail ripoffs will sell better. Doesn't mean they are better, but still.
    2. This album is quickly becoming my favorite Methadones album.
    3. I think the cover art is tits.

    Toby,

Please put out the new Nerf Herder album. Fat somehow thinks washed up Avail ripoffs will sell better.

    My Score:

I have not heard any of their releases except for career objectives; in which I fell totally in love with. I felt it was an original pop punk album. This release is a wonderful pop punk album. As I am a little older now I appreciate Vapid's recognition that punk is not what it used to be and we don't understand what's happening. It hurts. I relate with just about every song he has written with the methadones from which I have heard will continue to listen and support the methadones after hearing this great release.

    My Score:

I really like this album. It has really grown on me and I cannot get a couple of these songs out of my f'in head. But, the album cover could have been cooler.

This album totally snuck up on me, which is weird considering how much I liked their first one. I'll definitely pick this up soon though.

    My Score:

This is The Methadones' best release yet. Its deceptively catchy and addictive as all hell to listen to. This is one of the better pop-punk releases this year.

Would you call this album more of a move towards power pop? I haven't listened to it yet, but I greatly admired their dedication to the power pop genre as of late, especially their tribute to The Records ("Starry Eyes").

i want to love this record, but some of the songs seem to drag, and that kind of ruins the feel for me.

Great band. This is my favorite album by them so far.

It's a good album, although I doubt that they will ever be able to outdo "Ill at Ease", which is definitely in my top 20. It seems that I like each new album slightly less than the previous one, but they're all good.

Diggin the record, but i'm still of the like-the-first-two-LPs-the-best camp.

I agree with Toby. Not Economically Viable blew Career Objective away. This album is good. It's a lot more liad back than their old stuff, more melancholy. It's much more of a grower than NEV, but I expect to find new things in this album for a long time. It's also, by far, their most original album. They've really found a niche that they can call their own.

    My Score:

this band can be compared to brian ching. they have previous championship experience (SW). They are constantly solid in their releases and always on the fringes of being great yet, like Ching, they are lacking the final support and necessary experience to break it on the national scene. This can also be attributed to injuries/lack of support (lack of touring/being constantly compared to SW). My only complaint is the cover, as NEV had much better artwork (the Dynamo have terrible uniforms?)

thanks for the update toby. i thought the record was being recorded at the blasting room this month? is it being recorded and mixed next month? anyway, you rule. tbr news is good news.

    My Score:

Nice review Brian, you know yoru stuff. He implies that "Career Objectives" is better than "NEV" and I couldn't disagree more. "NEV" was a major breakthrough for this band. As for a TBR update...they got 16 songs that are hopefully gonna be tracked this August. If all goes well I can get it to ya by year's end. Hooray!

I was kind of dissapointed in this at first because Not Economically Viable is such an amazing album but this album is still very solid and extremely enjoyable.

The Methadones can do no wrong in my eyes.

"Not Economically Viable" is a total classic in my eyes. Fantastic record.

    My Score:

i love this album but i was slightly disappointed. not economically.. seemed to have its own 50's feel to it that made it more unique while this album is more straightforward
