Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

I've always felt like Aiden caught a lot more flack for their image, for their age -- for just being Aiden -- than they have for their music. While far from pioneering anything remotely inventive, the bulk of Aiden's earlier work was not too far removed from skatepunk-influenced goth like Love Equals Death with a technically lacking shade of Strung Out and Rufio mixed in (take "Enjoy the View" off the band's Victory debut, Nightmare Anatomy, or the shamefully catchy "Die Romantic" as evidence). However, the music on Conviction resembles none of the above, and unfortunately for Aiden has supplied cynics with a legitimate reason to tarnish their name.

Conviction sounds like it was ruined by producer Jerry Finn in the same way he pushed the goth-punk of Alkaline Trio's Crimson and Tiger Army's Music from Regions Beyond in the wrong directions, with an oversaturation of hi-hats and bass drum kicks. But Conviction wasn't produced by Jerry Finn. And whoever decided Aiden should go for the Joy Division / Cure sound should probably reassess their confidence in dispensing ideas.

Quite possibly the biggest problem with Conviction is that more than half of the 11 songs seem to be filler, or at least of disposable quality. The dull two-minute, piano-and-vocals intro track "The Opening Departure" unfortunately sets the tone for the album, which rarely rises above a listless drone. "She Will Love You" opens with a sterile dance beat uncomfortably close to Tiger Army's "Prelude: Signal Return," but unlike Tiger Army's, fails to explode with energy, instead pushing the torpid rhythm through over four minutes of boredom-induced agony. While one of the best tracks on the album, "Teenage Queen" is severely out of place on Conviction and probably exists solely to entice middle-school aged girls into scrawling the title's words onto their binders and notebooks, or more ambitiously changing their MySpace headlines to match. "One Love" is also a fairly decent pop-rock song that may find its way to your local radio waves if stations aren't boycotting Victory for their supposed mistreatment of radio-rock darlings Hawthorne Heights.

For the most part, it seems as if Aiden pinpointed their one strength (energy), and decided to wipe it out entirely in songs like "Hurt Me," "Moment" and "Darkness." In fact, the record's final three songs, "Believe," "Bliss" and "The Sky Is Falling" have to be one of the most boring conclusions on any record in recent years. The solitary song on Conviction that even comes close to packing the punch of the band's earlier work is "Son of Lies," which features Efrem Schulz of Death By Stereo. Don't ask how much they had to pay him to do it, 'cause I don't know.

After two fairly cold (and in my opinion unfair) reviews for Aiden's earlier work on this site, I was hoping to give them a fair shake if they could at least come close to matching Nightmare Anatomy. However, this is not the case; Conviction is a resounding disappointment, and Aiden has certainly earned their score this time.

i love aiden and i doubt its as bad as everyone seems to be saying, i heard some of their songs from the new album and i really like it!! i love their music and their look. i saw them in a little interview and they seemed really nice and i think they should do what feels right for them, regardless of what everyone else thinks!!

    Complete fucking shit.

    My Score:

Bullshit. I can tell just from how you wrote this review that you just skimmed through the tracks in one ten-minute sitting before tossing the CD into your "sell" pile.

and I can tell you tried the same line on Aiden's Rain in Hell review: you only listened to the album by skipping through all of the tracks once before putting the CD in your "take to the used record store for cash" pile..

if you actually took the time to read the review instead of just looking at the score, you'd see that I gave them the benefit of the doubt since their last two reviews didn't look at the positive side of what they were doing. There were 3 decent songs on this album...3 stars. It's not fuzzy mathematics.

    My Score:

Score is for seeing this band live with Silverstein and He is Legend. I had a free ticket and it was still a bad idea. Oh well. They did the split the crowd and make the sides run into each other thing and it was so contrived that it was funny. Unfortunately, it wasn't entertaining enough to merit more than a score of one.

    Posted by PunkNewser1 on 2007-09-01 15:04:15

ok so krid1987, I doubt that you're going to read this, but oh well... so anyway, wow that's pretty funny you would flatter yourself enough to say that your farts sound good enough to get you a record deal... Good luck with that... PS. I'm just so curious what that album cover would look like. : ) No offense. Actually (Even though i'm a FAN of AIDEN, and pretty much think WiL's voice is awesome), I did think that's a clever post, just wish it was directed toward a band where it was justified, but oh well... and just for the record I'm not a "scene" or "emo" kid, oh and please don't tell them to stop making music because some of us like it.

    Posted by PunkNewser1 on 2007-09-01 14:55:36

Ok so I was reading this article because I wanted to see if there would be any interesting info. about the new album or the band, who in my opinion is amazing; however, i was more than disappointed to see what everyone had to say about the band. I don't mean to offend anyone else on here who is simply sharing their opinions too, but for those who are WAY harsh about their critiques, I think you should lighten up a bit. I have listened to all of the Nightmare Anatomy (and by "listened to" I mean I "listen" to them, not just heard them like once or twice), as well as the new Conviction album, and they are both good, actually great, in my opinion. Also, what I think is great about them is that they don't just write stuff to make everyone happy, they (or WiL) write about real things and events in their lives, which gives the music an "honest" (for lack of better word) appeal. Also, as far as the sound being different goes... (if you care anything about the band/music) WiL has said that for them it is really hard to write the same album twice, because if you think about it they play those same songs over and over on tour and to have the exact same sound again and again would be really boring for them. I'm sure all of those people who complaim about emos and getting to upset about defending music, etc. I'm not trying to get you all upset, and I'm not trying to say that because I like their music you should too, but just thought I'd share my thoughts on the subject since everyone who is against them was. Oh... and for the record, I'm not an emo person and I do understand how the "emo" trend can be frustrating for some people. Anyway, if you haven't heard the new album for yourself, I'd advise you to check it out at least before you decide how you feel.

PS yeah sorry it's a LONG post but hey.

To be fair, "br00tal" music tends to suck tremendous cock, because it tends to be shitty death metal. Most metal fans I know would say Krisiun is a pretty "brutal" band, but I've never listened to worse music.

Anyways, Aiden blows. Here's a hilarious cover of one of their songs on YouTube. Watch it. I promise that you'll laugh really hard.

at warped 06 my friend was feeling like he was going to pass out. so he was sitting on the fence and i was trying to locate the medical tent. I asked these two guys with eyeliner and face paint all over them selves (drummer bassist of Aiden) where the medical tent. The drummer shrugged and said "im sorry man, i have no clue." he at least felt sympathy for my friend and i. However, the bassist said "Hey dude, check us out at the victory tent at 3:30 and buy our record." i wanted to fucking punch him. WHAT A FUCKING DOUCHE! FUCK THIS BAND!

punkrawkshow: i would, but i haven't heard either one. i'm sure they will get reviews soon though.

this is actually Aiden's best CD.

If they didnt basically rewrite the same song eleven times or write a rather boring album, it could actually be okay.

A terrible band, making bad music for dumb people! Why do you even waste the time to review this garbage?

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 8:02 PM (EDT)

the fact that one love is one of the better songs on this should tell you something.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 8:00 PM (EDT)

Did someone really just say that "One Love" was decent? Are you fucking kidding me!? That song is vulgar. I was at a party this weekend and some guy got into an argument trying to defend Aiden because they "put on a good show." My buddy offered the obvious in accusing the band of being unoriginal. The Aiden fanboy got all flustered and ended up spouting off with something like "it's just music, who care about originality!"
Yuck. Even casually arguing over a band so worthless felt like we were giving them too much respect. Fuck these guys and everything else at the bottom of the barrel.
