It's time for another review of a rap record on Punknews. If the ensuing thread turns out even half as entertaining as the one for 36 Chambers, the world/Internet will have become a better place. This site is definitely in need of another of these anyway so we can all see how this isn't "rapnews.blackpeople" or something like that. But enough about the possible hilarity of future comments from the morons that read this site. What’s important is that Hell Hath No Fury is closer to a punk record than at the very least 50% of the stuff that’s been reviewed lately. You can't honestly say that selling crack on street corners at all hours of the night isn't more punk than hopping a train with your parents' credit card in your shoe.

You could think to yourself “What’s punk about bragging about jewelry and women?” and the answer would be, “Not a whole lot.” But Hell Hath No Fury is not like that. If anything, it’s a tribute to reaching personal enlightenment and the DIY ethic. I mean really, look at this:

The black Martha Stewart
Let me show you how to do it!
Break down pies to pieces
Make cocaine quiches
- from "Ride Around Shining"

You don’t get much closer to DIY than Martha Stewart, and you don’t get much more punk than talking about how much you "don’t fear Tubs and Crockett” like on “Momma I’m Sorry.” They might as well be on Profane Existence or something.

The Neptunes handle all of the production duties here, and assuming you know anything about anything, you’re stoked. They provide pretty much the perfect musical soundscape for brother Malice and Pusha T to put their clever raps over. From “Wamp Wamp"’s steel drums with Slim Thug on the hook (which you know sounds good if you heard the severely overlooked “Already Platinum”) and the dark keyboards of the almost scary “Chinese New Year” (“make niggas kick that can / fall victim to the Click Clack Clan”), to the futuristic-sounding first single “Mr. Me Too,” the Neptunes have put out some of their best beats in a good while.

The raps though, that’s what you come to a Clipse record for. And shit is totally top notch. Whether acknowledging the label problems with the release of the album (“I'm sorry to the fans but them crackers weren't playing fair at Jive” [Mr. Me Too]) or, well, it’s pretty obvious what’s going on in “Chinese New Year”:
I’m at you door / your eyes are like 'Why are you here?' / judging by my steel I got something to do here / give up the money or the angel cries two tears / front of your crib sounding like Chinese New Year
Mask on face / glock in hand / I was in and out of homes like the Orkin Man
Awesome. Really the only problem with the song is the last weed-carrier verse. So unnecessary. "Nightmares" rules, despite not really living up to the hype for it, but it's still epic and a perfect end for the record.

It's nigh hip-hop perfection for 2006. There's no reason not to love it.

    t-t-t-totally, dude!

Good to see that Little Brother album mentioned. That shit slapped rap music in the face, except nobody who should have taken notice actually did. It's tragic. I think it's even harder to sell music as a true-school hip-hop artist than it is as a punk band. The fact that complete and utter fucking garbage like "Party Like A Rock Star" is the most popular shit out right now makes me to continue to have no faith in the brains of 85% of my fellow humans.

    My Score:

Entertaining review, awesome album. It's my driving record when I take long journeys - this and Little Brother's "The Minstrel Show".

And ibitchslappedyourmama, I kinda agree with you on Papoose. I mean, on one hand, he's a good rapper but, seriously, I cannot remember any of his songs when push comes to shove.

If the folks who are regular to this site are such "morons", why would you bother to post it here in the first place??? Vanity? Chuckling at your own genious? Nothing better to do? I'll admit...I'm bored, and have have nothing better to do than take your bait!

Here's the overall truth about your moronic review:
This is dumb mainstream hip-hop, you ate up something that the frat-goons over at Pitchfork gave a 9 to, This has nothing to do with race or hip-hop not being punk, the rhymes are neither clever nor funny, and best of all Zomba is an offshoot of Jive...way to get out of that one dummies!

Posted by punkgato on 2007-09-03 23:34:48

Public Enemy, Immortal Technique, Sage Francis, Dead Prez and The Coup are punk...This is stupid bullshit...period!

And why would you print a review from last November(...and the world was tired of Pharrell and Chad then too, where do you live Wyoming?) of nonsense like this when there are ACTUAL punk records(really fucking good ones too!) that you dorks still haven't reviewed...editorial content anyone???

Posted by Archangel on 2007-09-03 18:48:30

"Is this review ironic? There have been quality rap albums (Wutang) and hiphop that comes close to punk ethically (Sage Francis, Atmosphere) reviewed on this site, and that's great. But what exactly is so "punk" or "cool" with selling drugs, using racial slurs and robbing people at gunpoint? And what's enviable about childish bat/hat/cat rhyme schemes and bumper sticker quality pop-culture references and puns?"

    Quoted for truth.

    wiggedy giggedy.

i haven't listened to this album. nor do i plan on doing so. however, it is shit for the following two reasons:
    1. the album cover is terrible.
    2. this review is an ass kiss.

"And shit is totally top notch."

thinking then writing=good. drinking then writing=bad.

Meh rap album, but for real, get HORSE the band's new one up, along with MxPx before throwing up grunge and rap reviews, hm?

Posted by ibitchslappedyourmama on 2007-09-01 18:16:59

Hmmm, my buddy played this album for me while back and I thought it was OK, but never followed up on it....a few thoughts though
-Neptunes? yawn....yes they're pretty talented but the beats are so commercial, it hurts. Pharell annoys the shit outta me, too.

-Icapped2pac: I agree wholeheartedly with your last paragraph...I have been listening to a lot of 'underground' mc's and groups from the mid to late ninties, mostly because a lot of what is being put out today hasn't been able to keep my attention. That being said, there still is some good shit coming out today, but it doesnt compare to black hip-hop artists, as you say, from the past.
On another note, Talib Kweli will always be the shit. I first heard him on Lyricist Lounge vol 1. Comps like that and Soundbombing 1 and 2 got me really digging deeper into groups that were featured on those. Late nineties-NY underground hip hop was basically what it was, I guess.
Lately though, I have really been digging new shit like Blue Scholars, Kidz in the Hall(best shit out now), Panacea, Procussions(as you can see anything from the 'new' Rawkus i enjoy, no matter how much El-P hates them, and maybe for good reason),People Under the Stairs, Lupe Fiasco, Immortal T., Cage and so on..

Oh and for favorite rap lyrics? look no further than big l, or more recently, papoose. He's the best.
"I wont con you for a gun, but I'll con you for some yay in a sec, Not a con artist, but I Con Yay, like West."

"Son won't come around the 'hood , cuz he know that I'ma hurt him...I stop son from coming in like curtains"

this is honestly the dumbest thing I have EVER heard ANYONE say EVER! And the entire universe is OVER the Neptunes weak beats and phoney skaterisms! This is about as punk as Avril Lavigne produced by the Matrix!

Posted by moneenerd on 2007-09-01 13:18:42

Like, whats so punk rock about the glorification of cocaine and crack? Cuz thats pretty much all the CLIPSE do.

    My Score:

I love the Clipse too but....

You know its a slow news/review week when there's a CLIPSE and JANE'S ADDICTION review on PunkNews

Posted by brown on 2007-09-01 12:34:59

I like clipse and all, but I felt this review tried too hard to justify itself in a "Hey guys, i know this is hip hop, but look how many ways I can relate it to punk!" sort of way.

"When wast he last time you listening to They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y) by Pete Rock and CL Smooth? All-tiome classic."

Not too long ago. A couple months maybe. I think those two LPs fall into the same traps a lot of good 90's records did by being way too long. Like, I think "Stunts, Blunts, and Hip-Hop" is a ridiculously underrated and underappreciate record, but I never ever listen to it because it's so goddamn long.

"would half the people be all over this album if pitchfork didn't hype the shit out of it?"

I'd like to think so. I mean, I don't know about the rest of the world's Clipse fans, but I personally couldn't care less about what Pitchfork has to say about anything.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, August 31, 2007 at 10:39 PM (EDT)

this band is INSANELY over-rated. yeah, the production is phenomenal, i will give it that. but really pharel is all these guys have going for them. i think the rhymes are pretty good at best, nothing spectacular. and EVERY goddamn song is about money and selling coke. it's fucking tiresome.

would half the people be all over this album if pitchfork didn't hype the shit out of it?

Posted by branden on 2007-08-31 22:38:59

i've been meaning to listen to this for a while, but i honestly have a lot of trouble getting into hip hop that is not wu tang affiliated.

    favorite rap lines anybody?

Nothing coming from Stones Throw or Def Jux camps will ever top this record.

Posted by maxethunders on 2007-08-31 22:23:28

Clipse is alright musically and lyrically styled but it gets boring with every song being about selling coke.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, August 31, 2007 at 10:10 PM (EDT)

I'll add to the list of Hip Hop that is better than Clipse.
Brother Ali (listen to Forest Whitaker and Walkin Away two of the best hip hop songs ever), Asamov, Sweatshop Union( How can we be free when the water we drink is owned by some company), Immortal Technique, Lifesavas, Zion I, Living Legends, Solillaquists of sound, AZ, Rakim, Little Brother, KRS One, De La SOul (respect is my new jam), Asamov, Blue Scholars. I love good hip hop and Clipse is not a part of it.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, August 31, 2007 at 9:51 PM (EDT)

    Old stuff was better

Posted by Luzzew on 2007-08-31 21:49:42

    @Icapped2pac:

Good comment (though the new Common is shit. He'll never top Resurrection in my eyes). There is so much good hip hop out there that people either don't seek out or don't want to listen to. It's just like punk music, the shit you hear on the radio isn't what it's all about. Check out artists like the aforementioned Murs, Wu-Tang Clan, Mos Def (or better yet, Blackstar's one album), Pharoahe Monch, NWA, older Ice Cube, Vakill, Oh No (Madlib's brother), or almost anyone else on Stones Throw for that matter.

I used to be a pretty pigeonholed guy, listening to shitty pop punk all the time, but I'll tell you, at this point, I probably listen to more hip hop than anything else. It's just some of the best music out there these days.

DJ Premier seriously regulates neptunes. That classic beat is oranges.

    Posted by Icapped2pac on 2007-08-31 21:29:12

Yawwwwn. These guys aren't terrible, and I get that they're different, but I can't be bothered to listen to more than a few songs. That's mostly due to the beats, really... to me, the Neptunes are pop producers, not beatsmiths like DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre (well, he used to be), Insight, 9th Wonder... I could go on and on.

On that note, I would recommend Project Move, Raheem Jamal, Sound Providers, Edgar Allen Floe.... Masta Ace's last 2 albums were great, Kweli's and Common's new ones are good, and Percee P is about to drop an album entirely produced by Madlib which sounds so sweet I almost kept the voice-over promo mp3s.

And while I'm spilling my unsolicited thoughts on hip-hop, I gotta say how sick I am of talking to/seeing myspace pages/reading posts by kids who are into Aesop Rock and Atmosphere but don't listen to any black hip-hop artists and have no idea who KRS-One or Rakim are (no doubt the guys whom Aesop and Slug probably idolized when growing up). Take a listen to "And This Is For" by Slug's sometime partner Murs, off his "Murs 3:16" album if you don't get where I'm coming from. I just wish "the kids" were a little more open and aware to what else is out there, and I don't want to see hip-hop inevitably go the way of rock and roll.

"The Neptunes handle all of the production duties here, and assuming you know anything about anything, you’re stoked."

LOL, you have to be kidding. Way to buy into the Neptunes hype dude. There really is nothing special about their production.
