A lot of you are familiar with Every Time I Die, for better or worse, for love or hatred. So with that out of the way, let me say that as much as I like punk rock and metal, I have always been a sucker for riffing rock and roll. Any band that incorporates it into their sound will have my attention for a least a bit, and if they're actually good at utilizing it in their sound, an eternity. The signs were there for Every Time I Die to fall into this category for me ever since "I've Been Gone a Long Time" from Hot Damn!. It became more prevalent on 2005's Gutter Phenomenon to the point of it removing the "core" from their "metal" in many listeners' minds. The Big Dirty is the next step in Every Time I Die's musical evolution and it couldn't be any more gratifying for a fan of rock music.

The dual guitar attack of Andy Williams and Jordan Buckley is far from being technically mind-blowing, but it's FUN. Big metallic rock riffs dominate this entire album, in some songs more so than others ("INRIhab," "We'rewolf," "Rendez-voodoo," "Buffalo Gals"), yet the heaviness that branded them as a "metalcore" band to begin with is still present in every song. Songs like "Cities and Years" and "A Gentleman's Sport" are among the heaviest tunes the band has ever crafted while songs such as "No Son of Mine," "Rebel Without Applause" and "Depressionista" barrel along at the break-neck guitar speed that the band has always incorporated into their sound. Williams and Buckley have refined and further perfected the guitars on this record and shown that Every Time I Die is a beast that shows no sign of slowing down. Similarly, Mike Novak's drumming has only grown more impressive with time, his abilities laying a solid foundation for the rest of the band to work on and additionally going above and beyond himself throughout the course of the album.

Vocalist Keith Buckley's voice has also become much stronger in all aspects. His growling yell packs more punch than ever before while his actual singing abilities are surpisingly clear and vivacious, even recalling Glassjaw's Daryl Palumbo on "Leatherneck." His usual tongue-in-cheek lyrics are evident as always on every song and continue being an important part of the Every Time I Die equation.

All in all, this album is an incredible step up in the prowess of the band and proves that they are a pillar of modern metal (just ask Brian Posehn). If it's not your sort of thing, take a clue from the slam-dancers and moan about the lack of breakdowns while missing out on all the fun.

    My Score:

best album of the year so far. this is a band that has finally found their niche, and as long as they continue to put songs out like these or from gutter phenomenon i will always like anything they feed me. i've liked them ever since their conception, but the earlier albums were hard on my ears since the recording quality didn't do the songs justice. last night in town and burial plot are easily the most technical and complicated songs they've ever written, but often more times than not this doesn't make a good song/album. this band has evolved tremendously and now has the good production to back up the nicely written songs. every time i die has a talent that most of the bands featured on this website don't. good songwriting ability. they utilize their skills not just for surface-level technicalities, but for finesse. finally a band that has their own sound (although copied somewhat by maylene/he is legend), which is something that most punk or metal bands can't do. and for all the music snobs who only like one of the two aforementioned genres and dis the other, both punk and metal are essentially the same type of music (fast blast beats, power chords, palm muting, etc.). only the notes are different (metal intentively sounding more demonic and punk sounding "happy"). without progress in either genre, the other would be shit. every time i die takes the best aspects of both genres, adds a touch of southern rock, intellegent lyrics, and their own twist, and ends up making one of the best albums to come out recently.

"Also, the dvd that comes with it proves once again that they are just as good at making dvds that are fun and kick ass as they are at making cds that are fun and kick ass."

Agreed. I couldn't believe how long, comprehensive and funny that DVD was. The whole bit with Keith writing lyrics was hysterical, and watching Andy shovel eight tacos in a row into his mouth is a lot funnier than it sounds.

The more I listen to this cd the more ass it kicks, probably my favorite stuff by them. Also, the dvd that comes with it proves once again that they are just as good at making dvds that are fun and kick ass as they are at making cds that are fun and kick ass.

I have to take it down a half-star after another listen. It's good, but even at 34 minutes gets a little white noisy at times.

    1. Hot Damn!
    2. Last Night in Town
    3. The Big Dirty
    4. Gutter Phenomenon

to clear up what I was saying, I didn't really mean there weren't any breakdowns on this album, it just seems as though they are far less prominent than on say their first EP and two albums, Gutter Phenomen was a step in this direction and it has just been further refined into a more metal, less hardcore album .

    Posted by thus_spoke_sean on 2007-10-05 16:01:24

Spelling errors aside, have you actually listened to this album? The breakdowns comment doesn't even make sense, as more then half the songs in the album have multiple huge breakdowns in them. Songwriting wise, this is probably their most solid effort, I still favor Last Night In Town over anything else they have done though.

yes, I know i spell stuff wrong and have bad grammer, i really don't care, it's the internet, im not here to impress.

as far as the breakdown comment goes, it was in reference to the reviewer implying that the main reason fans wouldn't like this release is the 'lack' of them. there are some in the album, and honestly, they are pertty good too.

yes, i have listened to the album multiple times (as i stated in my first comment).

you think this is good song writing, i don't. here unfortunately, we will simply have to disagree, I'm glad you like it, and I would be much happier if I did too.

I completely agree with this. Hot Damn! is still my favorite but I love GP and this because their sound turned into something awesome and different from everybody else.

great album. to think that this is the same band that made the funeral plot bidding war (which was fun of course!) to something way more professional is quite a step up in musical talents.

    I think this album sucks.

and its not because there aren't any mroe breakdowns. and im fine with the fact style change they have gone through. Within their new style though, I don't think they are writing good songs. Plain and simple.

While there are certinaly some cool riffs here and there, I really think "Rendez-voodoo" is the only song, start to finish, that is well crafted or...."good."

I have also always been a huge ffan of keiths writing, and while his voice has certinaly gotten better, i feel like his lyrics have gotten much worse: "You don't live till you're ready to die, you don't live till you're ready to die, you don't live till you're ready to die!!!!" Really? REALLY?

Call me a hater if you want, but I gave this album plenty of chances, and i just don't like it for what it is.

Didn't really expect to like this. They're not back up to Last Night or Hot Damn! par, but it's a comeback from Gutter.
