Avenged Sevenfold were the bees' knees with a handful of hardcore and metal fans when the band unleashed their seemingly tongue-in-cheek sophomore LP in 2003, Waking the Fallen. The ballads; the `80s hair metal nods; the over-the-top imagery; the terrible Hot Topic-fan-worship music video -- it had to be a bit sardonic, at least...right?. But then the band jumped to Warner shortly after the album's release and put out their major label debut in the form of a third-rate Guns 'N Roses worship collection, alienating 99% of their previous fanbase when we realized they were serious and they simultaneously started proudly flying Republican colors.

Their grandiosely whitespace-covered self-titled album only sends Avenged Sevenfold into more hated territory by the aforementioned, but some of it's rather justified. While Avenged Sevenfold tones down on some of the blatant G'NR nods, it's still full of overly cheesy attempts at M. Shadows' nasal singing/sneering, guitars that, while interesting and complex, aren't nearly as impressive as the one redeeming quality they offered 2005's City of Evil, and mostly forgettable songs blending styles in convoluted manners.

It's not all muck, though. "Almost Easy" has an admittedly enjoyable chorus. "Brompton Cocktail" sounds reminiscent of when the band were at their peak. Opener "Critical Acclaim" comes off mildly vague in its attacks and reeks of weak tough-guy posturing, but the band is rather unapologetic and unabashed in their right-wing stance ("self-righteousness is wearing thin (lies inside your head your best friend) / heart bleeds but not for fellow men (broken glass your reflection) / I've had enough / It's time for something real / I don't respect the words you're speaking / gone too far / a clone"). If nothing else, they're standing their ground firmly.

But really, the status quo often is "nothing else." A dramatic string section outpouring on "Afterlife" sounds like a forced attempt at reaching the level of the orchestral metal moments of their influences. "Unbound (The Wild Ride)" dabbles in fluttering piano, a cheeseball gospel choir and one section handled by a child singing; it makes the Clash's Sandinista!-era "Career Opportunities" sound like "Another Brick in the Wall." However, "A Little Piece of Heaven" really takes the cake -- it's an eight-minute carnivallike clusterfuck, full of "dark" strings, Shadows overeager -- albeit diverse -- vocal fronting, random mood swings, choir, a brass section and lots of cringeworthy moments ("I know it's not your time / but bye bye"); it'd be great for a Tim Burton movie, but the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack doesn't get many listens around these parts. Then there's the curveball closer, "Dear God," which rolls by with some country ballad twang; the band's Nickel-backers and trucker contingency might be stoked.

Self-titled albums are supposed to make a statement for bands, but Avenged Sevenfold speak with bizarre ambition and drastic miscues, taking risks with admirable abandon but ultimately failing to make a hard impact.

    My Score:

the only good thing that came from this album was Afterlife's solo, thats about it.

after listening to Diamonds in the Rough, Dancing Dead, Demons, and Until the end would and should have replaced lost, Unbound, and Brompton cocktail.

but hey, i guess well be hearing the hard core come out from them in the next album, Shadows even does it at the end of Demons.

to all those who rag on these guys, just get over it. When they come on you can actually tell who it is.

    My Score:

Okay, I just found this site yesterday and I'm under the opinion this is a site for hardcore and punk bands. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems that any type of band not under that genre is not welcomed and considered as shit. A7X now falls under that category... And it is stupid. Seriously, A7X is a very talented band and they are even my FAVORITE band; IMO they are the best band the world has seen, and this is for City of Evil/Avenged Sevenfold as well (not just Waking the Fallen and Sounding the Seventh Trumpet). As a matter of fact, this album is their second best and is definitely nearly as good as Waking the Fallen. And this is not coming from the mouth of some living-in-the-80's noob, this is coming from someone who doesn't even like much music outside Melodic Death Metal anymore (Scar Symmetry, Dark Tranquillity, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, etc.). When a band like A7X is my favorite considering that (for their new music also!), you know they are talented. Even if you don't like the genre they play, you cannot deny they do well in it. Their members are very talented. I'm hoping they'll add more of a Metalcore influence in their next album. Since Shadows has gone back to screaming during live performances, I think it's possible. Point is, it doesn't matter what genre a band plays...it doesn't mean the band sucks at it, and isn't talented (unless it's Post-Hardcore or Punk rock, as it's nearly impossible to be talented and play one of those two genres).

Dude, you rated an album by Orange as one of your top records. I'm pretty sure you shouldn't even be allowed to comment.

wow, spot on review, I agree with every word and the star review. right on man.

I actually really liked City of Evil and loved Waking the Fallen, but this is just bad. real bad. THe production is the best part, it sounds great...thats teh only compliment I can hand out this time around.

    ohhhh man your serious.

It's funny to listen to how good the guitarists in this band are, only to have them completely waste every inch of talent writing shitty songs and adding in some of the worst vocals ever recorded as well. A7X has always been a really lame band, I really can't believe they got as big as they did.

This album is terrible. I loved Waking the Fallen, and thoroughly enjoyed City of Evil as a guilty pleasure ... but this is complete unlistenable trash.

Posted by ItsAgiftAndAcurse on 2007-12-21 01:48:28

Screaming is terrible. He did himself a favor when he damaged his vocal chords. I love his voice on this album, especially in the song "Gunslinger".

Posted by swarley on 2007-12-20 23:18:47

If I'm not mistaken, M Shadows burst a blood vessel in his neck sometime after Waking the Fallen and he was forced to stop screaming, or possibly burst a blood vessel and die.

So he had two choices, rock out and burst a vessel, choking himself on his own blood onstage and have the best Rock and Roll death of all time, or try to make it without screaming.

I don't think I truly realized the unfortunateness of his decision until i tried to listen to this record...

    Fuck avenged sevenfold

This album is horrible, just like city of evil

They used to be decent, but now they just wanna be a GNR fucking rip off, Same with trivium wanting to be Metallica

Wouldn't be surprised to see them on tour with Hinder and Nickleback, fuck these fags

Didn't anyone catch the influences that they said they'd had to write this record? Some of it really does sound like Korn. Holy mother of God, why in the fucking hell would anyone want to sound even remotely like Korn? This is bad even for A7X, and that's really really REALLY fucking bad.

    My Score:

A sort of like the WIFS circus punk vibe going on in "A Little Piece of Heaven", and one of the other band members does a bit of lead vocals on a few tracks which is a nice break from Shadows' bland warbling, but overall this is outstandingly mediocre.

Posted by sugarfull on 2007-12-19 10:17:33

Oh, god, this does sound like Avenged Sevenfold (who were a terrible band to begin with) caught Tim Burton's strand of Aspergers Syndrome.

I still think Waking the Fallen was a pretty decent album. Getting voice lessons from the same dude who coached Axl Rose and Jessica Simpson definitely turned this band into a shitpile. Some very talented guitarists I will admit.

    Overall, not buying it.
