Words can’t even describe how good this band is. These guys are from Long Island, NY and they are just the secret band that LI just released for the rest of the world to hear. Brand New have such a unique sound which makes them standout more than any other Pop-Punk/Rock bands out there today. The album opens up with "The Shower Scene" which sounds more like a pop-punk song and the same goes with "Jude Law and A Semester Abroad". Jesse’s and Vin’s guitar work on this album are just amazing, it’s simple, but sounds so dynamic.

To call Brand New just another Pop-Punk band won’t do them justice because they play some really catchy straight forward Rock songs such as "Mix Tape" which starts off sounding like a sweet ballad for girlfriend and then out of nowhere the guitars, bass, and drums just explodes into an awesome all out Hard Rock song. The guitar intro to "Failure By Design" is the best guitar line I had ever heard. "Last Chance To Lose Your Keys" is my favorite song on the whole album the chorus and the way the whole song is structured is just awesome. These guys have a lot of melody in their songs such as "The No Seatbelt Song" and "Secondary". Your Favorite Weapon closes the whole chapter with "Soco Amaretto Lim". Not only is the instrumentation perfect, but so are the vocals. The vocals sooths the music so perfectly. The lyrics deal with issues such as love, having broken hearts, girlfrieds and touring on the road. This album is definitely making it on my personal top ten records to had ever been played in my stereo and will continue to do so for years to come.

This record is one of my favourite records i have ever listened ro and dont say i should listen to better music or listen to more! I 23 and have listened to Punk since i was 13. I listen to such bands as OPIV, Rancid, thrice, alakline Trio, Blink 182, The Distillers, The Descendants, Sick of it All, Taking Back Sunday and Green Day!

And people who think Brand New suck are probably little boys and girls who think that drive thru is the best record label ever!

    fuck im cool!:)

I have a really wide range of taste in music and have brought plenty of albums over the years. But coming across Brand New is one of the best things anyone has ever introduced me to. They have the most amazing and well thought out lyrics any band has ever produced and I hope they continue to produce more good music so that people with a good ear for music can enjoy thier music for years to come.

to the poster below me.. here is the explanation: ""The guys pretty much grew up together; they have been friends since the fourth grade. They got older and "a girl came into the picture and they were both a little bit silly" (quote from Adam of TBS) Many people claim that Jesse's girlfriend cheated with John, but neither have ever directly said so. They did not talk to each other for a couple of months, but are good friends today. Each wrote a song about the situation from their point of view, Taking Back Sunday's "There's no "I" in Team" and Brand New's "Seventy Times 7." Brand New wrote the song first, but Taking Back Sunday's CD was released first. In every interview, the guys recommend looking at the lyrics. A close look at the songs will most likely reveal the most detailed description anyone will ever hear. ""

alright... good cd with weak songs (i.e. sudden death..., and the last one soco ameretto or whatever it was called... those are the two songs that pissed me off) plus anyone notice how TBS sing some of "Seventy times Seven" in "There Is No "I" In Team" the whole, "is that what you call tact, you're as subtle as a brick in the small of my back" BOTH BANDS SING IT!!

Man I've seen these guys more than 10 and one of those times I've seen these guys play a rare acaustic instore set at Tower Records here in NY. They're just an awesome live band and great guys to hang out with.

    Anonymous (December 25, 2001)

I just saw these guys live recently and it's the only thing better than the album. Brand New kicks a lot of ass.

    Anonymous (December 21, 2001)

this kind of shit makes me grind my teeth. listen people if I make a song with titles that use words such as mix tape or heartbroken and I throw in an occassional interesting riff here or there then will you all promise to kiss my ass?

The extent of the suck that this band brings cannot be put into words.

actually, Failure By Design sounds nothing like Weezer...
It does, however, remind one of Good Charlotte with the almost rapping talk/singing going on.
Jude Law is a great song, though, and these guysll be big, whether or not you want em too.

    incetardis (December 18, 2001)

i agree that this one is a very good record, and it certainly has some great melodies... i like the dual vocal lines, some of the best out there. but since this is a pop punk album with nothing really special on it, it won't make it into any "album of the year charts". don't get me wrong, it like this stuff, but it's not THAT outstanding - like the latest strike anywhere someone mentioned below.

    Anonymous (December 17, 2001)

What a great band, these guys just know what they're doing and they're a band everyone should keep an eye on.

To the guy below ME, actually not everyone does have opinions. Research in many instances have shown that human beings can supress their opinons and agree to whatever they are told based upon the benefit that comes from doing so. It's ust that in these times, most people - especially in America - have been pampered into believing that their opinions matter and count for something. However, in many cultures, plus a study conducted in Europe in 1992, human being have set aside their opinions, and accepted whatever "truths" were handed to them, providing they were cared for sufficiently. This is why communism should work, the only problem is that the people running the government forget to not have opinins and then they corrupt the whole system. Just thought you might likie to know.

To the person below me...it's called an OPINION. Everyone has one. That guy had one, and judging by your ignorant response, you have one as well.

2nd best album of the year?!?! After Thursday?!?!? You gotta listen to more music bro. Check out the new Strike Anywhere, or Bouncing Souls.

    Anonymous (December 11, 2001)

arghghh.... why does everyone say failure by design sounds like weezer? what weezer song does it sound like....? It sounds nothing like weezer

    Anonymous (December 11, 2001)

is anyone else sick and tired of hearing generic pop punk! These guys are horrible! in the words of american nightmare ... PLEASE DIE ... eat shit fuckers

    Anonymous (December 11, 2001)

Hey skip, "Your Favorite Weapon," is definitely a great album, but you've gone way overboard with the praise. The album would be virtually flawless without the ballads--"Mixtape" and "Soco Amaretto Lim"--which get super boring. Even so, it's the second best record of the year (after "Full Collapse" by Thursday). It's great to find a band that can seemlessley rip off Weezer in "Failure by Design" and Blink in "Secondary" while not sounding too forced (Ahem...The Starting Line).

I notice you say that a lot but where are your versions of these reviews SCOTT?
