Dear GlassPipeMurder,

So, I got my first staff package from Punknews. I was really stoked on it! Do you like writing for the website? I think it’s a neat-o place.

Anyway, the reason why I’m writing is because one of the records I was sent might have been meant for you. It’s called Last Time Again by Lockstep, from Indiana. A yellow note fell out when I opened it, asking if you specifically would be interested in reviewing it. I guess you figured out by now that I didn’t mail it to you. I’m sorry; I’m a dick. But you gotta understand. Last Time Again is pretty gosh dang good, you see.

Self-released on new label Sandinista Records, Lockstep’s biggest influence, the Clash, is apparent before even dropping the needle. And while rehashing The Clash and Give ‘Em Enough Rope might not be the most original style in punk rock, it’s still a tried and true fun one.

Straightforward like the earlier Clash records, or the Ratchets’ output, Lockstep serves up three solid dub-tinged punk songs with a slight tweak. The group uses keyboard/organ throughout all the songs, and while it’s a minimal change, it still makes a huge difference. The reggae moments feel more so, and even the rocking sections are enhanced, calling to mind the clanging punk of the Low Budgets.

All three songs have plenty of hooks to boot. When the band gets into its choruses, it keeps the melodies streamlined so folks can jump in regardless of blood alcohol level (although I'm sure these would be fun to sing drunk). There are gang vocals all over this seven-inch, so I assume the group’s shows are chock full o’ mic swapping. With tunes this dancetastically fun, I intend to find out.

Anyway, GPM, I’ll catch ya on the flipside.

Love,
Jelone.

P.S. – I’m watching you pee.
