I always knew that Brody had it in her. The first album blew me away, but how could this machine, we call The Distillers, manage to pull out another amazing album? In todays "so called" punk rock scene, we have been smothered with corporate rich kid rock... I won't name any names, but you catch my drift. After hearing this album, I now know that I can remove the gun from my mouth and listen to Sing Sing Death House and bang my head on the ground until I'm a gushing red mess.

The first track "Sick Of It All" is a fast chaotic tune that mixes old Distillers with a newfound melodic rhythm that came with Ryan and Andy (the Distillers all new rhythm section) joining the band. Our crusty punk friend Rose aka.'Casper',aka.'guitarist' has seemed to come out of her shell and you can hear a lot more of her backing vocals/ growls/ and shrieks that she so 'matter-of-factly', does.

Frankly though, I'm sick of all the comparisons of Brody to her husband Tim from Rancid. If they weren't connected in any way, the next comparison would be to any female vocalist with a similar aggression and grit.

Why compare? Its fuckin punk rock. and its fuckin good.

Songs like "I Am A Revenant", "Sing Sing Death House" and "Bullet and The Bullseye" make you want to kick someone in the teeth, while a track like "City Of Angels" or "The Young Crazed and Peeling" reveal the Distillers "sensitive" side that we saw with "Gypsy Rose Lee", on their first record.

Speaking of the first record: if you happened to discover the hidden track after "The Blackest Years", which featured Brody and her axe, singing "We were young girls in a small world...", you will be happy to hear that its now a complete song with all the balls that makes the Distillers a well rounded punk rock band... if theres such a thing.

If I was a crack head and the Distillers were my dealers... Sing Sing Death House would be my fix.

    My Score:

This album is a lot easier on the ears than the first and in my opinion is better, probably with the growth of the remaing members of the band and the greatness of the new rythm section. I would have given this album a 10 but i think that towards the end the songs seem to loose the quality of the first half of the album, but don't all albums seem to have that one floor? that having been said non of the songs are bad. Musicly the band appear a lot more engaged and vocally nothing has been lost

    My Score:

look, i think the city of angels is great. really great. the only other track of theirs i've heard is that young crazed one, which is good too. brody is good looking, fine. she is heavily influenced by her significant other, fine. the music is formulaic and re-hashed, fine. But for my money, this band sounds pretty damn good, and i'm going to buy this album. At least it's not pop-punk, and if brody's looks and association with other well-known punk personalities help them sell more records, then more power to 'em. perhaps it will reach an audience it would otherwise not reach, and help show people that Avril fucking Levigne is not punk!

damn, i got this album, and the first time i heard it it blew me away. ill prob get people trying to tell me shit but i went to a No Doubt concert in houston and The Distillers opening for them(well for garbage and then no doubt) but thats when i knew the distillers were fuckin awesome. i mean the bands got it all. they put so much energy in their shows. badass album!

its an ok album. I give it 7

    My Score:

i have only heard a couple songs off of this album, so the score is what i think of those songs. i like em. but i wanted to put my 2 cents in on a couple things.

first of all, i have to agree that 10s are awarded a bit too easily sometimes. this cd i think might be an example of that, but ill check it out before i make a final judgement on that.

also, bad religion may very well be the best punk band of all time. don't even try to pin the "they should give it up because that "im 45 and still punk" is lame" bull shit on bad religion. they could be 75 and they would still rock harder than the vast majority of punk bands out there.(and process of belief definitely deserves 5 stars, but i think thats what it got anyway)

ive never seen brody. ever. not even a picture. hell, upon first hearing them i assumed she *was* pretty butch. the screams are what tipped me off. but if shes hot, thats just a bonus. hooray for hot punk chicks, even if a lot of them are kind of fucked up in the head....

and the brody to tim comparisons are fairly justified, i think. they both have unique, recognizable voices. i think brody probably was influenced by tim though. eitehr case, they both kick assssss.

and epitaph rules. best label ever (maybe). fuck that kid down there. fuck him in his stupid ass.

well im done babbling. i wish people would punch me whenever i talk for too long.

ahh fuck off all you haters. the distillers are great and i frankly could't give a shit what you think is punk or new or whatever, they just rock. period.

    My Score:

in today's "so called" punk scene it seems we have both corporate rich kid rock and bands that make laughable attempts at proving how "punk" they are.
where are the bands that come out with something totally new? and why does everyone embrace shit like this when it's not only a ripoff of the same thing a million other bands have done, they manage to even sound way too much like Rancid with a far worse singer.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, February 4, 2002 at 12:04 AM (EST)
    My Score:

Brody is hot? "I'm 45 and still punk"? What is all this nonsense? First off, did it ever occur to you fuckers that Tim Armstrong was like 30 when he started "dating" Brody, when she was 15?!?!?!?! The last I checked, that is against the law, and truthfully, SHE ISN'T EVEN WORTH IT! MY GOD! You guys are twisted! She is hot.. umm... are we looking at the same chick? And the dude ripping on Bad Religion, incinuating that The Distillers are punk, and Bad Religion is not.. sir, please, get your head out of your ass and keep something in mind: If you were formerly on a major label, then you jumped ship because your albums were not selling and you figured you could cash in on a "reunion", you are not punk. Also, if you are on a label (Hellcat), which is owned by a label ran by a member of said band that jumped from a major label, that happens to run an "independent" major label (Epitaph).... then you too, cease to be punk. DIY or DIE. Fuck EpiFat.

    My Score:

Fuckin' hardcore! Brody is hot. I was at the concert with bad religion on thursday of last week and they were great as always, but the crowd wasn't getting into it, I think mainly becuase Brody just doeasn't interact much, she just sits there and sings- that's not a bad thing, but for this kind of music it is unacceptable. Otherwise they are great, but Bad Religion blew them away with a legendary(to say the least) performance.

    My Score:

I totally agree with ommadden, I mean these guys are good, and other bands are maybe good and it's just not my thing but 10 stars? if the distillers brought something new, some new sound like perhaps The Shape of Punk to Come, or it had literally classic songs that won't just be forgotten in a few years, then I can understand giving it 10 stars. In fact it seems that probably €-90 albums on here get 10 and the reviews seem more like product endorsements rather than actual reviews.

eh, overrated a little. I think I would like them better live. I trust Tim to associate with good music, though perhaps in this case he was blinded by love.

    My Score:

I wasn't really into their first album all that much, nor did i dig their live show the first time i saw them. However, after warped this year i was blown away by some of the new songs, so i vowed to check out this album. I really couldn't say enough good things about it; those who say the songs are all the same clearly haven't actually listened to this record yet. It's a varied record in many ways, and i can tell it will be one of my favourites by the end of 2002 as much as it already is.

PS - There's nothing wrong with comparing brody to tim. Listen to their voices; they're practically the same, except Brody's is actually harsher...

Man...you guys throw around 5 stars as if they're morsals of food to give to a five stars. I saw the Distillers last night with Bad Religion in LA.... That marks my third time seeing the distillers live. Live..album...doesn't matter...they still suck. Every song is the same tempo...same chord structure...same unimaginative wailing vocals. Punk has evolved from this. It is a crime to give this alubm a "10" and not the Process of Belief. Aural raping is accurate.
