Having a unique voice can be a blessing and a curse. Fellow chanteuses Feist and Norah Jones found commercial success in molding jazz vocals with pop music in the past five or so years. Jolie Holland, too, has been gaining quite a following behind her more traditional approach to singing jazz music through the funnel of the indie rock world. But on her new album, The Living and the Dead, Holland strays into the dusty-booted world of late `60s, early `70s folk-tinged singer-songwriter fare, and it seems that the new stylistic approach might not be best suited.

she's got a beautiful voice never heard, very interested. They're a bit jarring? Have you listened to Jolie Holland before? That's a trademark of her music. It isn't sweet flowing. It's often stilted. I am really looking forward to picking this up. Good album, good review. I'd give it a pinch higher- after the initial listens I had no problem with her voice over an alt-country backing. You should listen to Catalpa! It's a lot like the more simplistic songs here. Good review. I will check this out. God I love this woman. I haven't heard this yet, but I will be checking it out soon. She's got some fucking pipes on her. All the incredible music on Anti- makes up for all the bad music on Epitaph. This is out?! I love Jolie Holland. | Features
