I have a pet peeve about a lot of these "scene" bands: the fact that most of them are very talented individuals yet continue to put out some of the most substance-free music. British metalcore...or er..."deathcore" band, Bring Me the Horizon, is Exhibit A. Let me clarify that there is "substance" here -- there are guitar solos, tempo changes, gang vocals -- but there isn't substance. There's no authenticity; it just seems like the songs were built from a collection of "brutal" ideas written on pieces of paper, put together in a hat, and splashed out on the floor.

Example:

Paper 1: "Hardcore influenced" verse -- You know, for the circle pits.

Paper 2: Bass boom into breakdown -- Get your bandanas, kids -- you don't want the ninjas to kick dirt in your cute faces.

Paper 3: Whiny singing -- Hey, we're emotional too! Goddamn, we're so diverse.

Voila! You've basically been shown how a song that seems to have no structure or formula actually does.

What really kills me is that just when a song like "The Sadness Will Never End" starts off kind of interesting, the overuse of studio production tricks ruins it. There really doesn't have to be cool drum filters, bass booms and obvious vocal manipulation in every song; I promise. Why listen to me though, right? I am not in a band loved by thousands, but in my defense, it doesn't seem to take much these days.

Bring Me the Horizon is one of those band that will be popular now but will most likely disappear in the next two years, and If I was ignorant to the concept of logic, this might "beg the question": What the fuck is Epitaph thinking?

These guys are the equivalent of a boy band for their genre, shame no one realizes that or will admit it. Like I told my friend, if they were all fat and ugly half their fan base at least would have never heard of them. The girls wouldn't love it and the guys wouldn't think it's cool to listen to them, so they probably would have never even reached a point in their career where they could have even left the U.K. and comes to the States, let alone have their CDs released here or have anyone care.

Shitty review. Awesome album cover. If you get down with Norma Jean and Misery Signals you'll love this album. I never liked this band, but this album fucking surprised the hell out of me. I was expecting to hate it but it's pretty awesome....

    Fuck no.

I love Misery Signals and I cannot stand Bring Me the Horizon. There a shit band only fueled by 14 year olds girls and 'br00tal' kids that think it's cool to love them. I find the girls obsession with Oli to be funny too. Apparently not enough people are aware of Oli's free time and how it consists of girls and urine...

Sucks I had to see them last week to see the Ghost Inside (Misery Signals didn't play cause Karl had bronchitis). Oh well, I got to hit scene whores during BMTH (lmfao, not even dancing, just flat out hitting them).

Why is the girl holding sausages on the front cover? Er, that's not very "br00tal".

Don't plan on listening to this, but what is with Epitaph putting cute little emo girls on their covers lately?

    Horrible review, just horrible.

I'm not a fan of the band, definently not, but the new record at least sounds like a band and it's not as "wow, metal, dude" as their earlier stuff and definently more of a modern rock record.

"So where are all the comments about how this album should not even be reviewed on this website in the first place?"

This review is clearly a joke on a joke band... where Lil Wayne is also clearly a joke, but you and your boytoy Anchors decide to continually defend the most god awful shit to ever be deemed hiphop. You and Anchor's claim Lil Wayne (I feel like an idiot every time I am forced to even spell out this fools name) is this "savior" of modern-day hiphop, where mikexdude does no such thing in his review. However, if he did make such asinine comments, I'm sure just as many people would be shitting on him as they do you and fucking Lil Wayne.

    That is all.

This band puts out some of the most godawful absolute shite I've ever heard. I can't believe anybody in their right mind can listen to this and think it's good music, much less enjoy it. We're exhausting the scenes here, people. What happens when we run out of genres to bastardize?

if you think is bad, you wanna hear their first EP... god-damn, that was epic in it's utter and unbridled shitness.

my brother downloaded a couple of tracks off this and what i heard was listenable (well, more so than their previous material), but like you say, completely lacks substance.

if you want good british metalcore, get "in the library of horrific events" by johnny truant.

I live with a guy who loves this band. It pains me.

I saw this band before they got as big as they are now about 3 or 4 years ago. A lot of good local bands played, so a lot of people turned up. I remember a lot of people talking about trying to punch the singer when they were playing. Whilst watching the band, I would see swings randomly come out of the pit, just missing the singer. It was definately the best thing about the gig.

Posted by tenwestchaser on 2008-11-29 01:41:55

One of my employees at work fucking LOVES this band. He argued with me when I called it cross over death metal shit then he went on to say that there is no death metal here. Kids are just ignorant these days. Regardless, the posts about kids growing out of this shit is true. I grew out of nu-metal. What I don't get, though, is that this is just the tenth copy of a copy type music from bands that actually were doing this well several years ago. This isn't as haneously bad as nu-metal but when one is shown good bands that started bringing this stuff into the scene (or bands that are much more interesting and still heavy as hell in a different way) wouldn't you think they'd listen or be interested enough to check it out? I like to think that I, when in High School, was much more receptive and interested in finding out which bands were influential to what I was listening to. Unlike these brats today.

    I must defend my country.

No-one born before 1992 likes this band.

It's simply a band that is 'cool' and young kids who haven't heard or really gotten into music yet buy into it and get the haircuts and tshirts and shoes and caps and they are all to innocent to realise how retarded it is.

Once those kids grow up, this band dies. But dammit I swear generations take longer and longer to grow up these days.
