Reviews

In its essence, Bomb the Music Industry!'s arsenal of calculated bleeps, drum machines, horns and intertwined keyboards are just downright catchy, but Jeff Rosenstock won't let his precious brainchild be a victim of producing cheap thrills; he chases down infectiousness with a lyrical shot of cynicism, sarcasm and reality that hits the heart harder than wooden stakes in Salem's Lot. Trying to review Scrambles ultimately leaves my brain "scrambled"; it's undeniably Rosenstock's greatest work -- the arrangements are diverse from ska upstrokes ("It Shits!") to the comforting resonance of piano ("Fresh Attitude, Young Body") and the lyrics are more pensive than ever; personally, however, it just fails to jab me in the gut like their 2006 pinnacle, Goodbye Cool World.

Doesn't sound promising coming from me? Let me clear this up before I move on: This is a phenomenal piece of music.

As promised, Scrambles is very light on the hardcore and ska, but there is always a worthy punk cut for every non-traditional one. Rosenstock tremulously begins the record with the acoustic-based "Cold Chillin' Cold Chillin'," where the distorted vocal effects and haunting accompaniments are vaguely reminiscent of Neutral Milk Hotel. The respites, "Stuff That I Like" and "It Shits!" increase volume and are staple BMTI! songs, frenetic shouts, humour and all. And while "Can I Pay My Rent in Fun" may seem quite safe for them, the folk-rockish strums of "Saddr Weirdr" (which has the greatest "bleeps" they've ever done) will be quite refreshing.

Rosenstock's bane with aging continues, when shouting "get out of my way because I’m twenty-five and I still act like I’m ten!" ("25!") or "if you don’t find a steady job now...if you don’t find someone to love now...you will die freezing cold and alone," it's more prevelant than ever. Likewise, his criticisms of the music scene are also present in "(Shut) Up the Punx!!!", his rant against "holier than thou" punks, where he includes some disgustingly true statements like "I think it’s dumb when you take the inherently fun like riding bikes and singing songs and say they’re not for everyone -- as if for your whole life you were cool as shit" in his fluent tirade.

Despite my own inability to personally connect to Scrambles (maybe a few more years under my studded belt will help), the Bomb the Music Industry! community has really outdone themselves. With flawless articulation and brilliant songwriting, Jeff Rosenstock is slowly becoming the only voice in punk that matters.

I can't wait for the next Bomb the Music Industry! album to come out. They just keep getting better and better. Jeff Rosenstock is a lyrical genious and puts on a great live show. I make it to their show every time they're in town. Support this band, download their records, and donate. Tell all your friends.

"its weird how no one has brought up any other names when questioning the 'most important voice in punk' statement"

People are still failing to see the "slowluy becoming" part where it implies he is NOT the most important, but SLOWLY over shadowing ones who were sought have some sort influenctial punk voice. He is not THERE yet, but he is becoming it... if that makes sense.

    People can't read.

It's the same thing iIf I said: "The Descendents are the greatest band that ever played music," it is my opinion and maybe hyperbole to you, but to me, it's true. Remember what you said about others having opinions.

Also, I think a lot of you are missing the "slowly becoming:" he is not quite there yet, but he's in the right direction is what that would mean. Sure many people say relevant things about politics or love but when it comes to "punk" ideals, stereotypes, scenes, not very many recent musicians have hit it as full on and perfectly as him.

    mike

love ya, lil bro, but you're totally wrong with this statement

"Just because you disagree with my opinion does not mean I used 'hyperbole'."

i think that the infamous line this review which i will not repeat is most definitely hyperbole in its purest form.

Posted by mikexdude on 2009-03-09 13:14:25

"Laughable. Get over this guy, please. Those lyrics are simple and direct, and there's something to be said about that style of writing because it can be pretty effective, but come on. There's nothing here that's making him "the only voice in punk that matters." I love the amount of hyperbole that gets thrown around when doing reviews. You gave it an 8, yet you didn't connect with it all that well? Seems ridiculous."

Okay, this pisses me off because I remember you saying you wrote for Pitchfork or something so you should be aware of this stuff. You need to get over yourself and so does everyone else: Just because you disagree with my opinion does not mean I used "hyperbole." It's one to say that you disagree, but questioning my authenticity behind it is more pretentious than my statement itself.

Also, I would give high scores to records that I enjoy but don't necessarily connect with... Strike Anywhere, Black Flag, hell... even Elvis Costello. Just because I don't connect to the themes (because I am 17 and not 25) does not mean I don't find the music incredible (I am a musician before I am a writer or anything else) or that this is a huge step up from their other records TECHNICALLY.

I'm quite impressed this time around. Jeff usually leaves me hanging a bit in the song construction department - he has great ideas that often don't quite make the translation from head to album intact. I think Scrambles is getting closer to crafting a good artistically and musically cohesive album. I like the difference in styles rather than just relying on one genre for inspiration. The Neutral Milk Hotel influence is well-stated and you can tell Jeff has really embraced some love of Lo-Fi music in general.

    Keep it up Brosenstock.

Posted by skankbook on 2009-03-07 07:00:00
    My Score:

Each BTMI! (and Jeff Rosenstock) album has gradually gotten better than the one before, which is really saying something. "Three Cheers For Disappointment!" is an incredible ska/punk album, but it's the fifth best album Jeff has released. The release of "Get Warmer" was overshadowed by the "summer of 'New Wave' hate/love," yet I still felt it was the album of 2007.

Even though "Scrambles" doesn't have as many live drum tracks or "actual" instruments as "Get Warmer," it still has the same theme of Jeff (and us) growing up. "Fresh Attitude, Young Body" has become a personal anthem of sorts, and the "power ballads" don't seem out of place or have much of an impact on the album pacing.

The only reason I'm giving it a 9 instead of a 10 is Asian Man hasn't shipped the physical album yet, which promises to have a 32 page 'zine with notes from Kepi and others.
