It's easy to romanticize about one's past. Sometimes I find myself looking back on times gone by where a group of friends would seem to spend endless nights idling away at nothing. We'd leave a movie, show, party or whatever function we were at that night, and pile into someones 1980-something or other with a rear door that didn't open and three functioning seat belts and peel out like a bat out of hell (even though there was nowhere to really go). Someone would flip through an oversized CD binder and pick out whatever melodic punk band we were digging at the time; Bouncing Souls, the Broadways, NOFX, Operation Ivy all laid side by side, waiting to get selected and put into the portable CD player that was connected to the car's tape deck through a weird adapter that was purchased at Radio Shack. These albums required being played as loud as possible, as we all shouted along in the backseat and the car filled with the smoke of the driver's Camel Wides.

We'd drive around all night doing whatever came to mind (plans were not a perquisite). Sometimes it would be driving to the top of the hill overlooking the city and shooting the shit until the sun came up. Sometimes we'd just go to the home of whoever had parents out of town and hang out there. Jump off roofs into pools, drink at the local park, blow shit up with Mexican fireworks, anything to stay out later and spend more time with the people who you related to more than anything else in the world. Anchor Down's six-song EP Steel to Dust, on Solidarity Records would be the perfect soundtrack to those nights and it's a disc that I'm still excited to listen to now.

I like Dantes review, it's a nice change really.
Wouldn't have minded a tiny bit of background information about the band though. I know nothing about these guys.

I agree with nocigar. Score is for the reviewer. Well said.

It's nice to have someone write something besides straight up reviews every now and then. It changes up the pace, and I actually enjoyed reading this...because it's exactly what i did in my small ass town growing up. We didn't have access to Mexican Fireworks though, so we just lit shit on fire with gasoline we stole from my buddy's Excavation Company he worked for.

    My Score:

"World War 1" is one of the catchiest songs I've heard in a long time. This band is fucking sick.

    Well if kylewagoner says it.....

btw, i don't really see how this classifies as a "review"

LOL at this bitch-ass review. Dante traveling down memory lane is so fuckin' precious.

Get Bent is a good band.

And the hostility is disgusting. Chill out, man.

Posted by astronautjones on 2009-04-25 18:14:40

this, coming from a dude who probably used to laugh at larry the cable guy until someone told him it wasn't funny. don't you think you're calling the kettle black? honestly, i'm kinda surprised that you didn't just reply with, "that's so funny i forgot to LOL".

    get bent you fucking nerd.

    Posted by Dante3000 on 2009-04-25 15:48:54

dante, next time you feel like taking a drive down memory lane, do us all a favor and drive yourself off a cliff. nobody cares for your nostalgic bullshit.

review sucks. score is for the band.

LOL, man I can tell you must have learned from some comedy greats. You must have at least three Dane Cook CD's in your collection to come up with that zinger. With any luck one day you'll graduate to jokes like, "White people do this, but black people do this!"

I'll keep you in my prayers.

These guys rule. Ever since we played with them in Portland, we literally drove to Seattle, Boise, Reno, and back listening to this record. Great music, great basements, and most of all rad fkn dudes. Buy this record and see them live!

LOL@astronautjones. It's like comedy gold son! "I don't care what you write. I care so little I'm going to get a general idea of what was said and then comment about how little I care!"

Maybe later you can send me a love letter about how little you care.

    My Score:

This EP is my album of the year. The double axed attack with intricate guitar solos, dueling raspy and harmonious vocals, all anchored by a strong rhythm section is what melodic punk is meant to be.

    My Score:

It's about time there was a new band doing that classic East Bay/Midwest sound. I love it! They blend quite a few styles well.

For Fans Of: Jawbreaker, Ann Berretta, D4, Samiam, Rites Of Spring, Lawrence Arms, Pinhead Gunpowder, Smoke Or Fire, and maybe even a little Hot Water Music

    Posted by Dante3000 on 2009-04-24 16:54:29

Thanks Epoch...It's a little self indulgent but all I could think of when I spun this record was, "Damn..This would sound so tight in the back of a civic going 85 down the highway at 2am and nowhere to be". Plus I try not to do, "For fans of..".
I'm waiting for people to start calling it gay.

    Nice review Dante.

    I miss those days :(

    Posted by Dante3000 on 2009-04-24 16:18:59

I dunno, all I could think about when I was listening to this album was all that old nostalgic shit. Maybe it doesn't sound exactly like those bands but that's what I was thinking of when I heard it.

Posted by miniblindbandit on 2009-04-24 16:11:34

i like it. wouldn't mind hearing the guy try singing outside of his range a bit more though.

    Posted by Blackjaw_x on 2009-04-24 15:07:33

I can see the band being disappointed in this review... it doesn't describe their sound at all. People will think "ew, this sounds like old skatepunk?" but it doesn't at all.

Posted by preston on 2009-04-24 14:29:09

Great. Now you've made me nostalgic.
