| Catch 22Alone In a Crowd2000 Victory
Review by: Liam Andrew See others by this writer Catch 22's Official Website (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on June 11th 2002 I really can't say enough about Catch 22. This 7-piece ska-core outfit from New Jersey cannot be matched by many. Their infectious blend of fast, catchy ska and occasional delves into hardcore make for a great album that simply cannot be missed. While it does not quite match their unforgettable 1998 debut release, Keasbey Nights, it is a great album that definitely lived up to my expectations. After former C22 frontman Thomas Kanolky quit, I was worried about a change in style. They are still definitely the same Catch 22, this album will not disappoint. This release takes Keasbey Nights, makes their ska ruder, and makes their hardcore harder. Every single instrument (and the vocals) are done at a blazing speed and precision paralleled by few, pumping every song full of energy and liveliness. The tracks run together a little, but if songs are going to sound the same they might as well sound like this. My only other disappointment with this album is that it starts to die out at the end. Still, I could not ask for a better album: This is definitely one worth checking out. Some favorites: Sounds Good, but I Don't Know - Lame name but a great song, probably my favorite on the CD. It's fast, catchy, and fun...the epitome of C22. It Takes Some Time - This is more of a swing-style rhythm that only proves Catch 22's savvy with playing different styles of music. What Goes Around Comes Around - Their most popular song off Alone in a Crowd, this is really catchy and has nice transitions betwen ska and hardcore. Bloomfield Ave. - Probably the fastest Catch 22 song ever. And I love those types. Excellent. Wreck of the Sloop John B. - This is just funny. Worth mentioning simply for the coolness factor of covering a Beach Boys song. Neverending Story - Classic ska-core, this was my favorite song off the album when I first heard it. Absolutely bitching horn melodies.
All in all, this is not quite at the amazing level of Keasbey Nights, but it is a fun album that you most certainly will not be disappointed with. Go check it out!

I don't know why, but I can't stand these guys ever since Kalnoky left. But good review, score is for that. Why is there no Cheap Trick reviews on this site! sum1??? Seriously, that is the gayest thing I have ever read. Would someone please ban emptycauses? Haha no way mr. Gay! great ska album, hard to replace thomas, but they do a great job, sum1 ban joe mama i love that canteen boy skit. These guys have been horrible since Thomas left. I've seen them 5 times with him and 4 times without, and there's just no compairing. When Thomas left they should have changed their name because whoever is doing the song writing now can't write worth a shit. just my two pennies. This makes me laugh. Agreed it aint quite Keasby Nights but it is good. To all the fucks who claim ska is dead "FUCK OFF", bands like Catch 22 are doing freaking well at keeping the 3rd wave going Takes one to know one JOE MAMA. To the Anonymous person: I agree that Mad caddies is one of the best ska bands to see live. I personally think they are far better than Catch 22 but I still think C22 does a good job live too. This is crazy good shit. 11 ahhhh to be 12 again.... Good to see Joe Momma's got a lot of costructive things to say on this website. No one cares if it is gay. We just want to know if is good or not. Sexual preferance has nothing to do with musical ability the last I checked. Ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay ska is gay and this is ska so it is gay their recorded songs are excellent, but after seeing them live they just can't conpare to other ska bands. A few weeks before seeing them at SXSW this year, I saw the Mad Caddies. And I hvae to say, the Mad Caddies put on one of the tightest (together wise) and best shows I've ever seen. You want to talk about precision, talk about the Mad Caddies. Catch 22 didn't play together very well when I saw them, and they didn't have incredible energy either as far as the poppy ska-punk goes, these guys are one of the best. most of the really poppy ska-punk sucks (ie. the ska trend of a few years past, much as another teary-eyed trend today). i thought there live show at the warped last year was really weak though, i think it was because they just got their new singer. i can think of lots of ska bands i like better, but as far as this kind of ska goes, they are at the top. certainly better than less than jake. This album rocks.. I admit I dont own Keasbey Nights so I can't say which is better, but I do like Alone in the Crowd. This one kid i met called them "phony ska"... not a very nice kid. Anyway, C22 is great live too, full of energy and just getting the crowd going very well. I personally don't think ska is dead but if people choose to think that, that's fine. I heard this cd at my friend's house right before seeing them live and I was totally impressed. I already own Keasbey Nights but I've got to add this to the collection.. these guys play ska like there's no tomorrow! please...i bet you have tons of ska cd's under your bed...oh wait..no one cares what you have to say anyway... Stop living in 1997. Ska sucks, and everyone knows it. They have become a joke because they can’t keep a lead singer for more then an album usually… They have 3 albums…and two singers…right now they are on their 3rd official singer...but they have had a few that have joined and quit quickly. This was a great band, but it’s a shell of its former self. ps: no mention of their acoustic track "Alone in a Crowd"? this is a great album...right now i think the guys are writing stuff....i talked to thtem when they played at my college...only like 30 of us...all hanging out with the band, skankin and "hardcoring" around... me and a friend were discussing this album awhile ago and while with both agreed that this is a good album, we felt that it had something wrong. eh...this album is pretty good. Bass player is great though. Fuck all yall that ain't down with ska. I love ska/reggae, peace. Catch-22 is great! I like this cd a LOT more than Keasbey Nights, which I thought was rather weak compared to this. The lead singer spits so fast its stupid! why are they a joke? Ahhh fAt mAn lives in NJ...fAt mAn remembers the old days of seeing Catch 22 play places like the Saint in Asbury Park and a park in Howell...now this band has become a joke...a really bad joke...this is a good cd...not as good as Keasbey, one of the best "3rd wave" ska albums So ska is gay huh? Well TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE!!! Oooh, burn! (sarcasm) Yeah, I know you, secretly listening to your No Doubt and Reel Big Fish records... hoping your punk as fuck friends don't find out that you're not as HARDCORE as you pretend to be. But it's all in good fun, I just enjoy mocking people that think differently than me. Yeah, sure, it's good and all, but not as cool as belittling people based on the color of their skin. Racism is cool! Kuz dick cheney sez so! Don't mess with texas! no they are so gay. Man i dont know another band as crapy as this. Cuz ska is gay. |
