Tenacious D

The Complete Masterworks DVD (2003)

Tenacious D. Either you love 'em or you hate 'em. If you're a hater, please go click on another review and quit clogging up bandwidth. JB and KG, in my humble opinion, are two of the funniest men in comedy today, and this DVD captures them at their best, both past and present.

The Complete Masterworks is a two-DVD set, packed chock full of goodies. Disc one, labeled "For Fans," contains the duo captured onstage in England. The footage is shot beautifully [considering there really isn't much to shoot], and the crowd is rather insane, singing along with every song [and reciting every bit off the album perfectly, as well]. JB and KG are on the top of their game in this show, as their stage banter is better than I've ever seen it anywhere else. Also on disc one are all six of their original HBO episodes - if you've never seen these, you've been seriously deprived. From the one about Sasquatch to the one about them stalking their only fan, these will have you in stitches.

Disc two, labelled "For Psycho Fans," gets quite a bit raunchier - you might want to put the kids to bed for this one. Included are three of the most disturbingly funny short films I've ever seen, all three of the band's music videos [as well as a cool making-of for "Wonderboy" and "Tribute"], and both in-the-studio and on-the-road documentaries. The coolest thing are probably the TV clips from Crank Yankers, Conan O'Brien, and MADtv, the last of which features Warren of the Vandals on guitar and Dave Grohl on drums. Hot shit.

Once again, the D isn't for everyone, but if you've ever emitted a chuckle at anything Jack Black's ever done, I promise that you'll love this DVD. Well shot, well produced, and loaded with extras, The Complete Masterworks is the ultimate Tenacious D-VD.
