Defeatist

Thanatonic State [7 inch] (2008)

Brian Shultz

New York City's Defeatist receive frequent Napalm Death comparisons, and that's about the only reference point you need. A higher-pitched, screaming vocalist alleviates some of the pressure, but overall, Thanatonic State is a pretty intense eight-song offering.

Thanatonic State is one of a few 7"s the band released around this time, and offers about the same lengthy punch in the face as another eight-song 7", In Praise of False Hope (Chainsaw Safety). It's incomprehensibly screamy grindcore in a sufficiently brutal state, with a slightly crusty slant. Not that there's much here to tell one track apart from another, but I think my favorite is "Loathe," which kicks off the second side in mighty, air drum-inviting fashion. There's an overall bitter tone…some apocalyptic imagery in "Snuffed"…I guess you'll have that.

If you like what you hear here, you've got a bit of collecting to do, but it might be worth it.
