Bomb the Music Industry!

Adults!!!: Smart!!! Shithammered!!! And Excited by Nothing!!! (2010)

David

This is how music should work. The music industry is at a pretty interesting point (duh), and lots of bands "get it" to a varying degree, but I think it's safe to say that no band "gets it" better than Bomb the Music Industry!.

With no notice and no hype, Bomb the Music Industry! unleashes its second 10"-length EP, entitled Adults!!!: Smart!!! Shithammered!!! And Excited by Nothing!!!. And it's great. The music is fun and catchy. But that's almost not even the point at some level. This is a band that goes out there and actually does something. You might not like every song, but what are you going to do, ask for your money back? All their songs are "free" at the Quote Unquote Records website, and you can donate whatever you want/can afford.

Now obviously, it's not enough simply to churn out really crappy, soulless music, even if you're offering it for free. But Bomb the Music Industry! has fun with every single release, and it comes through in each album. I think it's more obvious in their more spastic songs, so I usually dig Bomb albums in direct proportion to the fast song:slow song ratio. But I usually just cut all the toned-down songs out of the playlist. Someone else might have a different set of preferences and pick the songs they like. There's no need to bitch about having bought an album where there are some songs you don't like--just don't listen to them!

Anyways, It's been three paragraphs, and I should probably get to the actual music, because despite the fact that this whole album was done in five days (?!?), it is really, really good. The album has six songs, plus one 30-second electronic interlude (which is less annoying than it sounds). Of the six songs, one ("All Ages Shows") is of the toned-down variety--you know, the "Sweet Home Cananada" or "Wednesday Night Drinkball" type. I think it holds up pretty well with past toned-down stuff, though it's not really my type. As a bonus, it has a very brief Laura Stevenson vocal appearance (I think it's her, at least).

The other five songs are all fun, catchy, and pretty fast. The last track, "Struggler" was previously released around Christmastime. It's slower than most of the songs on here, but possibly the most adorably spastic. Even if the lyrics are asynchronously (though expectedly for the band) depressing/sarcastic ("I don't wanna go outside 'cause I might have a terrible day!").

The rest of the album is exactly what you'd expect from Bomb the Music Industry!: eclectic instrumentation, fast pace, and full-blown spazz. To me this band is all about going out there and having fun. While they might not be the only band with that attitude, they are among the best at bringing that fun into your living room. The EP is free, so there's no excuse to miss it. But remember to donate if you can--these guys work their asses off.
