Green Day is considering a movie version of their new "punk opera," American Idiot, according to MTV.com. The disc, which came out on September 21st, is a concept record that follows the life of a single character, the Jesus of Suburbia. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said, "We've definitely been talking about someone writing a script for it, and there's been a few different names that have been thrown at us. It sounds really exciting, but for right now it's just talk."
Armstrong jokingly suggested getting modern punk rockers such as Rancid's Tim Armstrong or Good Charlotte's Joel and Benji Madden to play roles in the proposed movie, like the 1975 film of the Who's rock opera, Tommy, which cast musicians including Eric Clapton and Elton John. The group may also release a documentary about the making of the album itself. Director John Roecker filmed the recording sessions, about which Armstrong said, "There's a lot of creative hijinks going on in more ways than just playing music." Green Day (180 comments)

I remember back around when Nimrod came out, Green Day always talked about making a cheesy horror movie and writing the soundtrack to it. That'd be cool if that was what they did next (they've mentioned a few times where they would go from here). 2+ Replies

That would be one kick-ass movie... especially if Tim Armstrong is the main character 9+ Replies

If there was a Billie Joe character in the movie, only Giovanni Ribisi could play that shit. Justin Timberlake better stay away from this. 4+ Replies

They should have Mike Ness in it, just so he could beat the living tar out of the rest of the cast. That would rock. 1+ Reply

Did this article just actually refer to Joel and Benji Madden as "modern punk rockers"? 4+ Replies

you "punks", thats what you liked to be called, are pathetic. There has not been one decent punk cd out this year, and the moment Green Day trys to do something a little artistic, though a colossal failure, you praise it as the best cd of 2004. Is American Idiot a bad cd? Perhaps not, but it is far from the best of 2004. Like a hungry pack of wolves, you just want something to save this bastardization of real punk music. Excuse me while I listen to some Mogwai. ----- May I suggest - pitchforkmedia.com tinymixtapes.com - The Merry Prankster 8+ Replies

"There has not been one decent punk cd out this year" A few more than decent punk albums this year: Descendents reuniting for "Cool to Be You", Mission of Burma reuniting for "OnOffOn", Only Crime "To the Nines", Bad Reliogion "Empire Strikes First", Rise Against, Converge, Alk3/One Man Army. If you don't find any of these albums released this year at least decent, then you probably just don't like punk rock. It's okay if you don't like it, but take your head and your ass that its in somewhere else. Why the hell would you be on PunkNews.com if you dont like punk? We so called "punks" as you say it, don't really care what people like you think. Thats the beauty in this musical movement. 2+ Replies

the new cd is so dissapointing. It almost seems like billy joe had a head injury and isn't as smart the lyrics on the new cd are terrible(ex. "She's an extraordinary girl and an ordinary world,"When i heard that i wanted to throw my cd out the window) and this is comming from a very big green day fan 2+ Replies

You do really have to hand it to Green Day, because for all the reasons you may hate them now, lets face it, they were the reason you started listening to punk rock in the first place. Despite your opinion of whether or not they are sellouts or preps or....puppy drowners, a punk rock opera would be sweet, and i would much rather see one from green day then from say, Antiflag or the Casualties, despite the fact that i mostly prefer their music. I say kudos to Green Day for at least speculating that kinda stuff. I bet im not alone in saying that somedays I hate their poppy, power-chorded, Blink182 touring, selling out and on the other days, I stare at the picture of me and Billie Joe (I met him at a park when I was 12) and think how great it is that they popularized the punk music scene enough to get me interested enough in it to....call them posers. I feel like a guy show rest of comment 10+ Replies

I thought this album would be a good movie, with jesus of suburbia, St. Jimmy and Whatsername. Then I heard the band was considering to make a movie out of it. They should definitely make it! 2+ Replies

I do not care what any of you freaks say. GREEN DAY is the best and you know it! Sure the Casualties are cool, and The Distillers are awsome. But dudes/ dudettes... you can't deny that DEEP inside you find GREEN DAY very, very cool. Come on people, who can't deny the good ol' GREEN DAY songs like "MINORITY" or "SHE"? They may not be as hard core as you might like them to be... but they have their own style and their own way of doing things. So... JUST LOVE THE MUSIC YOU AMERICAN IDIOTS!!!

c'mon people! There was a place where Punk had to start, and we know it was with Green Day. Right here in Berkeley at the little club, 924 Gilman. They are a fucking legend at that place. if you listen to the people taking in there....you hear Green Day mentioned no matter what! Do not deny that you sing Green Day songs under your breath. Do Not deny that you went out and bought the CD Dookie, and played it at top volume in your room and moshed alone! Green Day put out an amazing album, that should be made into a movie goddammit! AND IT WILL BE!! 1+ Reply
