The nominees for the 47th annual Grammy Awards have been announced, with Green Day picking up a total of six. The band's new album American Idiot is up for the top prize of Album Of The Year, along with Best Rock Album. Its title track is nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Rock Song. The band also has nominations for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group and Best Short Form Music Video.
Also of note is the Johnny Cash & Joe Strummer collaboration on "Redemption Song," which is up for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. Among the artists and records nominated in various categories are Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, The Shins, Hatebreed, Killswitch Engage, Motörhead, Modest Mouse, Beastie Boys and Toots & The Maytals. You can find the full list of nominees at the Grammy website. Eligible recordings were those released between October 1, 2003 and September 30, 2004. The Grammy awards will be handed out during a February 13th ceremony at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It will be broadcast live on CBS at 8 p.m EST. Green Day (206 comments)

seriously. from both the singles i have heard, this album is average at best. so unless someone tells me the other tracks are nothing like american idiot or the walking alone one, then i hope to god this doesnt win. but yeah, like someone said, who cares, its the grammys so it really means nothing. what albums is it up against in the rock category? - jones the bones - stevejones8770@yahoo.com 8+ Replies

how can cradle of filth be nominated for any song other than "gilded cunt"? that's the song that's always on my music choice metal channel, so it must be the single. 2+ Replies

i just saw the gayest saved by the bell either. i mean, its saved by the bell and thats pretty gay already, so you can imagine how gay the gayest is. it is when they are all in a band together called "zack attack" and they are famous, and jesse isnt in the show at all. and they get all famous and they win a grammy or something. then they all wake up and it was a dream. it was kinda like green day's career. - jones the bones - stevejones8770@yahoo.com 9+ Replies

that ridiculous, ive been somewhat of a green day fan over the years in that i think they are a good 3 chord pop punk band nothing amazing or ground breaking but solid and decent song writing. this new album is just one ripped off part after another though, its ridiculous. there is very little on this album that isnt an obvious rip off of bands like like Dillinger Four, Cheap Trick, Motley Crue, tom petty...etc. its horrible. at least i know at the punkvoter CMJ show D4 kinda made reference to it when before they played the song green day ripped off for the single american idiot Patty said "this is the first song on the new green day album, you do the math" 5+ Replies

AWARD SHOWS ARE CRAP IN GENERAL! A bunch of old fucks who are out of touch with music. That crappy independent one that nominated a bunch of epitaph/anti- artists is no exception.
Someone (December 7, 2004)
is it only me or do those who pick the nominations for the grammy's love choosing mediocre albums by good artists? (see-wilco; modest mouse; and outkast, last year) and franz ferdinand and the killers are two of the worst bands i have ever heard (granted franz would not be that bad had there never been a band called Gang of Four....the killers are just terrible, all style no substance bullshit.)

Everyone knows the Grammy's are a joke. My question is: why doesn't it bother people? There were some fabulous albums released this year and It'd be really nice to see them get the credit they deserve. It'd also be nice if the Grammys receive the complete lack of coverage they so justly deserve or are destroyed by anything from an irrate Suge Knight to three day old sushi. 2+ Replies

What a horrible line-up. 2 Cds that should be in for best cd of the year Brian Wilson - Smile Lorletta Lynn - Van Lear Rose. I would put in the Arcade Fire - Funeral, but they are clearly out the mainstream. 5+ Replies

The big problem about the Grammys is you have to be on a major label to get nominated. Unlike the Acadmey Awards where a self produced or independant movie can get a nominated. Also Green Day is going to walk away with at least one grammy. Usually the albums nominated for album of the year win their individual sub catagory(s). i.e. Outcast won best rap album and best album. If they didnt win best rap album how could they even qualify for best album. 1+ Reply

Does anyone think that its funny that anyone pays attention to the grammys. This has more to do with album sales than quality of music. Anyways, who is to decide what is quality of music anyway. Opinions of music are personal, and dont need to be glamorized or justified by an award. I could give a shit about who wins, all that means is that a lot of people agreed with eachother on one band/persons music. I dont like any band or music because a bunch of other Assholes, nor would I dislike for the same reson.

I can't stand that song. The rest of the Green Day album is at least decent, but that one song...

It sucks that the songs nominated for "best rock song" are always the singles... sure it's not like many of the bands are that great but still Green Day is probably the best (longevity, loyal fanbase) amongst the listed bands, but there are way better songs than "American Idiot" on said album. "Give Me Novacain" and "Whatshername" are both amazing and stronger tracks. I guess it's okay because I would prefer those better songs DID NOT become singles... therefore Green Day naysayers are deprived of the above songs.
swingline (December 8, 2004)
i agree with you. the new green day just doesn't beat the old green day albums (except for Holiday) but the new blink album beats the shit out of the old blink and then rapes his mom with a rusted iron pipe. 2+ Replies

i don't know if Tom Waits has won anything before, but he deserves something. the Grammy's really are a joke, but at the same time i still find myself very much wanting to see a worthwhile artist win. it's like the Oscars, the fact that Martin Scorsese hasn't won shit proves its worthlessness. i mean, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas all lost? fuck the academy and the grammys. 2+ Replies
Someone (December 8, 2004)
the Arcade Fire. i read so many stellar reviews of the album, i was kind of disapoointed upon listening. basically, Modest Mouse reads some Neutral Milk Hotel lyrics and finds an appreciation for operatic theatrics. pretty accurate. for a 9.7 at Pitchfork i expected something more (honestly, the records that have scored in the 8 range at Pitchfork in the past two years have proven to be the best). 2+ Replies

Wow, you guys could bitch about anything. Congratulations to the bands nominated, I know if any of you were nominated for a damn thing you'd cream your pants once you found out. Lastly, the Green Day album was decent, though I found it humorous how soo many people were claiming how intellectual the lyrics and musicianship was the day the thing was released - It's still Green Day, albeit making 9 minute songs that sound exactly the same. Peace, -SOYBOMB-
