Stream Gang Of Four's "Return the Gift"

Gang of Four has posted a full album stream of Return the Gift, their recently released full length. The reunited post-punk quartet signed to V2 back in April and the label issued Return the Gift on September 20th. The record is entirely composed of re-recordings of their songs, and a special UK edition included a bonus disc with remixes and covers performed by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ladytron, Hot Hot Heat, the Dandy Warhols, the Others, Amusement Parks on Fire, Faultline, the Rakes, Phones, Go Home Productions, and Tony Kanal of No Doubt. The bonus disc will be released seperately in the US this month.

The band is currently on tour in support of the compilation as well as the remastered edition of 1979 debut, Entertainment! which also included the Yellow EP and four previously unreleased recordings.

i hate when myspace does full album streams because you cant skip track to track. at least the stream quality is better than purevolume though,

Visiting myspace.com causes my internet connection to shit itself everytime. I don't know why, but it utterly refuses to do dns lookup after going there... perhaps it's trying to warn me of myspace's overwhelming shittyness?

This actually sounds pretty good so far, but why buy it when you have the originals? Unless I see this for real cheap I doubt I'll get it.

There's a good piece written by Simon Reynolds about this remake on Slate, here. I believe this quote sums it up nicely: "Return the Gift places in plain, unavoidable sight the redundancy and reconsumption involved in rock's nostalgia market. When fans buy new albums by reformed favorites of their youth, at heart they're hoping for a magical erasure of time itself. They're not really interested in what the band might have to say now, or where the band members' separate musical journeys have taken them in subsequent decades; they want the band to create "new" songs in their vintage style. Such consumer bad faith is precisely the kind of phenomenon that the old Gang of Four enjoyed skewering. Could it be that Return is saying, 'You want a Gang of Four resurrection?
