Alkaline Trio talks "Goddamnit" reissue, DVD, future plans

On a recent stop of their Occult Roots of Alkaline Trio: Early Songs for Eerie People tour Alkaline Trio drummer Derek Grant recently spoke to RGJ magazine about some of the band's future plans.

First, Grant described plans to re-release Goddamnit with bonus tracks and other vintage material. Grant said the band would also like to work on a DVD:

We're going to try to pull something together, so that's why we are filming parts of this tour, So there are other projects for sure, but we'll be primarily writing for the next album most of the year. We want to be able to go into the studio at the end of the year, or early next year.

The tour is the latest in months of touring since the release of Crimson. The album was re-released this past December in a "Deluxe" version with bonus material.

Various stops on the tour include Against Me!, the Lawrence Arms, the Draft and the Black Maria.

they played my standard break from life acoustic, dead and broken, tuck me in, my friend peter, burn, dethbed, mercyme, you've got so far to go, this could be love, private eye, a couple more, and radio with a misfits intro (some kind of hate, i think) in Boston. so fucking awesome.

Except Against Me! hung out with me afterwards.

Show was pretty awesome indeed. Best part was actually before the show, outside, when a group of a kids complimented me for 'not wearing an emo shirt' (i had a Big D shirt on). Kickass.

We got Old School Reasons in Hartford.... They could of just played that for a half an hour and I would of been happy.

Seriously though, they only played like 6 tracks from the last 2 albums. I was very surprised with all the old material they played. Good times.

at that time they were playing to 1000 people in detroit. the first time i saw them was in early 99 and it was a huge sold out show. we must be too close to chicago. i do, however, have a video tape of matt and dan playing acoustic around the time from here to infirmiry came out at a record store with about 30-40 people there

That video may be from Spaceboy records in Philly, which was during the day before they played at the Rotunda, which was my first "real" show. I was at the in-store and show, and it is a great memory, that day.

Anyway, reason I bring it up, is because I saw two people taping the instore at Spaceboy, and I know that it has been circulated, and I also have a video of the show from later that night.

Really? I remember seeing Alkaline Trio at a big sold out show at St. Andrew's Hall in '99 but they weren't headlining. Around '99-2000 they would headline at the Shelter which definitely doesn't hold 1000 people. Maybe my memory's bad, I dunno.

Are you sure about that? I think your date might be off. They had just released Goddamnit late '98, right? I'm sure by late 2000, early 2001 they might have been playing for that many, but not early '99.

You're drunk. Alkaline Trio couldn't draw 1000 people in Chicago in 1999. My oooold old old band played with them in April of '99 to maybe 100 kids. I booked them a show in January of 2000 and there were under 200 attendees.

It'd be nice if reissues like that came out on Asian Man but I can see why if it's a no contracts deal (s I've always understood Asian Man to be) another record label could grab the rerelease.

Asian Man should thrive because they still have good bands, though.

Both bands are better in smaller venues...especially the Arms so I think I shall have to disagree...Against Me!'s sound translates pretty decently to bigger clubs.

I definitely agree that Infirmary is their best record. I didn't think many people agreed with that though. Wasn't that their first record on Vagrant? Everyone is always saying their Vagrant stuff is terrible and how only Alkaline Trio's old stuff is good. I think Infirmary is definitely their best cd, one of my favorites of any band really.

The DVD better contain old show footage, they already have a recent live DVD out. Also, reissues are weak, especially if they come out on a different label. I don't want Mike Park to get fucked by ALK 3 like Less Than Jake did when they reissued Pezcore without his permission. I soubt they would though because they are still friends from what I know.

i might stand alone on this, but goddamnit is actually my least favorite alkaline album or ep. it has some great songs, (like cringe and clavicle), but i'd rather see a re-release of their self-titled collection. maybe clean up the audio and add some more rare/live items. or for that matter, see that energy go into new material sooner.

AMAZING.

i still can't believe i got to see them play Goddamnit in it's entirety. i think i just stood there for the longest time with a dumbass smile on my face because i was so happy.

i don't care where you live, if you're a fan, find a way to see this tour.

Saw this tour in Cleveland last night, and while I was beyond stoked to see my second-favorite album played in its entirety, we sorta got the shaft on the "fan picked" portion of the set. This is what we had, minus Goddamnit:

Alkaline Trio is my favorite band....

that being said .... I fucking hate deluxe editions, DVD's, re-issues and whateverI don't want anything special excpet a new cd Because they're my favorite band I'm gonna feel obligated to buy this and then I'm gonna feel stupid afterwards because I already have everything on it including the bonus tracks.

They should re-record it entirely, the Larry Arms should do the same thing with their first album or two. Of course this will never happen. The only time I've ever heard of a band re-recording an entire album is the power metal band Dungeon.
