Jawbreaker three part audio documentary

Adam Metz solo musician, formerly of Bicycle Rider has produced a three part audio documentary about Jawbreaker. Metz has previously recorded bands such as Neutral Milk Hotel and Toe.

He had this to say about the project:

I have compiled a 3-part audio documentary (one hour total in length) about Jawbreaker, in cohort with the group. The first segment aired [yesterday and] the second and third will air Wednesday and Friday.

There are two never-before-heard tracks - one of a live cut, the other of, most likely, the last song that Blake wrote with the group, from spring 1996.

Since the band's breakup in 1996, two releases have been produced; 2002's Etc. and 2004's reissue of the band's sole major label release, Dear You.

Great bands that released 4 flawless albums and split up in their prime ARE generally viewed through rose tinted glasses... but that doesn't mean that they were any less great.

So, any band that a lot of people like and agree are hugely influential and released amazing albums (including one of the best ever), and they're voerrated because you don't think they're that good?
I mean, I've never liked Sonic Youth, EVER. But I don't think they're overrated.

I would say, as evidenced by the relative popularity of, say, Husker Du to Britney Spears, we see that opinions are not more strongly validated if more people share them.

And I know this is a murky area. What is fact and what's opinion and what have you. But I refuse to accept that everything that's a matter of taste is 100% objective.

Also, remember that I said I don't like Sonic Youth, but I would never call them overrated. You can hate a band, but whether they are overrated or not is based on the quality of songs for their genre, their ability to transcend said genre, and the influence they have had. For their genre, Jawbreaker wrote some of the best songs ever, they broke most, if not all, of the boundaries in that genre with Dear You, if not with their songwriting beforehand, and their influence, whether direct or indirect, on the modern punk scene is incalculable.

and when i say opinion, i mean of those who know Jawbreaker. those who like punk. comparing Husker Du to Britney Spears is irrelevant.

also. the modern punk scene, for the most part, isn't that great. thanking Jawbreaker for that is like thanking Nirvana for bands like Bush and Live.

This is getting pretty ridiculous. Not every old band that a bunch of people love is overrated. The Ramones were not overrated, and neither was Jawbreaker. I love both.

Ok, time for alot of people on here to realize this:

Being overrated has nothing to do with your opinion about weather or not the bands music is good or not.

Jawbreaker might have alot of fans on this little board, but only a minor percentage of rock music fans knows Jawbreaker, which is not fair at all.

And, Jawbreaker, overrated? Their record sales would argue otherwise.

Not to mention I have never read a "best records" or even "history of rock encyclopedia" type book that even mentioned Jawbreaker.

Though, in the_old_scott's defense, how many bands that broke up after an initially poorly received final album would still sell as many copies of a b-sides record 10 years after their breakup as Jawbreaker did.

So, why are you posting this many times under a Jawbreaker thread that you think they're overrated if the above quote is how you truly feel?

Also, whether a band is good or not has nothing to do with how many bands sound like them. But, I digress... When I say 20 Jawbreakers would be awesome. I don't mean 20 identical bands. I mean 20 bands playing that general style that are that freaking good at it. Sorry for the confusion.

I think he was implying you should stop bothering about jawbreaker if you feel they are overrated instead of replying in the post.
I don't think he takes it very well when someone says jawbreaker is overrated. He did the same with me and i also find jawbreaker very cool, but really, when one treats a band like they were gods he's always overrating the band, regardless of which band it is. Then again overrated (everything is)!

Yeah, that's what I meant. It's not how I feel. I think that, if message boards aren't for pointless bickering and hyperbole, then what are they for? I just was asking that, if that's how you felt, why post under a Jawbreaker topic.

And, yeah, I will defend anytime someone says Jawbreaker is overrated. Because being overrated has nothing to do with whether one likes a band or not. Everyone criticizing me seems to base their argument on the fact that they don't think Jawbreaker was very good, while ignoring the fact that I have said there are bands I don't like that I don't think can ever be overrated. Just a few? Sonic Youth, Dead Kennedys, The Doors, and so on and so forth.
And I don't mean to come off as angry at you guys. Don't take any of this personal.
And Jawbreaker aren't gods to me. But I can't think of a single band that has put out an album better than Dear You, and I just can't see how putting out an album that good and influential can be overrated.

that being said, i also never said that i didn't like them. i do like them, i just don't think they're as amazing as other people seem to think they are.

First, Hot Dogs ARE better than Astronauts.

Also, Come On Feel was the best Lemonheads album. Though, arguably, their best song is either "Alison's Starting To Happen" or "The Outdoor Type". Discuss.

Personally, I think Hate Your Friends is their best album.
Thanks in no small part to Ben Deilly. As his influence on the band wore thin (and he eventually left) the band moved from a rock/ pop-punk sound to something a bit more layered and more in line with a lot of the Minneapolis indie/ punk scene at the time (to say nothing of a Richard Butler influence) then further on to more of a Beatles inspired powerpop sound... hence Lick's (as an album in between the two ends of the spectrum) being more in line with Jawbreaker.
Hate Your Friends is really rough around the edges, but as far as punk/pop goes, it's awesome. Strangely, were someone not to know any better, I'd say it could easily be confused as an early Lookout/East Bay release.
"Ever" is one of my favorite songs...well... ever.

That just reminded me.
From First To Last's first press release from Epitaph (when they initially signed) said that they hailed from "the mean streets of Gainesville".
Heh...
1) I'm not sure Gainesville has any mean streets. That town is overly nice.
2) I'm not sure anyone in FFTL has ever SEEN a mean street.
3) They weren't from Gainesville. At the time they had only recently relocated there from Jacksonville or Boca or something. Watch out who you claim Gainesville to.
4) When I wrote them an email calling them out on this and accusing them of never even having played a SHOW in Gainesville (at the time) some twiddletwat in the band told me that they were too big for any of the venues in Gainesville. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH!!!
I may have recounted this before and I may do it again... Tra-la-lah.
I have now turned down doing shows for them here (Pensacola) I believe 4 times. 2 or3 times out of general distaste (and because I didn't think they'd draw)... and the most recent

You don't have to acknowledge the existence of bands you don't care about.

If you're listening to the radio -- stop. Put a mix tape in your car's tape deck. If you're reading Alternative Press -- stop. Find some cooking recipes and have mac n' cheese. If you're browsing Purevolume -- stop. Put on a CD.

See? It's that simple. I've never heard a Hawthorne Heights song... and why would I want to?

Really interesting, shame about the references to Fallout Boy and Blink 182, who as far as i'm concerend have nothing to do with Jawbreaker ("ohh look wer'e Fallout Boy and we appeard on a Jawbreaker tribute comp". Green Day id agree on though, coming from the sameish background.

I'd say that Jawbreaker had a HUGE impact on Blink-182, which in turn impacted most pop-punk, good or awful, after them.

I went to a Blink 182 concert at an arena a few years back, and the part I remember most about the show was when it was over and the arena starting playing music over the loud speaker, Tom from B182 came out with a boombox, grabbed a mic and sat it next to the speaker on the Cd Player and started playing his Bivouac CD instead.

I had gone to that show to see Alkaline Trio and left with an entirely new respect for Blink 182.
