Next Tuesday Rhino Records will release a four CD box set titled Rockin' Bones: `50s Punk & Rockabilly. The box set will be a send up to "the legion of musicians who cranked up the beat, turned up the twang, set the echo to 11 and got real, real gone" collecting 101 rockabilly tracks from 1954 to 1969. Artists as prominent as Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash will be presented alongside more underground favorites like Hazil Adkins. Of course the "punk" label is often not connected with the era, but Rhino seems to be highlighting both acts that inspired the later punk era and held true to that spirit.

I love Rockabilly, I love the stuff Rhino puts out. But they already put out "Loud, Fast, And Out Of Control" a few years back and it's got about 15 of the same songs on it.

Looks like a great set. There's a lot of awesome songs, but it's still missing some crucial cuts. Also, it would have been great if they put some live Jerry Lee Lewis stuff. Some of his live recordings from the late 60s are fast as hell. 3+ Replies

This looks pretty interesting, although I probably won't have enough to buy it. But if anyone has $60 or so to blow, I highly recommend the No Thanks box set Rhino put out a few years ago. It's so fucking good. 1+ Reply

Looks like a really cool comp, though (like any non-current comp) there's a TON of places to get all of those songs, just not in the same package. Some seriously rockin' tunes though, and I like the attempt to connect the raucousness and energy of punk with rockabilly and early rocknroll. Capital-"P" Punk in the 70s totally lifted a ton of riffs, attitude, and fashion from rockabilly & the 50s, so it's not a ridiculous premise. [They're even including the original version of "Brand New Cadillac"!] Hopefully the booklet and other pieces of this box set will be up to the challenge. | Features
