Paul McPike, a 32-year-old grocery store employee in Medford, OR, has sued Green Day, claiming he wrote the lyrics and composed the melodies for the band's highly acclaimed 2004 album, American Idiot.
McPike's filed a copyright infringement complaint in U.S. District Court last week, claiming that he wrote the album in high school during 1992. The only evidence submitted was a copy of the album, stating that the words lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong sings don't exactly match those printed in the liner notes. Since McPike has never performed publicly, he assumes that that a friend must have recorded him singing at home and somehow that recording reached Green Day. You can read the entire story, which includes brief clarification on copyright infringement law, over southern Oregon's Mail Tribune website. Green Day (304 comments)

The story was rather confusing. Unless I read it wrong, I can't tell if he's taking credit for the song, or the whole album. 2+ Replies

hahaha people are so ridiculous. i like how he just does something about it now as if it hasn't been being played non-stop for how long now. I wonder if he realizes how much money he is about to waste. 4+ Replies

And another thing, what kind of jerkoff idiot submits just a copy of the album as evidence and sues over that? If I were the clerk or whoever heard this case first I probably would have soiled myself laughing at this grocery store lifer.

Aside from the apparently obvious fact that Green Day ripped off D4 and Jawbreaker, so if this guy's not lying, apparently those bands ripped him off, there're some more things. First, the line "pulverize the Eiffel towers that criticize your government." Was France's opinion on the first Iraq war, which was occurring in '92 and no doubtedly will be what this guy claims the album is really about, that big of a deal? 3+ Replies

Also, I guess, on top of D4 and Jawbreaker ripping this guy off, POD did too, for his 1992 intro to "Are We The Waiting".

One of the funnier things is that American Idiot rips off so much stuff from the past 15 years that this guy would either have to be the most prophetic songwriter ever, or EVERYONE has been ripping him off for a decade plus if he weren't lying. 2+ Replies

Would the real American Idiot please stand up. I think he's saying that he's suing over the fact that the album is about him. An American Idiot who is 32 and is a grocery store clerk. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

I think Elvis worked with him on this as well, they'd hang out at Burger King after the grocery shift to mull over songs and scarf cheeseburgers.

Well he couldn't have written Jesus of Suburbia because Green Day stole the song's hook from Summer of 69. They just slowed it down, changed the words and threw in some heys.

As much as I hated American Idiot, why is this dufus only filing a lawsuit NOW more than two years after the album's release? Sounds bogus to me...

Well I acted in Bullet In A Bible instead of Billie Joe all the time. And by the way I wrote the entire dookie, the lyrics to 39/smooth which I sold to BJ when he was at the Pinole High School yet, so Green Day exists thanks to me:-) ...and yeah.....I wrote Good Riddance, Minority, Warning (the song, not the album, but I could do that with one arm tied behind my back:-)))), Stuck With Me, Walking Contradiction, Geek Stink Breath and many more...:-) | Features
