The Draft announce digital EP

Post-punk outfit The Draft will be releasing an exclusive self-titled digital EP on March 13th on Epitaph Records. The EP features four tracks, and will be available for purchase through all major download services and as an exclusive packaged album through iTunes. It seems as though the EP may simply be a digital compilation of the two 7" singles No Idea Records will be releasing soon.

It's a brilliant idea. EPs cost the same amount to make as an LP. Saves the band, label, and fans money. It allows bands to release material more frequently. The reason you usually see bands release stuff more than a year between, is due to financial matters, and not lack of material.

err yes, they have to buy the same amount of cd cases and printing materials to make an ep as an lp. I mean it's not like an e/p cd cases is smaller, it only makes sense for it to cost the same amount

EPs take about a third the recording time of an LP, and about a third the mixing time, and usually have less extensive liner notes. therefore, a lot less expensive.

they'd better release this on CD eventually, or i'll be pissed off...

He doesn't mean it costs the same amount to record. He means the physical production/packaging/printing/shipping of the cds costs the same, regardless of the number of minutes of music on each disc.

Because it takes a while to get shit into Itunes and what not. You can't just call them and say, "Hey, the draft have a new CD. Throw it up." they have release schedules and what not. Plus, they need to do some advertising before it comes out.

OOOHHHHHH SHIT!

When I saw these guys with Avail and Pink Razors (amazing show) they fucking played "Stop Wastin' My Time" and I was fucking SOLD on this band for good. I got the album, loved it (it was number 10 in my top ten of the year last year), but when I got it and listened to it...I was thinking "where is that fucking song they played that blew my mind?" For some reason all this time I thought "Out of Tune" was that song but it just didn't translate well while in the studio. I'm glad I'm wrong. I'm buying this for sure.

And yeah, digital EPs do suck.

Saw these guys on Friday night with the Souls. Brilliant night and they are really nice guys haha Chris was rather wasted and I remember Jason said they were trying to get a tour over in the U.K with smoke or fire in July/August woooooooooooo!

I'll be buying this one. I love owning physical copies as much as the next guy, but let's face facts here: the most we'd get are lyrics and maybe a few pictures. I'm just thankful for new music from the Draft. I won't be missing what never existed...

I'm thinking digital EPs are more of a marketing tool than anything. It's an easy way to determine how many "rabid" fans there are out there, willing to go out of their way to pick up a "limited" release. The way iTunes is set-up, it relies heavily on user searches to find new releases, so unless you're U2 or Eminem...Users have to actively seek out new releases.

Sort of like a record store. But with no fear of over-pressing the release, lower overhead costs, etc. And who knows, maybe it'll come with a digital booklet. Better than nothing...

The news story pretty clearly says Itunes has artwork for it.
And it's not a "marketing tool," the way you describe it. Your theory is decent, but advertising on sites like this will just drive fans to it.

Honest answer: I dont mind digital, i use mp3's, ipod etc. but nothing beats buying that cd and the process of exploring it and physically holding it. I just wrote a 9000 word dissertation on the need to own phsycial music packaging in a digital age. There are a LOT of people who feel the same.

I feel exactly the same way (I asked the question). However, I think you're WAY over estimating the amount of people who care about packaging. There've been some studies (in the mainstream public) that showed something like more than 50% of people don't even put CDs back in their cases.

I love having the physical package, I guess I'm just a music geek like that. But I also have ripped my entire library to my iPod, so I appreciate being able to have digital music. My problem with "Digital Only" is the fact that they will probably come with DDR encryption (for exmaple, iTunes does this with all of their purchased files). This limits the number of machines you are allowed to use the file on.

Yes, there are ways to remove it ... but not everyone is computer-saavy (not everyone that purchases digital music is a 15 yr-old Punk fan, for example). Sure, the majority of 'orgers can bypass it, but it's not about our little community exclusively, is it?

Full Disclosure: I was a Metallica basher on that whole subject. Metallica was one of the bands that I grew up on, and I felt that it was a complete slap in the face. Especially

I saw the Draft two nights ago with the Bouncing Souls.

Chris was really drunk, and just kept yelling "YEAH, ALRIGHT!, WOO" into the mic. It was a pretty sloppy set, and disappointing overall. I think about how tight HWM was when I saw them a few years ago, and I have to say I had pretty high expectations for The Draft's live show and felt pretty let down.

On a sidenote, their guitar player doesn't exactly look how I expected him to. A giganitc bald man with a mustache who looked like stone cold steve austin. Oh yeah, and he was wearing a Stone Cold steve Austin shirt. It made me laugh.
