Darryl Jennifer of Bad Brains talks to AllHipHop.com

Not limiting themselves to rock magazines/sites, Bad Brains' bassist Darrly Jennifer recently spoke with AllHipHop.com. The interview centers largely around issues of race, of 'white music' vs. 'black music,' the Brains' relation to hip-hop and the state of punk and rock music in black America. This interview came off as really pompous to me. I hate that he tries to pass off any criticism as racism, though. I mean, damn, they're one of the most beloved hardcore bands ever, and because people don't think this new record is perfect, it's "racism". I hate to sound like a reactionary fuck, but maybe they're being criticized because they're held up to the same standards for musical quality and political correctness as every other band. I mean, if a band with all white members called people "faggots" (a la the Hoods), I'd be just as pissed off.

No. He calls out racism not because people dislike the record, but because he wonders whether white bands who also use terms like "faggot" would get called out like his band has been for the last 20 years. Of course I disagree with Darryl in that bands like that do get called out. It's just that Bad Brains are one of the most beloved, high profile punk bands of all time and that's why it may seem like they get a disproportionate amount of criticism, not because they're black. And Darryl, people do acknowledge what your band has stood for and the positive message it brings. Believe that.

People get on us about the homophobia thing if they hear us say “faggot.” You have to wonder if they would do that same thing to a white band instead of focusing on the message of positivity that we’re trying to bring."

Yeah, entirely. Any other interviews/features I've read on the Bad Brains in the build up to the release of their new album, Jennifers (and all the interviews have been with Jennifers) has seemed very mindful of sounding politically correct in regards to the band's past instances of homophobia, being very careful in choosing his words. Upon first reading this interview it seemed odd (or perhaps only too expected) that in speaking to a black/hip-hop site, that he'd be a little more honest and suddenly play the race card like that.

I really don't think they come off as racist at all in this interview, I actually think they come across as accepting of all people except homosexuals. It is ridiculously stupid to dislike homosexuals but at least they are open to all colors doing whatever they want to do which is different than a large percentage of rappers.
