Billboard talks about Hopeless Records

To celebrate the recent milestone in which the label raised more than $1,000,000 for charity, Billboard has put together a detailed article about Hopeless Records and its founder, Louis Posen. The label formed in 1993 to release a records from 88 Fingers Louie and Guttermouth but has gone on to form a successful charity arm (Subcity Records) and a series of high profile tours (Take Action!).

All this happened as founder Louis Posen was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a rare disease in which the retina of the eye progressively degenerates resulting in eventual blindness

I'm pretty sure Hopeless Record's first release was a Guttermouth 7" that featured a song titled "Hopeless", hence the name.

Blind? That wouldn't explain the poor music they've been putting out lately...Odd.

Seriously, musical tastes aside Hopeless is a pretty awesome label, not to mention Subcity. Any label that Mike Park supports has got my backing. I think any musical taste issues I have with the label are secondary when you look at the interests they have at heart.

Common Rider, Fifteen, and the Queers were their high points. Stoked that the charity has made money. I always thought Good Riddance would put out an album on Sub City, what, with thier philanthopy work, and all...I guessed wrong.

Can't say I'm a fan of any of their current roster but I have to hand it to them - a million dollars is a hell of a lot of money for a small indie label to raise. Good work.

This is a really stand-up guy and label.

When I was a 15 year old living in rural America, I would send away for cds and tshirts from Hopeless via mail order and would write notes in with my orders. They would always write cool notes back. Just really nice people.

"Out of that thought, Hopeless sister label Sub City was born. Its name is a play on words incorporating its mission statement of subsidizing nonprofit organizations along with a nod to the underground scene that spawned its artists."

I actually had never even put that (Sub City=subsidy) together until I read the above paragraph. Hi, I like to miss boats.

Wasn't Schlong the second release from Hopeless. 88 Fingers Louie was number 7 I think.
