In what seems to be an out-and-out joke, the UK-based Performing Rights Society has accused a British car repair chain named Kwik-Fit of copyright infringement because mechanics were regularly found to play their radios loud enough for others to overhear the music.
According to their claim, music, protected by copyright, could be heard by colleagues and customers. They claim that this represents a "performance" of the music in public and renders the firm guilty of infringing copyright. The group is demanding £200,000 ($407,000 USD) in damages. I would have liked to have been in the meeting where they thought about this.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAHAHAHA.HAHAHAHAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA HA. I'm gonna kill myelf. There is no hope anymore. Music will actually be illegal soon. They are just going to sue anyone that actually listens to music, and that will pay all the royalties.

Hey, if this means that we can sue all the retards that listen to loud music on their car stereos as they ride down the street, I'm all for it. 1+ Reply

Recorded music should be outlawed altogether. That would solve everything!

Does that mean that every kid that plays their car stereo so loud the entire neighborhood can hear is guilty of the same copyright infringement? For the sake of my neighborhood, I hope so. I'll start collecting license plate numbers tomorrow.

This is hilarious. Like when they sued guitar stores for customers playing songs on guitars. 2+ Replies

As ridiculous as it is they may actually get fucking money out of it. To play music at a level that is audible by customers you typically have to pay a fee of some sort. Hence why you purchase Muzak. Now, if they were playing a radio station they might be able to say the station pays copyright holders and therefore it's the stations burden to bare but if it was CD's there may actually be some payout.
This is fucking crazy.
