Circle Takes The Square has posted the live version of a new song titled "Ritual of Names" online. You can check it out, in two parts, on MySpace.

The band hasn't released new material since 2004's As The Roots Undo.

I met one of these guys as I was in line for their set at the fest (which I never got to see - FUCK common grounds) , and he was probably the nicest band member I've ever met. Nothing but respect for this band.

where exactly does the phrase "circle takes the square" come from?

i've been wondering this for quite some time now. i know it's not just a band name, i've heard it mentioned numerous other times, and the context always seems to be "and circle takes the square," as in, "my comment just one-upped your comment and i win." is this what it means? where is this from???

I always thought it was derived from the mathematical term "squaring the circle" which is used as a metaphor for an impossible act.

Changing it to "Circle Takes the Square" the band name denotes the completion of a seemingly impossible action.

I think its from Hollywood Squares, although if they were called Circle Squared you'd obviously be write. And mathematically its easy to square a circle, its just that you can't represent it graphically wihtout alot of innovation to the point where you have something more akin to a metaphor than a visual representation

Actually, the term squaring the circle was derived from a problem wherein the solver needed to draw a square with the same area as a given circle in a finite number of steps with only a ruler and compass. It was proven to be impossible somewhere in the 1800s when it was proven that pi is a transcendental. The only thing you can do is draw it to within a given error. And the phrase 'circle takes the square' is from Hollywood Squares, but the band has said that that's not the real meaning behind why they took the name. Although I've never seen anywhere that's had what they really mean...

I think if you allow an infinite number of steps its possible to draw it though, right?

its been a while but if I remember, you need to be able to produce sqrt(pi) which is impossible if Pi is not algrbtaic (which, being transcendental, it isn't)

I would assume this is correct. Somehow, ctts doesn't strike me as a Hollywood Squares type band.
