Jawbreaker unveils more reissue information

Adam Pfahler, former drummer of east bay punk band, Jawbreaker has sent another MySpace update on the upcoming reissue of their 1990 album Unfun. The album has been remastered and will be available on vinyl, CD and MP3

Hey,

I just got back from LA, where I remastered Jawbreaker's first full length Unfun lp with the great John Golden. With a 24 bit transfer at a higher sampling rate, the new version sounds great and is closer to the original analog tapes than when we first went to cd way back in 1991. I am still assembling it, and plan on releasing it on iTunes/Rhapsody, etc. (it's never been available online) in a few months, as well as on vinyl and regular old cd on Blackball Records (blackballrecords.com).

I heard from Shredder Records that there's been some speculation as to why we took the record back. To set the record straight, there is no beef between us and Shredder. Mel was one of the first to champion the band and we remain friends. As anyone in a band will tell you, it's always smart to own your own masters, and we now have our complete catalog and will be releasing everything on Blackball Records, including Bivouac and 24 Hour Revenge Therapy eventually. I don't have to tell you that our relationship with Gary at Tupelo/Communion is solid as well, as we continue to use his Revolver Distribution as our exclusive. There. Now, all of this begs the question: will we remaster everything, and if so, will there be bonus tracks? Yes and very likely.

A lot of people don't seem to like Live from Camp X-Ray for some reason, but personally I think it's one of their best. Every time I hear "I'm Not Invisible" I still go apeshit. The first album of theirs I had was Scream, Dracula, Scream!, the second was RFTC. Speedo's younger brother Dean was in my high school class and would bring in lots of Rocket stuff to turn us on to the band. In fact the photos in RFTC were taken at my school and feature many of my classmates. Unfortunately my tastes were more of the pop-punk/ska variety back in '97/'98 and it would be several years before I really "turned on" to Rocket.

Why don't you start off with the R.I.P. CD/DVD coming out Feb 26 on Vagrant (see all the banner ads on this page)? I was at that show and I can tell you it features most of their best songs and the performance was absolutely killer. It'll give you a

ok, that is just plain awesome.

Anyway, it's not that I don't like Camp X-Ray, I do, it's just not really as representative of the band as the other releases. Also, some numbers like "I Wanna Know" are a bit flat, though still good rock n roll. I think the lyrics are great and "Too Many Balls" is just about the best closer song ever. There is no way I can put it above the four albums that came before it though.

It'll be alternate mixes of songs that have already been released. The Busy 7" has an alternate mix, as does Side A of Unfun (from what I understand).

yea...thats true...but is the same with the special-editions of the old star wars trilogy...maybe george lucas wanted it to look that way, still I like the original version better...

i duno.. i got those dvds and the edits are pretty seamless so i love both versions, hopefully it can be the same with these remasters

Comparing this to Star Wars is a pretty weak counter-argument. Star Wars ADDED shit and CHANGED the original versions.

All Jawbreaker is doing is making it so the album sounds like the original analog tapes. Nothing is being re-recorded, none of the lyrics are being changed, and it’s just going to sound like what it should have sounded like way back then if the technology for CD's was where it is today.

Unfun remastered is okay and all, but I can't wait for Bivouac remastered. That album sounds horrible for how good those songs are. I can't wait to hear a better studio version of "Chesterfield King".

Though, I can't imagine 24 Hour sounding better than it does.

I had been listening to Bivouac on cd and my computer for years, and then when I finally got it on vinyl I was blown away.

That part where the drums break through and Blake screams "Bivouac!" is so much more powerful on vinyl for some reason. It just sounds 100x better.

I'm glad a lot of older punk bands have enough resources to go back and make their records sound better. And by better I don't mean "more radio friendly", I mean a better, fuller, more powerful recording.

I love Jawbreaker. Lyrically, one of the most important bands of the 90's.

By 'Live' do you mean a reissue on vinyl? Fuck that, when we won that record we were told that was it, count yourself lucky that you have it on cd.

petty insults aren't doing you any favours. Usually a limited edition is exactly what it is, you have the limited edition Allied Records version. It's never getting reissued again, however if blackball records reissue it, then it is not a limited edition so you don't lose out. So i'm guessing you had a bad day huh? nevermind

While I'm pretty militant that 24 hour sounds perfect as is, I think bivouac could benefit from a remaster.

What I would love to see if Bivouac gets reissued is if they re-sequenced it so the album played straight (as it is on the vinyl) and they put all the bonus shit they added to the cd tracklisting on the end so I don't have to have the album interrupted by them.

Once I learned the CD tracklisting was spotted with all these other songs from the same session (or abouts) that weren't necessarily the proper LP, I understood why my favorite songs were so over the place, THEY WERE EXACTLY THE LP TRACKLISTING!

It's not like they were 'bad' songs, but the actual lp of bivouac proper is tight and damn consistent. It breaks up the flow for the extra songs to be thrown on there.

I totally agree, before I noticed that no one carried the vinyl I was determined to get the LP instead just to get rid of the bonus songs.
