Media: The Hold Steady: "Sequestered in Memphis"

The Hold Steady have posted the first single from their new album. The record is titled Stay Positive and is due out July 15, 2008. It is the follow-up to Boys and Girls in America which was released in 2006.

been looking forward to this.

after one listen, its kind of a bit disappointing. they finally started to write songs on the last record, i just hope they continue that tradition.

i'm sure it'll be better after a few more listens.

I like it. It's not life changing, but I like it.

Plus, it's impossible to top Stuck Between Stations. Any time I think of this band I automatically think of the opening of that song. Pure class.

I wanted them to beat New Orleans, but that's just because I absolutely hate the Hornets. But now that that is out of the way, they are certainly the team of the four remaining that I least want to win (though I can't say I am really rooting for the Lakers either).

As much as I like this band, having seen them live makes me feel like their recordings have never really done them justice. The stage dynamic is just a really important aspect of the experience to me.

In other news, I just got back from Cursive here in Omaha. they just played their entire new record from start to finish and I must say that if you were a fan of the Ugly Organ and felt a little disappointed in Happy Hollow, you are in for a pretty big treat. They are headed into the studio tomorrow and I think they played about 13 or 14 songs. It was pretty epic.

This song is also supposed to be available on iTunes starting tomorrow (Tuesday), according to the Vagrant site. Just thought I'd throw that in there since they didn't mention it in the post. That'll hold me over 'til the album comes out. I listened to Boys & Girls in America again today for about the 100th time since it came out and it still sounds just as fresh as the first listen. I don't know how I wasn't aware of this band before that album, but I've seen them live once (and will again next week) and I'm sorry I hadn't learned of them earlier.

I saw all the top marks for "Boys and Girls in America" on this site two years ago. I listened to it for a month or two and I had no idea what the fuck all the hype was. It was just bar music. The song writing wasn't even that great, let alone the music. But over the course of the next 12 months, I would find myself humming bits of songs that I couldn't quite pinpoint. It would kills me that I couldn't recognize the songs stuck in my head. Then I re-stumbled upon the album on my iTunes a realized the source of the phantom melodies. I now eagerly await "Stay Positive", especially after listening to some of the new songs on the NPR stream. Any band that name-drops 7 Seconds is fucking awesome in my book...

these guys have been around for like 4 or 5 years.

they've been uber hyped since then, but nobody really paid attention until their last record.

their live show is 1000 better than their records. that's about it.

Awesome! I love everything about this band. Just great.

I've been working backwards since I listened to the last album about 30 times in the first 15 days I had it. Every album is great in its own way. I think Separation Sunday has grown to be my favorite though, some of the best lyrics I've ever read on that album.

Boys and Girls in America is the best place to start - it's slicker, but it's also the most accesible. Baseball has the right idea - work your way backwards.

They're like a mash-up of the Replacements and Thin Lizzy and every good and bad time you've ever had drunk or high.

"Stuck Between Stations" was a single last year and for damn good reason. Also try "Killer Parties," "Multitude of Casualties," "Knuckles," and "How a Resurrection Really Feels."

The part where Craig's all "they were trying for a vision quest/they opened up three buttons/and all they saw was desert trash" and then the guitar kicks in gives me goosebumps every single time.

You can't really go wrong with Boys and Girls in America as a start. "Chillout Tent" is one of my favorite Hold Steady songs. "Citrus" is also a kickass acoustic track.

I concur with the working backwards. Boys and Girls in America is a great entry point, but all three of their albums are absolutely fantastic. "How a Resurrection Really Feels" is far and away the best closing track I have ever heard on any album. I still get goosebumps every time I hear it.
