Jimmy Eat World to begin recording

Though their last album was released late last fall, Jimmy Eat World is apparently beginning work on the follow up to Chase This Light. The band discussed their plans in a new interview:

We're kind of feeling like we have a lot of ideas brewed up and we're going to get cracking on some new music. Actually we have our own home studio that we recorded 'Chase this Light' in. So it's really convenient, So far, we're having the attitude of just doing it. And not having the attitude of trying to do anything, and just 'Let It Happen'. With our other records, sometimes Jim will have a lyric melody or a guitar melody and we'll build from that. Sometimes we just sit around and make noise and go from there.

"We're trying our best to break that and cut the time [between albums] down – and at least cut a year off of that. That's our goal. We want to be able to have stuff out there sooner.

According to the interview, the band is also considering self-releasing a future album. After their next album, they will be free of their current contract with their label.

i agree. i think its starts really well with big casino, brilliant song, but its all downhill from there (always be is terrible) imho.

I think every band with a "built in" fan base is going to start self-releasing their albums, and I welcome that.

I'd like to see what self-releasing an album would do for their sound. Once I let go of the notion that they were never going to be that same late-90's emo band playing with the Get Up Kids in some random basement, I embraced "Chase This Light" as the poppiest pop album they ever put out and was really satisfied even though it screamed of over-production. Actually, I'm still kind of disappointed it never got much radioplay on the pop stations. I'd rather they get the attention that The Frey or Maroon 5 get. Whatever they do, I'm sure I'll like it and be sure to check them out live again. Their best shows are the ones where they hand-pick the openers themselves, because they stick true to their roots.

S/T, Clarity and Bleed American and even Chase This Light were all good records but to me their best record is Static Prevails because it is the only one that has a real connection to the indie-emo/post-hardcore sound.

100% agree. It's a bit aggrivating at times, because one thing I notice about Jim and the band's tastes is that it's (what I personally consider) very good and mature. They put an interesting spin on a Prodigy song, cover Low, Teenage Fanclub, Guided by Voices, namedrop Heatmiser in a song, etc. -- but they haven't yet been able to reach that same level of kinda "snobby" critical acclaim those bands get with the sound they put out these days. I'd just like to see them rise to the occasion, that's all.

And perhaps it was just me but Warren seemed stoked to meet The Rock

Yeah, that was one of the better late night performances by a punk band. Sometimes they just come across weird on TV.

good, because when I heard Chase This Light, my thoughts were "great, now i have to have to wait 3 years until JEW can redeem themselves."

Aside from a couple songs like that shitty blues song, I thought Chase This Light was their best work. The upbeat songs weren't quite as good as Bleed American, but the soft songs were pretty well done.

I loved Chase This Light. Some songs sucked but for the most part it is catchy as hell.

Futures is probably my least favorite release but still has some great songs. Clarity has my heart

Those are my tiers...I go back and forth on which of the top three is my favorite, even though "Futures" doesn't sound like the other two. I'm sure they'll never record another album in the vein of "Clarity" or "Static Prevails," but another one that hits closer to "Futures" would make me happy. I never understood the hatred of "Futures," since it felt like a great bounceback from the underwhelming "Bleed American"...but I definitely understand the disappointment over "Chase This Light." I've given it chance after chance, but I just can't get into it - almost all of the songs leave me feeling like they SHOULD have been better. It's sort of like the new Offspring album - it's not terrible, but you spend each song thinking

these guys are so bad. Their songs are so middle of the road and their bass and drum parts are so static they could have been played by a machine.

They were super-boring when I saw them live last week. Maybe cos it was outdoors, maybe it was because they just suck live. I love them on CD.
