Gaslight Anthem pre-order crashes SideOneDummy

Apparently, demand for the Gaslight Anthem's upcoming album, The '59 Sound is so great that the volume of pre-orders crashed SideOneDummy's official website yesterday. To help spread some of the damage around, the label has enlisted Vinyl Collective to handle sales of the "blue" color of the vinyl.

That will go on sale here at 3pm EST/12pm PST today.

also, i didn't think these guys were that big and i suspect it's mainly people looking for the exclusive / limited releases to flip on ebay. i think it'd be a good thing to limit orders to 1 or 2 copies per to prevent kids from hording triples just to sell later on for outrageous prices.

I tend to agree with Toby from Red Scare that vinyl is rad, but this multi-color shit is making shit bad. I hate that genuine music lovers are screwed over on limited runs because someone wants to make a quick buck on ebay.

There were a ton of kids who tried but didn't get to order this yesterday because the S1D site froze up and the currently have no idea when, where or if they'll be able to procure a copy. Posting this is informing a ton of kids who may have been discouraged (or outright gave up), where they'll be able to get an the album if they don't religously check S1D or VC.

As for the people buying a ton...Yeah that's true. That's why Gaslight specifically is doing a one time color pressing for the blue and whit colors and all other pressing will be on black. The band is specifically trying to avoid a million variants that kids pay $400 for.

Yes but they have a ton of fans (obviously) who are interested in colored pressings so they'd be screwing themselves twice. First, they'd be pissing off their fans, second they'd be wasting an opportunity to move 1,500 units in a day. Not saying they're money hungry but with how poorly CD's are moving and how many people already downloaded this album (see 99% of this site) I'd say you'd be a fool to piss away any guaranteed sales.

As for people getting more fucked because there's only 1,500, there's honestly no way the band could know the response. Their ep had 500 colored versions and that took at least a week to sell out. The last colored repressing of Sink or Swim sold out in a couple of weeks. I really don't think they were anticipating a sell out of less than a day.

First, I don't think they are playing anything up, but that's just my opinion. Second, the term "blue collar" is so vague that you will use it to point out any supposed hypocrisies. "Aw, you didn't buy all you clothes from Wal-Mart and you don't watch NASCAR, you elitists."

Cheap gimmick? I'll be sure to phone that one into No Idea, Asian Man Records, Bridge Nine, Fat Wreck Chords, Victory Records, Rivalry Records, Jade Tree, Kiss of Death, Dischord and pretty much any other label that does limited color pressings that sell out.

I don't know why you act as if Gaslight Anthem is the first (or only) band to do this. Many bands with large fanbases have done the exact same thing. I fail to see how this is any different than every single other colored vinyl pressing ever. As I mentioned the band has never (ever) had this kind of a response to a pre-sale and could not have anticipated this sort of sale. So to say it's a "cheap gimmick" pretty much includes every punk label ever.

It's kinda funny to me how people are all apeshit over having the latest cool vinyl colors and splatters. I don't know about most people, but I play my records - I don't stare at them and ooh and awe over the pretty colors. I don't give a shit what color my records are.

I understand what you're saying, but color does matter to an extent to me. I listen to all my records too, but I'm also buying vinyl because of the complete artistic package. If I think a certain color accentuates that album art/package better than another then yeah, I'm going to target that color.

Punknews does presale stories all the time. This one is a little different because of the server problems. The server problems indicate that the band is popular so a story about a popular punk band would be appropriate for this site.

If let's say Story of the Year presales' crashed Epitaph's webstore, it wouldn't have been a story. Most people would try to keep it quiet and fix it. Instead, this is being flipped into a hype generating story. "So many people are anxious for this, it crashed the server!!" As opposed to "we have a shitty server."

I know it isn't right to reguarly use the word "fag" or refer to something as "gay" but I think it's funny cause me and my friends use those words reguarly in the context of something or someone being lame, and NEVER as a homosexual reference. Then here, whenever anybody uses it they are instantly "homophobic assholes." And living in LA, I have a good amount of gay/lesbian friends, who don't seem to mind the word's usage at all so long as it isn't used as a homosexual insult.

Kinda like the N word (even punknews won't allow me to type the actual word) or "nigga", so long as I'm not calling a black person that as an insult, emphesis on "as a insult", it really isn't that big of a deal, even to them.

People are just too sensetive, but thats just my opinion, I know that it is political wrong, but I guess it's just where I grew up that makes it

Paint It Black is my favorite band going right now and Dan Yemin is an all time great in the world of punk. I respect him very much. But, I remember reading an interview with him on this site where he said he abhored the use of the word "fag". Yet, in the same interview, he described something as "retarded".

I don't find this to be in bad taste at all, but if he is going to get all wound up when people say "fag" in any context, then it seems hypocritical that he can describe something that can be considered offensive to uptight retards. Redundant, I know.

I love how a number of different albums have been announced for sale and preorder but when Punknews mentions that the sale of this album has been moved entirely off the record labels website and on to vinyl collective because of server issues, it's "Fueling the hype machine".

If loading HTML preorder pages is causing serious server issues, Side One Dummy needs to update their infrastructure, 'cause that's pretty sad. It would take a lot more than a couple thousand vinyl geeks loading low-load webpages to bring down even the most basic of web servers with by today's standards a very small amount of RAM.

Maybe by 'crashed... website' they meant that there were so many simultaneous connections that the server couldn't deliver fast enough and caused connections to time out, but that would go away after a couple minutes given that you don't have a Nine Inch Nails-esque influx of new visitors.

I wonder how much they'd pay me to refactor their infrastructure...

Well the thing is conebone, that when a typical story is posted about a band that is not very popular, the only posters are usually those who like the band or have seen them live. Gaslight started getting popular, going on tour with AM! and whatnot and their stories started getting more and more posts. Then comes the hype and "circle-jerking". Eventually the circle-jerking got so intense, people such as myself decide to check the band out. The more people that check the band out, the more people that will like or dislike the band. Those posting that they do not like the band now are certainly not those posting that they liked them before, its the newcomers who hear so many good things, but do not agree. God that was long.

I agree. I think all physical formats are dying. But until then, I can still:

a) Upload my CDs easily to my computer as digital files
b) Easily buy a CD-player cheap and play my CD's
c) Find a car to play all my music in, even without some iPod connector

Vinyl is big, clunky, and out-dated, regardless of the mild "sound difference" you may hear between the two.

Maybe, but if you are into it for the 'art', then CD's look like shit, you can't see it. For example. Pick up '24 Hour Revenge Therapy' and take a good look at the images. On vinyl is instantly recongnizable as Looney Tunes, I wouldn't even notice on cd.

Being a fellow music nerd (and face it, that it what we are, I mean we spend hours of every day on a fucking blog site) I am totally in it for the art aspect of it. Which is why I always buy instead of download, illegally or legally, cause I feel that I'm buying the whole package: disc, liner notes, artwork, etc...

But I just can't justify buying a record over a cd. I mean, records look cool to have, sure. But with a cd I can put it into my computer as backup that something should happen and damage the disc, I can listen to it while driving, I can input it into my iPod, and I have a way better selection of stereo's to play it on.

Sure you could always buy the record, the download the mp3, but that just doesn't make much sense, at least not to me personally.

I like vinyl alright, but I prefer to have a CD version as some kind of back-up, since I've gotten one iPod stolen this year and my old one died last year, with maybe 1/3 of the songs not on my computer. Plus I have a frickin' ton of CDs from over the years and I don't feel like buying them in vinyl all over again, which is what I fear will happen if I go deep into the collector mindset.

Also, my record player sucks ass. My CD player, on the other hand, is real nice and I kind of like the sound better, even though it's digital.

All you need is a USB turntable. Then you can put vinyl on your computer, I have one and it's awesome. I can then burn CD's for my car (I've actually stopped driving for the most part though, Skatin and Biking is the way to go). Once you start getting into vinyl you never go back. Shit is so much cooler than CD's.

I'm not into the vinyl thing either. I appreciate it and respect those who collect, I just never got into it. It kinda makes me feel like a freak on this site, but I guess I'm not the only one. I had a record player when I was in high school that no longer works and I still have one King Crimson and a Jethro Tull album on vinyl (yeah, I also like prog rock, so what), but that's about it.

So, my dumbass accidently ordered 2 copies of the LaGrecia album and I don't really wanna pay for shipping and go through the trouble to return one of the copies. So usually around how much could I get if I sell it to a used record store? I'm hoping for like at least 5 bucks or something. And if you live in LA which one usually pays the most for them? I normally go to Second Spin in Santa Monica to get my cd's.

Sadly, I'm the only one in my pack of friends that likes "orgcore" punk. My few punk friends like 77 punk, 80's hardcore punk, and 90's Epitaph style punk. I'm the only one that hasn't giving up on the genre in terms of this decade. So unless I'm gonna trade for a Strokes or NIN (which is free) I'm fucked.

LOL @ the immense amount of people posting "Oh, I have to be cool and say I don't like a band I think is overrated a million times over so I don't jump on the supposed bandwagon of people liking them". When in reality, you're jumping on your own bandwagon because you think it's cool to express how much you hate a band that's popular.

I think Against Me! is overrated as hell and I never liked them, but I don't go into every AM! story posted on this site and state it time and time again.

Get over yourselves. A bunch of people posting repeatedly about how much they dislike a band and don't "deserve the hype" isn't going to change anything.

I don't get all the instant boners regarding this band. Let's face it, the music isn't anything mindblowing...it's completely average.

Also, fuck anyone who buys two or three copies of the same record on different colors of vinyl. You're obviously buying it for some sort of lame credibility.

This is a great album, and I'm stoked to have it on vinyl.
I don't really understand the whole buying vinyl for collective purposes, I mean yeah, I think colored vinyl is really cool, but it's not worth buying 38 versions of one record so you can have all the colors (dude from the Against Me! vinyl file, I'm talking to you).

I must say, I very much enjoyed SOS and Senor and the Queen, but I have been thoroughly underwhelmed with this album. Maybe them quoting Counting Crows just bugs me, but it seems like there's a lot less energy in this album...oh well, hopefully it will grow on me.

Same here. I saw them on a co-headlining tour with Murder by Death and even though it was MBD's hometown and they were headlining that night, they played for so long. It was sick, though. Really solid set.
