Tours: The Phenomenauts plan "Large Hadron Collider" tour

The Phenomenauts have announced the "Large Hadron Collider" tour which will also feature members of the Epoxies, The Slackers, Groovie Ghoulies and the River City Rebels. NASA's favourite new/wave punk band are headlining the tour to celebrate the upcoming launch of the Large Hadron Collider, a massive collider which aims to discover the origins of matter, including the elusive Higgs Boson as well as establish the nature of "dark matter." The collider could find evidence of extra dimensions, a boon for super-string theory, which holds that quarks, the particles that make up atoms, are infinitesimal vibrating strings.

why has the world suddenly gotten interested in particle colliders? Ok, the cocept of smashing things up at unbelievably high speeds is inherently cool, but the fact that the results are completely incomprehensible takes a little bit of the wow factor away for me...

The results aren't completely incomprehensible, just almost incomprehensible, thats why it takes a team of like 7000 scientists and engineers to make any sense of it. But the possibilities that come from understanding the results are too great to not take an interest in the colliders. We have one up here under campus and the information that can be learned from them is just amazing.

i'm not disputing this at all; i'm just wondering why this particular aspect of science is the one getting a lot of publicity at the moment.

I completely agree that there are a lot of incredibly important and interesting things happening at the minute, it's just that we don't have seem to have a "systems biology: gene-centric view of evolution under threat tour" for some reason...

Well the fact that this collider is brand new makes it noteworthy. The collider is also surrounded by controversy, some people think that once it starts up it could literally create a black hole. Even though there is literally no evidence to support this at all, people still don't want to see it turned on. These are the same retards that spray painted " 'Nanotech scares me' - Earth" all over campus.

But I do agree that more attention should be paid to things like genetics and energy conversion and storage. That way we can make our own food and not have to worry about things like, say, the environment.

When half of the US assumes that the world is the way it is because of God's master plan, and that we shouldn't even try to learn about our universe because it is too incomprehensibly complicated, I applaud interest in scientific research almost regardless of its nature.

These guys make me think of Man...or Astroman? Even though they aren't anything alike. One of the funniest things I think MOAM ever did was to go on tour as 3 separate bands across the country and just called it 'the clone tour'. It's hilarous although I would have been pissed if I had gotten the all girl version of them instead of the real deal.

yes! The clones were awesome. I remember they did an interview with MTV2 (i think) and halfway through they told the interviewer they were clones, and the real MoAM? was in Canada right now. Awkward rest of interview, haha.

I did an interview with them back in 96, it was amazing to have them sit there and never break character no matter how ridiculous the shit coming out of their mouths was.

I got lucky with the clone tour, the originals came to us, lthough having seen them so many times it would have been kind of cool in hindsight to have the clones. That's great about the mtv interview, I didn't know that.

ha. i would have loved to have seen one of the clone bands. especially the girl one.

and that mtv interview sounds amazing. more bands need to do that kind of thing. reminds me of dishwasher pete on david letterman.

servotron was awesome. i saw them in germany, where the crowd didn't really get them. there were a few 'merkins in the crowd, so we heckled the crap out of them. "don't robots rust when they drink water? shouldn't you be drinking oil?"

after the show, i went to get my records signed, and they wouldn't sign them, since the band was actually a bunch of robots, but they did have a rubber stamp to "sign" them with. awesome.

I had to drive to stupid Myrtle Beach to see Servotron, they were fucking great. There were 2 people in the crowd making out and they kept putting spotlights on them and asking why they chose there to make out instead of their biology class. Bravo to them for the rubber stamp, that's thinking ahead.

So much fun. I didn't know Pete was on Letterman, I totally missed that.

he wasn't. he got a friend to go in his place. i can't remember the details, but they kinda messed it up and pissed off letterman. it's in his book, which you should read, if you haven't. it's some stuff from the old zines, as well as some stuff that never made it in, and some stories about making the zine and filling subscriptions and maintaining penpalships across the globe...an interesting proposition, considering he was always travelling around and moving and being homeless.
